The show opens with a man in a hotel bed with two women. It is night time and
he tells the two women that he has to go, but will see them both in the
morning. He tells them that they can order room service for dinner and he
will be back at breakfast. One of the women tries to convince him to stay,
but he tells her that she knows how devoted to his work he is.
Sam and Dr. Gates are out in the ambulance bay waiting for arrivals. She is
surprised to see him working that night. Sam apologizes for what happened at
Ikes the other night. She blames it on the few drinks she had. She doesn’t
want it to be weird around each other and knows that he has something going
on with Julia. He tells her that Julia is in Nepal on a spiritual retreat.
Sam seems pleasantly surprised. She tells him that now “they will have time
to get it out of their system” or “get over it”, referring to their
attraction to one another. A man walks up yelling for help and is carrying a
woman named Mia in his arms. She has stopped breathing. He tells her that he
thinks it is her heart.
A red-headed woman is showing the new doctor around. He comments on the ruby
necklace that she is wearing and seems to be a flirt. Sam and Gates come in
to the room and place Mia on the gurney. Her boyfriend Jordan is with them.
Pratt comes in to assist. Jordan tells them that she had a heart transplant
last year. The doctor introduces himself to Pratt as Dr. Simon Brenner, the
new Attending. Pratt is trying to find out why Mia is having a hard time
breathing. Dr. Brenner steps out of the room and comes right back and asks
if he can try something on Mia. Pratt wants to know what it is and he tells
him that it is sublingual captopril and nitro. Gates tells him that he wants
to start an airway first, but Brenner tells him that it will only take a
second and gives it to her. As Pratt tells Jordan that they are going to
have to put Mia on a breathing machine, she comes to and stops them. She is
breathing on her own now thanks to the medicine Dr. Brenner gave her. “Those
lips, those eyes, It’s be a crime to intubate a face like that” he tells
them. Pratt and Gates just look at him.

Abby is looking at a snow globe and
remembering the time that she received it as a Christmas gift during Season
nine’s episode “Hindsight”. During the flashback, Luka and Abby are in a
bedroom at the party that Susan Lewis had at her apartment and Luka tells
Abby that they don’t talk much any more.
She tells him that they should fix that and he caresses her arm. “I miss you
Abby”, he tells her. The flashback ends and Dr. Janet Colburn is knocking on
Abby’s door. She is worried that Abby is going to miss her flight. Abby
tells her that it has been delayed. Janet can sense that something is wrong
with Abby. Abby assures her that she is going to make this flight this time.
Janet tells her that Luka has been waiting a week for her already. Abby is
not so sure that he has been waiting. She tells Abby that she can’t keep
putting it off. “What if it doesn’t work”, she asks her. Janet replies, “It
works as long as you believe in it”. Abby tells her that she isn’t talking
about the program; she is talking about her marriage. Abby isn’t sure that
she can fix it.
Pratt asks Sam what it means when a phone doesn’t even go to voicemail. A
young woman walks up and asks if there is an Attending around. Laverne St.
John, a fourth-year student, is starting her rotation in the ER today. Pratt
is surprised that her first day is working an over-night. “Some girls have
all the fun”, she replies. Pratt tells her to get started with Dr. Brenner
in Exam room two and points her on her way.
Morris and Frank walk up to the admit. desk and Frank tells Morris “no, now
stop bugging me”. “This is for the advancement of science”, Morris tells
him. Morris has a grant proposal due tomorrow and he tries to get Sam to
help him with it by being his test subject for a hundred bucks. She asks him
what she has to do and he tells her that he wants to study the Physiological
effects of conducted electrical weapons. “Tasers?” she replies. He tells her
it is only a five second shock and she tells him “forget it” and walks away.
Gates takes Mia up for a biopsy and Jordan waits for her in the ER. Gates
tells Mia that Jordan seems like a good guy. She agrees and tells him that
they have been together for about a year now. Jordan is waiting in the exam
room with Sam and tells her that he and Mia have been together for fourteen
months. “A few days after she got the heart”, he says. They hit it off
rather quickly. Mia tells Gates that Jordan drover her to all of her
doctors’ appointments. Made sure she had all of her meds. He was her
recovery buddy. Jordan tells Sam that he can’t imagine being without her.
“Every day I thank God for bringing us together”, he tells Sam.
Dr. Brenner catches up with Dr. Pratt and thanks him for the med. student.
“Intelligent, enthusiastic and docile. I’m surprised you didn’t keep her for
yourself”, he tells him. Brenner tells Pratt that he will see patients on
his own without having to bother Pratt all night. Pratt seems more than okay
with that.
Pratt tells Sam that the family in Exam 4 is requesting a chaplain. She asks
him who is filling in for Julia while she is away and he tells her that
Julia quit and to ask her replacement, Father Brian. Sam seems surprised
that Julia has quit. Frank tells Pratt that there is a double trauma coming
in. One of the patients is a sixty-nine year old woman named Kelly Robinson.
She is an assisted living resident and is a victim of an assault with chest
trauma and a facial laceration. Chuny and Dr. Brenner ask her who beat her
up and she tells them that it was another resident. The other patient tells
her that she beat her up because she had dropped her during a trust
exercise. She fell off a table right onto the other patients head. Ms.
Robinson tells them that it was an accident, but the other patient
disagrees. Pratt takes the other patient to another trauma room.
Abby tells Janet that it seems like her whole life, she hasn’t had control
of a single thing. Janet tells her that it is because of the disease. Abby
lights up a cigarette and Janet continues to tell her that the way she is
thinking only leads to a relapse. Abby feels like she doesn’t deserve any
more chances, but Janet tells her who decides how many chances you deserve?
Abby tells her that Luka came to see her while she was in rehab during the
second week. She flashes back and we see that Luka had brought pictures of
Joe at the seaside. Abby understands why Luka didn’t bring Joe on his visit.
She knew that it would have been hard on her to see him. Luka tells her that
he only came back for a day or two to take care of some things. Abby asks
him what things and he tells her that he has quit is job at the ER. “I was
thinking I needed something else”, he tells her. Abby seems shocked and
upset. She asks him if he is going to stop practicing medicine and he tells
her that he might go into a different area. He needs a clean break. Abby
tells him that she will be done with rehab in two weeks and wonders if she
should meet him back in Croatia or if he will be returning to Chicago. He
tells her, “We’ll see”. Abby wants to know what he means by that and he
tells her that he and Joe feel happy with his family in Croatia. He wants to
know when she will be ready to tell him the truth about what happened with
her.
Dr. Brenner asks Dr. Weston what course of action he should take with Ms.
Robinson and doesn’t like his answer. He tells him to go next door to assist
Dr. Pratt. He then asks Laverne what she thinks they should do about Ms.
Robinson’s collapsed lung. The two women begin yelling at each other and
Pratt learns that they were once Librarians that worked together. Lavern
asks Dr. Pratt if he needs her and he wants to know why Dr. Brenner keeps
sending the students in there to assist him. She tells him that Dr. Brenner
didn’t like any of her ideas. Laverne tells Pratt, “He suggested that I go
to the library and read. He also suggested that I use a different shade of
eye shadow and do something different with my hair”. Dr. Weston tells Pratt
to please not make them go back in there with Dr. Brenner. Pratt has a talk
with Dr. Brenner. He reminds him that it is a teaching hospital and the
students look up to them as examples.

Sam asks Gates why he didn’t tell
her about the chaplain quitting. He tells her that he didn’t think it was
important. She decided that she was going to stay in Nepal for a couple of
years. He tells Sam that he was embarrassed that he was dumped like that.
“It is new to me”, he tells her. Gates and Sam talk with Mia and Jordan. Her
white blood count is high and her heart is being rejected. “The heart she
has got is perfectly fine. It’s a good heart”, Jordan tells them. “Just find
a way to keep it working”. Jordan is upset that Gates told him that Mia
might have to go back on the transplant list.
Abby and Janet are sitting in the airport. Abby is worried about having to
be honest with Luka about something she really doesn’t want to talk about.
Janet suggests that she only needs to tell Luka parts of what happened and
not go into details. Abby tells Janet that it was Kevin Moretti. Janet says
that it makes sense now. Luka had come to see Janet while Abby was in rehab.
In a flashback, we see Luka and Janet talking. He wants to know what
happened with Abby. She tells him that it is not right for her to be
speaking with him. Luka reminds Janet that she has been alone now for
several years since her husband left her. She tells him that she has stayed
healthy and made her life work. Janet tells Abby that she did not realize
how frustrated Dr. Kovac was.
Pratt checks in on Dr. Brenner and his patient. Ms. Robinson tells Dr. Pratt
how superb Dr. Brenner is. Pratt asks if the Residents are getting any
hands-on experience and he assures him that they are. They have been doing
minuscule tasks like taking packaging off of the tubes and rubbing Betadine
on the patient. Neela walks in for a consult and Dr. Brenner introduces
himself to her. She seems to like him. Morris walks up and tries to recruit
Neela as his test subject. She tells him to taser himself.
Sam and Gates speak with Mia while Jordan is out in the hall speaking with
her family. Gates tells her that he knows that she has quit taking her
medicines. Mia tells them that he knows Jordan loves her, but her heart was
from his fiancée’. She was in an accident and died and she got the heart.
She understands that she has let it go too far. She tells them that he is
not the one.
Janet tells Abby that being sober means being honest with yourself and the
people you love. Abby tells her that she has always been a liar. She has
lied to everyone, even to Janet. She did drink while she was at work. Abby
flashes back to where she had been drinking and Sam was assisting her with a
patient, from the episode "Coming Home". Janet tells her that we all lie. She has been sober for twelve
years and doesn’t know that she might relapse. Janet hugs her and Abby heads
to the plane.

Pratt has finally gets through to
Bettina’s answering machine. He tells her to check her cell phone; he thinks
something is wrong with her voicemail. He tells her to give him a call.
Morris tells Pratt that he has a new plan. He wants Pratt to shoot him with
the taser, but Pratt tells him no.
Gates brings Jordan back into the room with Mia. Mia thanks Jordan for all
that he has done for her. “I’ve done it for us”, he tells her. She tells him
that this past year has been a gift. She cries and tells him that things got
a little confused during this time in their lives. As she is trying to break
things off, Jordan makes an excuse to go out to the hallway. Gates follows
after him.
Abby is on the plane and she flashes back to her wedding ceremony from
Season 13's "I Don't". She is
telling Luka about a poem that she had read once. “I Carry Your
Heart With Me" by E. E. Cummings. She then flashes way back to where she first stole a kiss from Luka
back in Season seven while sitting out in the ambulance bay. He is telling
her that she is a good nurse, but she can be a great doctor. She continues
to have flashbacks from when Luka gave her the compass for Christmas back in
Season 12's episode "All About Christmas Eve".
“It seems we always find each other”, he had told her. She tells him that
she is pregnant. She also remembers when she asked Luka to ask her again to
marry her from Season 13's "Dying Is Easy...".
Pratt asks Chuny if she has seen Brenner around. She tells him that he is in
the room with the two elderly women playing peacekeeper. Brenner is asking
them to forgive each other. Michelle tells Kelly that she is sorry that she
hurt her. Kelly tells her that she is sorry that she didn’t use her full
strength to catch her. Michelle has been messing around with Kelly’s
boyfriend and they begin to fight again. Pratt and Brenner go out into the
hall. Pratt gets on to him for not letting the med. students assist with
important things. Brenner tells Pratt that Larry and Laverne are clueless.
He wants to encourage them to find new careers. Pratt reminds him that it is
a teaching hospital. Brenner leaves because his shift is over. He tells
Pratt that he has a date with two women. Morris walks in and is glad to see
Pratt. He asks him if he is ready to shoot him.
Gates has a talk with Jordan. Jordan is telling him about his dead fiancée
Beth. They had met when he was a senior in college. They got engaged two
years later. They never spent a day apart. It seems wrong when he lost her.
Jordan snooped around until he found out who got her heart. “I was a man on
a mission”. When he found Mia he wanted to stay connected. Gates tells him
that it is time for him to let go of Beth. Sam comes and tells Gates that
Mia’s stats are bottoming out. Her breathing is getting worse. Jordan lays
his hand on her heart.

Chuny and Frank watch on as Pratt
tasers Morris. Something happens with the taser and it does not discharge
after five seconds like it should. Archie falls to the ground after it shuts
off. It has been several seconds. Chuny and Neela check on him.
Jordan is still by Mia’s side. She has been is on a breathing machine that
is keeping her alive. She is able to speak. She starts to talk to Jordan and
he tells her that he knows.
Morris groans in an exam room. Chuny, Pratt, Frank and Neela look down at
him. Morris is unable to move. Pratt tells him that he will be fine in a few
hours. Morris doesn’t remember what happened. They tell him that the shock
lasted for over two minutes. Morris is happy about it. “Nobody has ever been
tasered this long before”, he tells them. “It’s publishable”. He tells them
that he would hug them, but he can’t move his arms.
Mia is getting better and Jordan tells her that he is going to go home
before he goes to work. He will call her tomorrow. Jordan thanks Dr. Gates
for his help. He knows it will be hard to go on when a piece of the girl he
loved for so long will not be a part of his life. Gates tells him that he
and Mia can still be friends, but Jordan says that it won’t be the same and
walks away. Sam tells Gates that it is almost 6A.M. and that “it’s like a
ghost town in here for once.” Gates tells her that Exam 4 is open and for
her to go get some rest. They flirt around and Sam goes in to Exam 4. She
reaches out and pulls Gates in the room with her and start to kiss and make
out.
Abby is in the Croatian airport and sees Luka in the distance. She walks
quickly over to him and they embrace each other.
