Dr. Mark
Greene was the heart and soul of ER for a longtime and to
many patients that knew him and who loved him had the privilege
of being able to understand how he saved everybody else’s
lives. In a way, Dr. Greene was not just an asset to County
General; he was also an overworking doctor who hardly ever
spends enough time with his daughter, Rachel. A few doctors
would be just like him if somebody could match his ability. He
came to County General Hospital on September 19, 1994, and it
all began on the 2 hr. Pilot Episode: 24 Hours ((A.K.A. The
Longest Day)), where he was falling a sleep before Nurse
Lydia Crawford had informed that a drunken Dr. Douglas Ross
needed to be evaluated before checking patients before working
on children. She woke him up and took care of him, also in the
pilot episode he was looking forward to working into private
practice, but he decided to stay at County General and became
one of the most beloved doctors/teachers as the years went on.
Midway, throughout the show, Dr. Peter Benton’s 3rd
yr. Medical Student, John Carter, came to County General for a
quick tour. According to the storyline, he was an young,
inexperienced medical student who came from a wealthy family,
also what he took at Northwestern University was,
Dermatology/Psychiatry. Those were 2 subjects that John had
studied when he was in college, also he was performing Novocain
on a woman. Also in the pilot, after taking care of many
patients for the 1st time, he went outside ill, and
needed fresh air, and what Mark had said to John was. “Don’t
ever say you’re sorry, you see, there are 2 kinds of
doctors…there are the kind that gets rid of their feeling and
the kind that keep ‘em. If you’re going to keep your feelings
than you’re going to get sick from time to time, that’ how it
works. A lot of people come here, and they’re bleeding, they’re
dying, and they’re sick, and that’s why they need our help, and
helping is what we feel.”
After taking
care of his wife and only child on St. Patrick’s Day (March 17th),
he also took care of Dr. Douglas Ross’s soon-to-be girlfriend,
Carol Hathaway, R.N., Head Nurse of the ER after she was
brought in a suicide attempt by overdosing on barbiturates, and
everybody in the hospital knew what was going on with her and
her health was declining, and 8 wks. later, after the premiere
episode of: Day 1, she’s finally recovered as she went
back to work. One year after the recovery of the beloved Nurse
Carol Hathaway, became Dr. Greene’s 1st problem in
that very 1st season finale when he would thought
that: Everything Old Is New Again, but his 1st
problem wasn’t really that new when Dr. Swift had offered him
the Attending Position and told Greene that Jodi O’Brien’s
husband is suing for malpractice. He must’ve told him that he
needed to talk to Jen about it and had thanked him afterwards.
When the malpractice suit was over, The Greenes looked after Dr.
Susan Lewis, another best friend of Mark’s, in a brides maid at
Carol Hathaway’s wedding. When Hathaway tried her best to find
Tag, he was sitting on a bench outside, and had told her if he
loved her, then she would loved him. She accepted and the
wedding had been cancelled, however, Dr. Ross showed up at the
church and spoke with Nurse Hathaway about her possibilities of
being happy these days. After the hospital opened for business
on the 1st season of the series, the 2nd
season of ER, created a furious action and a new
directional turning point as Mark hired the annoying, yet
persistent Dr. Kerry Weaver on an episode of: Welcome Back,
Carter. What we found out from her was that she had a limp
on her left arm allowing her to use the cane every time she has
trouble moving it. On the most-watched episode of: Hell And
Hot Water, Dr. Ross attended a job interview at a pediatric
doctor’s office, he’s surrounded by little kids, and at the same
time, his best friend had tended to an elderly woman who had
been smoking marijuana for her eye problem.
After Dr. Ross
had accepted the job, he arrived on his shift at the ER
and is satisfied about his new 90 grand a year job. Carol would
better understand that he was very furious, and didn’t want to
discuss that with her. At the same time, desk clerk, Jerry
Markovic gave Dr. Ross a marijuana cigarette that he got from
the old lady that Dr. Greene was working on beforehand. When
Doug was driving in the rain, and was getting soaking wet, his
suggestion to Joey was calling 911 on Ben who was caught up in a
trapped door to where he was yelling, crying and wailing for
help. He was so cold and Ross was worried about him getting
hypothermia. What he said to Ben was that he had to go and seek
help, however, Ben continued sing the song, “Take Me Out To
The Ballgame,” as Dr. Greene’s best friend had walked away.
While Dr. Ross was performing a C.P.R. on a boy before the
police arrived in the flood, Dr. Greene played “Doom,” or at
least he was trying to. Meanwhile, while Dr. Ross was
struggling to get the boy to County General, everybody & Mark
was watching it on National Television, and soon after that,
Mark was preparing the staff for their arrival. As everyone
might’ve noticed, Doug had the reporter turn off the camera and
needed him to help with chest compressions. Doug’s best friend
had reminded him that he couldn’t come in, having everything
under control. But, Nurse Hathaway and Dr. Greene met Dr. Ross
on the roof when the helicopter arrived. And finally, all that
was about to change after Carter was watching the news and had
told Molly’s parents about the news, also, he told the reporters
to turn their cameras off and leave. Ben’s parents wanted to
thank Dr. Ross and he reminded Ben about their date to go to
Wrigley Field.
At the same
time, he thank Dr. Greene as he already stitched him up, and
that Greene had escorted his best friend as the flashes of the
cameras/lights were going off. During that same season leaves a
lot of problems between Mark and his family, his ex-wife,
Jennifer Greene (now Simon) had moved out to Milwaukee
because---what we learned in the ep. 179: On The Beach---was
that she married a jerk, and was a workaholic, and her
ex-husband had served him with divorce papers prior to working
long hours. After that scaring divorce, he stood in Chicago to
serve him with custody papers of a young daughter, Rachel; in
several episodes; but things got a little tight in: Take
These Broken Wings, after Mark had hired Dr. Weaver for over
a year and to where she suggested she supported Dr. Susan Lewis
as: Chief Resident if Greene should help Weaver became an ER
attending physician. But Dr. Mark Greene had decided that Kerry
would be qualified as the new attending if she would’ve back
Susan Lewis off as: Chief Resident. However, nobody was very
happy to hear about the news they received in the nerve-wrecking
season finale of: John Carter, M.D. In the 3rd
season of the series, after Dr. Kerry Weaver had took on the
role of a new attending physician, John Truman Carter III,
finally became a doctor for the 1st time in: Dr.
Carter, I Presume. According to the storyline---On July 4th,
when ex-3rd yr. Medical Student, Dr. John Carter had
arrived late for work, he would almost have trouble doing
everything he sees in the ER while Dr. Peter Benton was gone.
However, Dr. Greene’s old friend wasn’t the only one to have
problems, but it was also that Mark had noticed that his 2nd
best friend/partner, Dr. Susan Lewis, had left Chicago to move
to Phoenix in: Union Station, where she leased her
apartment before she kissed Mark goodbye on the El Train, also
he wanted to rent it, as well.
During the end
of Season 3, Dr. Greene did a lot of things in: Random Acts;
like golfing with his best friend, Dr. Douglas Ross; taking his
daughter (Rachel) out to a conference, and finally, he went to
the bathroom to where he was bodily beaten and was attacked by a
stranger. Everybody knew what went on with him, just to make
sure he’d be alright by who would did it and why? When he was
still behaving like this, he’d returned to work still in that
same matter knowing that he was going to have enough trouble
dealing with in: Make A Wish. However, Mark Greene’s
wish didn’t come true when he purchased a gun and was going to
shoot a lot of juveniles in the 3rd Season Finale of:
One More For The Road, where on the El Train after
they’ve told him they’ve begged/pleaded and demanded for his
money; and Mark told all the punks to, “GET BACK ON THE
TRAIN. . . GET BACK ON THE TRAIN. SHUT UP, SHUT UP!!”
Season 4 traveled the cast/crew on the East Coast as they
recorded an episode called: Ambush, when they invade
County General to follow Dr. Mark Greene and his colleagues, he
along with his fellow friends were uncomfortable at first, but
in the end, after all that, he was finally happy to take to the
crew and give them a perspective about his attack. At the same
time, Dr. Elizabeth Corday ((A British Trauma Specialist)), came
to the ER, not just to work, but to also have a lot of fun and
spread tragedies, too. Just before she met the former big boss
and married Mark in Season 7---her 1st stop was to
meet the intense surgeon, Dr. Peter Benton and the two slowly
dated. In: Ground 0, while Greene was still having
problems, Ross received some bad news---his father, Ray Ross had
passed away and Douglas’s best friend offered help at that
point; the following day, when the 2 headed to San Diego, in
which they both did, and they personally invited, Nurse Carol
Hathaway, as well in an episode of: Fathers And Sons, in
which Drs. Ross/Greene both try to rent a sub compact car to
identify the body of Ray Ross (Douglas’s Father). What Douglas
had learned was that his father had died into a car accident
which lead into drunk driving prior to running a stop sign at
120 MPH that killed 2 people + himself, in San Diego,
California.
During that
sad time outside of the ER, Drs. Ross/Greene & Nurse Hathaway
all had something to drink while mourning for the loss of Dr.
Ross’s father. But Doug’s father wasn’t the only one to be
living in San Diego, Mark’s parents live in San Diego, as well,
only by 4 hours, and by the time his father came by to see him,
he was hooked up to an oxygen level and had emphysema, along
with David Greene’s wife, Ruth, she was very happy to see Mark
and had something to drink. As Dr. Greene came back from his
best friend's father’s funeral in California, the letter that
Dr. Ross had wrote to Nurse Hathaway had been misplaced, which
lead to Mark’s romantic complications in: Freak Show.
When it says, “CH,” it didn’t necessarily meant, “Cynthia
Hooper,” it stood for “Carol Hathaway.” Dr. Ross
also returned the following week after his father’s death, but
that wasn’t the only sad time around when more of this had
happened in: Family Practice, that Dr. Greene had to go
back to San Diego to take care of his mother who broke her leg
and needed an MRI which lead to seeing a psychiatrist. She was
in jeopardy, but his mother wanted Mark to know how much re
really loved her, as much for his father. Long after Mark had
returned from his trip in San Diego, California, he along with
Jerry was planning to have the annual ER banquet in:
Gut Reaction. According to the storyline, Jerry’s mother is
cooking up a smorgasbord, and a deposit wasn’t put down for a
band so they end up with a one man orchestra. But while working
on it, he told Dr. Del Amico that she had matched for a bone
marrow patient out of state to where she wanted Dr. Carter to
perform the procedure on her and had finally accepted. She’ll
be sore and won’t be able to make it to the banquet with him.
While Anna was recovering, everybody except her, and Dr. Benton/Corday
will be attending the banquet, and Dr. Greene wanted to thank
everyone for their appreciation and what he found out was that
how much he appreciated them as much as they appreciated him
ever since his attack from last year. The ER was a part
of his family, and by the end of the scene, while Dr. Ross was
singing, “That’s Amore,” with the gang, Dr. Greene had
danced with Dr. Weaver on that song which was a blessing.
After a weeks
worth of celebration of the ER banquet and the departure
of the stressed-out Dr. David Morgenstern, it was: A Hole In
The Heart, that Drs. Weaver/Greene were taking care of 2
Elvis impersonators while Jeanie and Anna were meant to work on
the younger one, which happened to be the 4th season
finale of the series. When Mark was busy working, Kerry had
decided to resign as Acting Chief of the ER due to the fact that
she was sick and tired of her colleagues trying to behave so
political and she was very furious that hospital politics
surround the hospital ground. Later on in the 5th
season, a 3rd yr. Medical Student, Lucy Knight, came
by to become one of Dr. Carter’s student’s ((Dr. Greene’s
successor)), in: A Day For Knight, in which she was
taking a quick tour which sometimes lead into complicated
memories and things of what she’d best described in a patient,
and almost like Dr. Carter, on which we saw The Pilot-24
Hours ((A.K.A. The Longest Day)), she too had bumbled into
the emergency room, was also inexperience like Carter, and later
gave Mr. Zwicki more medical terms rather than in layman despite
of the confusion that not only caused by his wife, but also Drs.
Carter/Greene were concerned about the explanations that a 3rd
yr. Medical Student (Lucy Knight) is supposed to be using and
why? Also, by the end, everybody in the ER was surprised
that Dr. Kerry Weaver was to tell Jerry that she was getting too
tired of reminding him to take the body into the morgue, but
instead, Nurse Malik was hidden underneath along with the cake
he had in his hand, and the best part was, everybody made that
wonderful surprise of Jerry. And just after John’s medical
student had arrived, his successor, Mark Greene tried to spend
private time with Dr. Amanda Lee in; Hazed And Confuse,
as new chief; but she was still hysterical of her questioning
and Mark’s best friend, Doug had more questioning concerns about
the possibility of a new job in: Nobody Doesn’t Like Amanda
Lee. In: The Storm, before Douglas gets the new
job---Mark was very disappointed after he trusted his best
friend and gave him a chance to figure that whole thing out.
Both him, along with Dr. Donald Anspaugh had heard about Dr.
Ross who gave Joi the code to the P.C.A. machine to administer
the dilaudin; and with the problems that he was having, Anspaugh
had closed his girlfriend’s clinic just before telling Drs.
Kerry Weaver/Mark Greene about that incident. Incidentally,
Hathaway talked to Dr. Robert Romano and Dr. Douglas Ross had
apologized and she’d learned that he was being self-centered and
for not taking responsibilities of his own actions.
Later, after
all of that chaos and being the patient (himself) for the last
time, he left County General to work for the Pediatric Ward in
Portland and later move on to Seattle; in the following year.
He hoped to take Nurse Hathaway with him, but she refused as she
decided to stay in the ER for 1 more year. As: Sticks And
Stones would break Carol Hathaway’s bones, she called Doug
and had told him what’s gong on with his new life, afterwards,
she ran into Mark to remind him that she’d been experiencing
headaches and insomnia. He wanted to do a CT on her on which he
did and she was OK, ain’t nothing wrong with her. In the
series’ 5th season finale of: Getting To Know You,
after Drs. Corday/Greene were almost ran by a car, the 2
were walking accidentally on Nurse Hathaway giving herself an
ultrasound, and it was Elizabeth’s job to help Carol’s
response. “Twins,” is what she described as Corday was working
on her. During the 6th season---new doctors and
medical students came by in: Leave It To Weaver. During
the busiest time in the ER, Drs. Kerry Weaver/Mark Greene
try to baffle out the competition of who’s the new Chief of
ER, who happened to be: Dr. Robert “Rocket Romano ((who came
in late October 1997)). Together, along with Dr. Romano, the
three were at a meeting hearing a bunch of rumors about County
General and with Dr. Weaver’s behavior continued to be so
argumentive in the process. After the meeting, Mark’s father,
David Greene, from San Diego, had received a phone call in the
ER about Mark’s mother. He said that she died of a heart attack
and was devastated by the loss like Douglas Ross’s father’s
death, 2 yrs. Earlier. After that short loss of Mark’s mother,
Ruth, Dr. Weaver had introduced him to her teacher, Dr. Gabriel
Lawrence. His 1st job was to discharge one of Dr.
Greene’s patients and the 2 weren’t even close together; also he
made an error of a young girl who had Sickle Cell Disease, as
Mark’s: Greene w/ Envy. It was: Truth And
Consequences that Dr. Lawrence was having trouble
remembering things and everybody had noticed this but Weaver.
He’s so confused and can’t remember most of the things, but
Emmy-Winner actor, Alan Alda ((in real-life)) had wrote a poem
for everybody who’ll understand him. As: Family Matters
had taken a toll on Mark in the ER, he immediately asked
his estranged father, David to live with him in order for him to
be taken care of, and after he’d left his retirement home in San
Diego. As Mark’s: The Domino Heart got worse on his
father, David had learned that there were a bunch of noisy
neighbors as he was experiencing difficulty living with his own
son, and at the same time that Nurse Carol Hathaway, who’s
experiencing post-partum depression. However, on February 14,
2000, Dr. Elizabeth Corday had took care of an ailing Lucy
Knight in: All In The Family, that Drs. Corday/Romano
were trying to help save her after a young man had stabbed her
along with Dr. Carter both in the chest which lead them to fall
down, did the very best they could and she died, at 2:56 A.M.
While Dr.
Peter Benton was saving the former medical student’s, ((Dr. John
Carter’s)), life Carter was on his way to recovery and later his
grandmother had confronted him that he needed to get some time
away from working. In March 2000 on an episode called: Under
Control, Mark’s father, David was diagnosed with lung cancer
and had found out it was inoperable ((just like his son’s cancer
was inoperable, the following year)), soon after he had
complications of pneumonia, so to make matters worse, Mark had
brought his dad to County General for this and his almost
daughter-in-law ((who’s a surgeon)) had found out that something
was wrong, then later after his father’s diagnosis, Mark took
his father out on the boat which might’ve been: The Fastest
Year, for Dad & Mark. But the following week when something
was wrong, his father went back home and Mark did the same as
well when he was supposed to be taking care of his invalid
father in: Loose Ends, in which his father had told him
that how much he loved Mark just as much as Mark loved his
father, but prior to falling asleep, his father, David had
passed away in his sleep, and he & Elizabeth were so devastated
about his dad’s loss. But it wasn’t over yet, that in the near
season finale of: Such Sweet Sorrow, that Dr. Greene had
to bury his father’s ashes right next to his mother’s after she
died, and he took Rachel to see his grandmother’s favorite spot
in Chicago. Also in that same episode, after Nurse Carol
Hathaway had refused to listen to Dr. Kerry Weaver’s rules of a
cancer patient, she had decided to leave County General and had
told Dr. Greene that she would speak to him in about a couple of
days, also, Hathaway told Dr. Luka Kovac, that she wasn’t right
for him and he’d learned that there is going to be just 1 lady
who’d date him. When Carol had left Chicago to go on a plane to
Seattle, she was going to find out where Doug was, and
hopefully, she’d be able to spot him, and she did, so she took
the plane to Seattle to see her soul mate/boyfriend, Dr. Douglas
Ross, and was very happy and delighted to be reunited with
somebody who needed to be spending time with not just the twin
children, but also with Douglas. She has had a happy life
compared to him. In the 6th season finale of: May
Day, Dr. Carter was shooting pain medication in his wrist as
Nurse Abby Lockhart had found the patients’ old chart, and she
would see what John was doing but didn’t share anything unto
him. Also, Dr. Greene was going to have Dr. Carter to see a
shrink, after he was being bipolar. Greene had talked to Weaver
about Carter’s behavior, and everybody was wondering about a
doctor who has had many problems since Carter’s attack ((just as
it happened with John’s successor, Mark Greene, in the 3rd
season)).
As Dr. Carter
became very responsible for the death of medical student, Lucy
Knight, Dr. Greene ((once again)) talked to his friend about
seeking a psychiatrist for him. After 2 conversations, and had
been stabbed by Peter, he along with Dr. Benton had traveled to
Atlanta just before John would be in serious trouble. In the 7th
season of the critically-acclaimed show, In: Homecoming,
while Drs. Carter/Benton were still in Atlanta to seek some
psychological advice and later enter into a drug rehabilitation
center for Carter, Drs. Greene/Corday came back from vacation
and they see a lot of new medical students and Dr. Malucci had
took them on a tour based on Greene’s advice. But before that,
Elizabeth’s boyfriend was scratching as he ((Mark)) caught
poison ivy while camping that summer. When he recovered from
it, he would be playing ice hockey with Dr. Malucci in:
Benton Backwards when he wore his skates and strapped on his
belt for big-time danger on ice. After the death of Dr.
Greene’s parents, and the departure of Nurse Carol Hathaway,
everything went well during his work and after attending a
hockey game with, Dr. David “Dave” Malucci, something went wrong
on, Thanksgiving Day, November 23, 2000, when on: Rescue Me,
he was diagnosed of a brain tumor, and he was unable to speak
unto everybody about this. In: The Dance We Do, after
Dr. Carter had argued with Dr. Greene about not ordering the
Naltrexone level and needing to purchase it, Mark had a seizure
and everybody had heard right, with the exception of Mark,
because he behaved like nothing was about to happen that way.
After his seizure; The Greatest Of Gifts, that Mark would
ever get, was that he flew to New York, and he proposed to
Elizabeth Corday before surgery and Christmas and he wanted to
marry her after all hopes/spirits would go high on this beloved
doctor. With a: Piece Of Mind, while everybody’s working
in the ER, including Drs. Weaver/Kovac/Carter/Benton & Romano on
a man who was in a car accident before suffering a heart attack,
Dr. Greene had underwent brain surgery in New York City with Dr.
Corday by his side, and the neurologist wanted Mark to identify
objects before naming things that start with the letter, “B.”
His surgery had went so successfully and Dr. Burke will give
Greene an opportunity to recover and go easy from then on.
After his surgery and acing the competency test, he married her
on when it turned out to be: April Showers, that Mark
along with Dr. Benton’s former girlfriend, Elizabeth who both
had to face obstacles before they got married near the end of
the scene; but just before that, Dr. Benton had drove him to the
chapel, however, there was heavy traffic on the expressway and
in the midst of the chaos, he was saving patients. 1 day after
Elizabeth & Mark had been married, and after Elizabeth’s new
husband sand the song, “Come Sail Away,” which is
actually: Sailing Away, the couple gave birth to a baby
girl, they named her Ella after her mother. The couple were
very delighted after Mark’s brain surgery. In: Rampage,
which was the 7th season finale, after getting
married, Dr. Greene had learned that his personal connection
with the madman may interfere with his new wife, Dr. Corday, and
their baby. Also, there were a lot of patients who were
bleeding/dying and needing help, and most of them had all been
dead by now. When Mark was in the elevator trying to rescue a
patient, it didn’t go any further. It stopped.
In the 8th
season of the #1 dramatic medical show, more chaos was coming
along the way, starting with: Four Corners, as he
ministered into a weeping young lady who’d been injured, soon
after, he personally had to fight his own demons when the
medical board investigates a serial killer. More chaos was yet
to come as: Jennifer Simon’s + Mark Greene’s rebellious teenage
daughter, Rachel appeared at County General Hospital after she
ran away from her mother. Dr. Greene must’ve made a hard
decision about the place where Rachel wanted to live and how
she’d do; in fact, her father had compromised that Rachel is
going to stay with Mark & Elizabeth ((who are both doctors in
the ER)) rather than being with Jenn, who was very upset; and
his daughter listened to some music that was a little different
than Dr. Carter’s, Blood, Sugar, Sex, Magic. And at the
same time, Mark had confronted Kerry that she can’t be firing
people she doesn’t like, including that of Dr. David “Dave”
Malucci ((the skirt-chasing resident)), on which he along with
Dr. Chen had both killed a guy in the elevator and thought he
knew what he doing, but he didn’t and that was how he got fired,
Dr. Chen had retained her job!! Never Say Never comeback
to County General after a 5 yr. absence of the ER,
that Dr. Greene’s best friend, Dr. Susan Lewis came back to be
interviewed and had made new friends, including Mark’s new wife,
Dr. Elizabeth Corday, and Dr. Lewis wanted to have lunch with
Greene. When Susan had to: Start All Over Again, she was
returning herself to work and she clashed with Nurse Abby
Lockhart among many others, especially with the woman with many
seizures. She was also a misunderstood patient, so to speak.
But several weeks before December 25th nears in:
I’ll Be Home For Christmas, Dr. Peter Benton’s son was going
to trial and he was in a state of rage and frustration. The
cranky Dr. Robert “Rocket” Romano was trying his hand at giving
him more hours, but Peter had decided to move on. He wanted to
leave the ER in order to spend more time with his son,
and at the same time, Peter’s 2nd girlfriend, Dr.
Cleo Finch, had left the ER as well, because she knew
that she was hired at the clinic. However, he along with Dr.
Finch would both return to Dr. Greene’s funeral in: On The
Beach, as they both paid tribute to a wonderful friend, who
became the ultimate survivor!! Before Mark had a brain tumor,
his daughter, Ella had been taken care of before something went
wrong. It all started with Rachel retaining the ecstasy pills
in her backpack and handing them to Ella to place in her mouth.
She threw up on her bed and their mother was in a crisis.
Elizabeth wanted her stepdaughter (Rachel) to call 911, but she
ran off instead. Rachel had told her stepmother, Corday that 2
pills had been missing. After confronting that long
conversation about the pills that didn’t belong to her. . . .she
said she was really sorry and that didn’t do her any good. Dr.
Greene said that the pills his daughter gave her might die and
after: Damage Is Done, they hugged. When it’s: A
Simple Twist Of Fate, Mark cannot speak in-front of his wife
after he bit his tongue, so it’s Dr. Susan Lewis to the rescue
to see if her veteran colleague is doing OK, but Greene’s worst
is yet to come as his brain tumor came back, as he was having a
speech delay, once again, therefore, he needed to go see an MRI
in: It’s All In Your Head, it was way different than what
it was last year, because Dr. Burke had given 5 mos. to live
((but what Mark’s doctor said that he should’ve died the past
year ago, however, since his surgery was so successful, the
doctors gave him 1 more year to live)). He got the radiation
and was on medication, and was about to be away from work. He
wanted to escape from seeing doctor to doctor in order to
immerse himself in his work, refusing to do what some patients
do.
But to end his
life’s work, he left the ER in a comfortable matter and what he
said during his last days of work was, “Never Let Your Work
Become Your Life, Live A Little.” in an episode called:
Orion In The Sky, in which he said those words to his boss,
Dr. Kerry Weaver, way after he met the cocky yet obnoxious young
former VA intern, Dr. Gregory Pratt, who already finished 9 mos.
working at Veterans Administration, and will be at county for 3
mos. on an internship and a resident in July. And at the same
time, he immersed in his work for the last time, and he even
worked with original patients taken from The Pilot Episode-24
Hours ((A.K.A. The Longest Day)), like Al Ervin, the junk
dealer who was diagnosed with diabetes and Mrs. Raskin, who
still had a toenail hanging, but who he didn’t meet in the pilot
was a young alcoholic woman turned mother, Shane, who was
pregnant and was about to have an emotional baby and he
continues on talking, and talking about it and she asked Dr.
Greene to STOP IT!! Soon after that, Mark replied to Shane, “Congratulations…You’re
a Mother!” After Dr. Greene had escaped the ER,
if Dr. Pratt’s qualifications matches County General, then will
be working in the ER, along with Dr. Carter. In a
heartwarming episode called: The Letter, Dr. John Carter
read the letter from Dr. Mark Greene to the staff about how he
would enjoy his life in Hawaii just before he die, what he wrote
was that he was enjoying his time at the beach with his children
and wife where Elizabeth was drinking juice, while he was all
about the Mai Tais. What he’d also wrote was that Rachel was
dipping Ella’s toes in the ocean as they head off the quest for
the perfect seashell, he also stated that many times he could’ve
gone on to another private practice or even a clinic, where it
could’ve been less grinding, more lucrative, and much easier,
but he didn’t. What Dr. Carter had learned a lot from his old
friend was that he (Mark) was an incredible doctor, he was also
a good teacher, and that the ER couldn’t go on without him, if
somebody were to be filling that void. When Dr. Greene had to
leave, he had to think about some other way and that meant that
he didn’t value of anything that he did or the things he said in
front of anyone. Finally, to end Mark’s letter, he was writing
a list down, Ella is waving and laughing while Rachel had found
her shell. While Dr. Greene was gone, everybody went to the bar
to celebrate Dr. Mark Greene’s life and most of his
friends/colleagues had drunk there, and what Dr. Susan Lewis had
told everybody that Dr. Greene had a party there once during his
celebration. After Dr. John Carter finished reading the letter,
Dr. Weaver cleaned out Dr. Greene’s locker as she gave it to Dr.
Pratt, who just matched County, and while she cleaned it out,
John had found Mark’s stethoscope. What Weaver had told Carter
that somebody’s been looking for a person in order to fill the
void, and that he’d been there longer than any other doctor,
next to him. When she couldn’t clean out Greene’s locker, she
asked John if he’d be interested in doing it and next year,
he’ll be the “top dog,” of the ER, as he cleaned the
locker of his veteran colleague. Also, on the same episode, Al
Ervin, continued to asked for Dr. Greene’s help when Dr. Pratt
didn’t know what to say, however, Dr. Greene was off and Dr.
Carter had been replaced.
So near the
end of 8th season finale, and on May 9, 2002, on an
episode called: On The Beach, just before Mark went to
Hawaii to spend a little time for the last time, he would have
to write down a list of more than 10 things about what he’d
always do but never had the time for, and he read the list to
Elizabeth. Later as he flew to Hawaii, he taught his daughter
Rachel, how to surf, listen to music like: John Lennon, Todd
Rundgren, among many others, drive and then to be reconnected,
before he had a seizure. When daughter Rachel had found him in
a grand mal seizure, it’s Dr. Elizabeth Corday to the rescue as
she was badgering him to get a CAT scan followed by an MRI, and
to see a neurologist, and once again, he refused to go back to
Chicago in order to enjoy his last days living in Hawaii to
where he grew up. Just before he dreamed about the kids playing
in the sand at the beach and Dr. Greene standing in the halls of
an empty ER, Mark always encouraged her to be generous, with her
love, time and life. After Rachel had played, “Somewhere
Over The Rainbow,” Elizabeth comes to check up on her
husband, and he passed away after a 1 yr. battle of a brain
tumor, and Elizabeth Corday and her new family had been wept by
the loss of a beloved doctor who did everything he could. To
mourn big, he’s leaving behind his wife, Dr. Elizabeth (Corday)
Greene, his ex-wife, Jennifer (Greene) Simon, his boss, Dr.
Kerry Weaver, his friends, Dr. Peter Benton, Dr. Cleo Finch, Dr.
Luka Kovac, Dr. Donald Anspaugh, Dr. Susan Lewis, Medical
Student, Michael Gallant, the ER chief of surgery, Dr. Robert
“Rocket” Romano, Nurse Abby Lockhart, Desk Clerks, Jerry
Markovic & Frank, his 2 daughters, Rachel & Ella, and finally,
his old colleague, Dr. John Truman Carter III, who’s going to be
replacing him next year along with newcomer, Dr. Gregory Pratt.
