Death
is certain when you work in the ER. Dr. Greene lost his mom and dad, even before he lost his own fight with
cancer. The paramedics lost a Hero to a fire after saving the lives of
others. Carol took the Long Way Around and watched as a man killed a
store owner and kept her and others hostage before getting shot and
killed by the police himself. We watched Peter's mother and ex-girlfriend both die, even one of his med-students was hit by the El train. Who
will ever forget the brutal death of Lucy Knight and the sorrow that
Jeanie Boulet felt when Scott Anspaugh was taken at such an early age
to cancer? Luka was flooded with memories of his family as he took care
of a bishop before he passed away. Mark went with
Doug to pay respect to his estranged father after being killed in a car
accident and Mark also watched as one of his patients fought cervical cancer and lost,
leaving two small children behind. Carter has seen death many times, he
even recently lost his grandfather, while being flooded with memories of
his brother who died earlier in his life. Let's take time to pay
our respects and remember those who came in to the ER, but never left.

Those we have lost:

Lucy Knight
On February 14, 2000,
medical student Lucy Knight was brutally stabbed by a 23 year old law student
named Paul Sobricki. She was to pass him off to Psych., per Carter's
request. Carter sees that the patient is still on
the board, so he goes to look for Lucy. Paul's room is dimly lit when
Carter walks in. He doesn't see anyone in the room, but notices a Valentine card
on the floor and bends down to pick it up. As he is looking at the card, Paul comes
out of the shadows and stabs Carter in the back. Carter struggles to remain standing, and calls out for anyone, but they
are unable to hear him because of the loud music being played at their Valentines
Party. Carter falls to the floor in agony. He tries to push himself up, but he
is too weak and he cannot. As he realizes that he is getting ready to pass out,
he looks across the room and, horrified, his eyes growing wide, sees Lucy lying
on the floor, on the other side of the bed, struggling to stay alive. They were both found later by Dr. Kerry Weaver
after she saw bloody footprint on the floor. She opens the door to the
exam room and is shocked at her gruesome discovery. Dr. Elizabeth Corday and Dr. Romano
try to save Lucy's life. Lucy's vitals drop and they try to save her, but
it doesn't help. He makes yet another
attempt at cardiac massage and orders Elizabeth to charge paddles, screaming,
Come on, Lizzie, let's go!, but she stands immobile, finally having accepted the
hopelessness of the situation. At last Romano also relents, telling her to call
it. With regret and exhaustion, Elizabeth notes the time of death: 02:56.
Kerry comes in as Romano is cleaning Lucy up and she covers her with a
sheet.

Mark Greene
Mark starts showing signs of
being ill in Season Seven's "Rescue
Me". He learns quickly that he
has an inoperable brain tumor. He keeps
it from Elizabeth for a few days, but finally
tells her what is going on. They fly to
New York during the holidays and Mark gets
operated on. After some treatments and
time has passed, it looks as if Mark is going
to be okay. Mark gets to enjoy the
arrival of his new baby girl, Ella. In
Season Eight, he also gets to enjoy the
arrival of his older teenage daughter,
Rachel. Rachel causes a lot of chaos in
the Greene household, but something more
chaotic happens; Mark's brain tumor is back
and he only has a short time. By the
time his estranged wife finds out, Mark only
has a few weeks to live. He tells his colleagues
at the ER that it is time for him to go.
He goes with Rachel to Hawaii to show her
where he grew up and hopes that the time
together can fix their broken
relationship. Mark passes away while he
is there with his wife and two daughters close
to him. Dr. Corday faxes a letter to the gang at the ER to let them know how he
Mark feels about their time together. Dr.
Mark Greene will be greatly missed by those he
left behind.
