Pratt is walking the corridor
of the ER when Morris hurries after him. Morris says what he would do for a
thyrotoxic crisis and gives him some meds choices. Pratt tells him what to do
and is then confused about the question. Morris tells hem they should be
challenging one another with questions to be better prepared for their written
boards in a week.. Pratt tells him if he doesn’t know it by now but Morris is
distracted by the smile of a nice looking chick who passes in a slow motion
camera shot. He tells Pratt about all the chicks that are hitting him, wanting
a bite of the forbidden fruit…now that Hope is gone. He says it has been
happening since Hope gave him the promise ring. They promised they would be
faithful to one another while she is gone. Sam says it’s sweet and frank says
it’s stupid. Morris says what is stupid is that he didn’t put the ring on long
ago because he could have tapped a lot of hotties. Pratt asks about Abby and
Frank says she isn’t on until 10. Pratt hands Morris a chart and Morris say he
has to stay away from the ladies. Pratt says she is 85 and off Morris goes
past a gurney being pushed by Gates toward the elevator. He is giving a nurse
some orders and Sam approaches to say that Moretti is looking for him. Gates
is perturbed but heads for the break room. Gates has a real attitude and keeps
interrupting Moretti who is trying to tell him he has heard nothing but good
things from ICU about him. He wants Gates back in the ER. Tony is surprised
and says he will finish out the week but Moretti says he wants him back…today.
Gates is thrilled and says a very pointed thank you as he leaves the break
room. Moretti finishes pouring himself a coup of coffee and rolls his eyes.
Cut to the door leading from surgery. Crenshaw is whining
about the difficulty of the surgery and tells Neela he never should have
promised the guy he would make it out to see the Packers game. Neel asks about
family and Crenshaw says there is a son – Jeremy – who has just driven up from
Notre Dame. Neela heads for the family room to find him. She approaches a
young man sitting on the couch listening to an ipod. He takes his ear phones
out and stands up with a smile. He says he has been waiting for her. She
explains the complications in his ‘father’s’ surgery and the kid is nodding.
She is surprised at his reaction to bad news about a heart attack and
subsequent treatment for complications. She asks if he is all right and the
kid says he is a little bit nervous but psyched to be there. Neela tries to
explain that his father is in critical condition and calls him ‘Jeremy’. The
kid grins and says he is Harold Zelinsky, her new intern. Neela is
disbelieving and another guy approaches with flowers, He asks her if she has
news about his dad. Neela is dumbstruck as she looks back at Harold.
The phone is ringing and Joe is wailing from his nursery as
Abby awakens from where she has passed out on the couch. There is an empty
wine bottle and glass on the table next to her. It’s Luka. He says he has been
calling for three hours. She tells him she turned off the ringer so she could
get some sleep. The scene shifts to a house under construction. Luka is
talking to her while trying to deal with a carpenter. The scene moves to a
split screen set up as they talk to one another. Abby picks Joe out of his bed
and carries him down the stairs to the kitchen. He is still crying as she
takes a sippy cup of milk out of the fridge and settles him in his playpen.
Luka asks if it’s Joe crying and she says he just woke up. He apologizes for
not being around. He got stuck at the hospital. Says he tried calling her at
work and they filled him in about the MRI being normal. He tells her that with
the spinal fracture, even after surgery his dad can’t move his legs. They are
fixing his house with ramps and handrails in the bathroom. Abby is oblivious
to what he is saying and asks him when he can fly home. He says there is a lot
of work. She says he can fly on standby bit Luka tells her he knows there
would be a seat but he is going to be there at least another week. She is
having a tough time with the baby crying and her head. She is furious and ask
why his brother can’t finish up. He tells her he doesn’t like it ether but he
needs to do this. She drops into a chair and rubs her head as he ask her not
to make it any harder than it is. She pulls her hair out of her face and leans
in to the playpen. She tells him it's okay but they miss him. He says he
misses them too and she adds that they miss him a lot.
Cut to Pratt , who is injecting a pain killer in Theo thigh
of a guy lying on a gurney with a pencil sticking out of his leg. He tells the
nurse to set up for irrigation and he will be back once the skin is numb,
Morris rounds a corner with another medical question for him. Serum osmlality
calculations. Pratt answers but is obviously perturbed. Morris compliments him
as they head for the desk. Frank says someone is waiting for Morris. It’s a
hot chick - a pharmacologist - with an invitation for him to her art opening.
Just him. No one else. ‘Assess THAT, Dr. Pratt” he says ash she walks away.
Neela approaches with her new intern and introduces Pratt, Morris and the
‘grouchy clerk, Frank’ to him. Sam tells her not to go too far because they
have two car crash victims enroute. Neela tells Harold to get his coat and
meet her outside trauma. He is excited and tells them it’s going to be awesome
working with them. Morris says he looks like he is 12. Pratt says that interns
are getting younger and younger and Morris adds that they are getting older
and older. Neela says she asked and he told her he was 25. Morris sets a
kidney pan on the desk and says first one to verify his age wins the pot and
ask who’s in. Pratt, Frank and Sam think for a second and then pull out their
money.
Cut to the back door of an ambulance being opened and Gates
there to assess Bevin Guang, car versus a utility pole. He has no memory of
what happened. The woman in the ambulance next to them – Traci Martinez, his
passenger and pregnant girlfriend – says he fell asleep at the wheel and went
off the road. Pratt is there to assess her and Abby ambles up in sun glasses
and drinking form a water bottle. Traci says she should have been driving
because he works too much but Bevan says he doesn’t like her driving while she
is pregnant. She is 20 weeks along. Abby tells Pratt that she has it and ask
Traci if she was wearing her seatbelt. She says they will check her and the
baby out and make sure everyone is healthy.
Cut to Neela and Crenshaw walking in the hall. He tells her
that she needs to remember that she isn’t her intern’s friend but his
taskmaster. Interns need to be whipped. Neela says that isn’t her style.
Crenshaw says to make it her style. She needs to be Lou Gosset to their
Richard Gere. She is frowning and then says he is from Connecticut, right? He
says yeah and she suddenly steps in front of him and does the bit of a scene
from “An Officer and a Gentleman’ in the Gosset persona. Crenshaw is stunned
but she frowns and says that it doesn’t quite work with Connecticut. There is
a funny little smile on her face (as if she is remembering watching the movie
with Ray??) Crenshaw tells her that he’s not joking. Without discipline an
intern will screw up. Crenshaw tells her to bring him to his knees. Cut to
Harold watching through the trauma room door. Neela frowns and approaches with
a few stern questions for him. He tells her he was waiting for her and she
tells him he could have been halfway through his assessment.
Abby and Pratt are working on Traci. Neela introduces
Harold all around. Abby calls for a fetal Doppler and surgilube. Pratt notices
and comments on Harold’s ipod. Pratt remembers when you had to go to the
record store to buy music. Harold says he bought his first CD when he was 10.
In hopes of dating him he asks Harold what kind of music is on it, what his
first CD was…Eminem? Spice Girls? Harold responds that it was ‘Mozart’s
Clarinet Concerto in A major, Richard Stoltzman, soloist”. Neela says there is
no sign for an abruption and Abby says that it’s very good. She calls for a
serial crit and a fetal monitor. Chuny is confused so Pratt steps in with the
name. He asks Abby if she is okay and she says she didn’t sleep well, was up
all night with a bad stomach – probably a virus. Pratt tells her to go take a
nap. She protests but he says it’s slow and to go before they get slammed. She
nods and leaves. Neela is taking a cross off Traci for the x-ray and she asks
her not to lose it because it belonged to her grandma.
Cut to Gates, Moretti and Sam working on Bevan. He says he
forgot to eat breakfast and wonders if that is why he got dizzy. Sam asks if
he wants a head CT, says he will get a better image in radiology. Gates says
the dizziness only lasted a few seconds and to leave him there. It might be
cardiac arrhythmia. Moretti grins a little and says it’s a valid point. Bevan
is worried but Sam says they are just going to keep him in the cardiac monitor
for a bit. Chuny opens the door and asks about the Woods’ lamp. Bevan calls to
Traci and asks if she is all right. Traci tells him he is working too hard.
Moretti tells him to rest and that they will let them chat in a few minutes.
Bevan says he doesn’t feel so good and passes out. He is in V tach and they
shock him back into normal sinus. Gates says hat he is healthy 22 year old.
Cut to Abby trying to sleep. Chuny turns on the light and
comes in to search for the Woods lamp. She apologizes and says she will put up
a do not disturb sign. She turns off the light and leaves. Abby tosses and
turns in the dark and finally just stares at the ceiling as she hold her head.
Gates enters with Bevan’s chart and asks him family history
questions. Sam throws in a drug use question. He is hesitant but then tells
them he is working two jobs to save up enough for a bigger place. Two nights
ago he took a pill to stay awake. He got it from a friend. He wants to know if
it messed up his heart. Gates tells him his EKG shows a different
abnormality…a condition he was probably born with. He glances through the door
at Traci and tells Gates that he wants to be a good dad and is really trying.
Cut to Harold coming down the stairs and Morris calling
after him. Morris tells him that security needs a copy of his driver’s
license. Harold says he doesn’t have one. He took driver’s ed in high school
but never got around to taking the test. He rides the el and his bike if the
weather is good. He wants to know if Morris could use his hospital id? Morris
is deflated. They enter Traci’s room and Chuny mutters asking if Morris found
out. Morris says he is crafty. Harold is examining the ultrasound screen with
Neela. She is concentrating on the placenta but Harold notices pleural
effusions. Traci wants to know if her baby is okay. Neela explains that there
are some fluid collections. Harold asks if she is with children a lot. Traci
says she is a preschool teacher. Neela is aghast as Harold rips off the
statistics and percentages of complications to a pregnancy caused by fifth
disease. Traci is getting distressed and Neela steps in between them. Traci
starts to cry because he said she could be losing her baby. Harold is upbeat
and says she won’t with UV transfusions. Neela calms her down and says they
will do everything they can to help her and her baby. Harold grins and gives
her the thumbs up. Neela glares at him.
Cut to Abby coming out of the drug area tossing some pills
back. She approaches a hunky patient with a skin infection. He is a personal
trainer and she grimaces and tosses her head back as Chuny turns on a light.
Moretti passes and asks if she had a good name. Abby says yeah and thanks him.
Moretti and Pratt talk about the patients on the board and Pratt tells him
cardiology is on their way for Gates’ v tach guy. Morris approaches and
demands a question from Greg. He decides that it too easy so he makes up new
rules. Only tough questions and only when they are stressed. Frank asks Morris
to hurry up with the computer and then sees that Morris is looking at
coldshower.com… for anaphrodesiac herbal remedies. Frank tells him that if he
wants to lose his libido, get married and have a kid.
Coburn comes around a corner with Neela and Harold. She
tells them she is impressed because it usually takes an OB to assess hydrops.
She looks at the ultrasound and tells Traci that there is evidence of a
parvovirus in the fetus and it indicates that the bay is anemic. They need to
do a blood transfusion directly into the umbilical cord. Coburn is irritated
that Harold keeps interjecting comment and stat numbers to the conversation.
Traci asks if Bevan can be with her when they do it. Coburn said he can if
Kayson okays it. Coburn says she will get things set up. Neela says that Dr.
Zelinsky will assist her and Coburn is not happy. He follows her out. Traci
looks at Bevan and tells Neela that when she first found out she wasn‘t sure
she wanted the baby. Bevan stepped up and said they would do it together. It
brought them closer, but now she is not so sure.
Cut to a wound surrounded by blue toweling and Abby asking
if it is sharp as she pokes the skin with a knife. She tells him to let he
know if anything hurts. She makes a tiny cut and thick, creamy pus pours out
of the infected site. The nurse assisting says it smells anaerobic and asks if
Abby wants a wound culture. Abby nods and looks away. (Note to director: With
the safety glasses on it’s difficult to see that Abby is having trouble not
gagging with this patient.) Cut to Morris entering the curtained area ,
calling a name and pulling back a curtain. A very young and pretty woman is
sitting on a gurney. She asks if he is going to be her doctor. Morris studied
her for a moment, says he is not, turns round, sees Abby and leaves the room.
He steps up next to her and tells her there is a woman with foot pain he needs
her to see. The pus is still pouring. She is good to go.
Gates and Kayson are with Bevin. Gates tells him the stats
and says he is thinking Brugada Syndrome. Kayson tells Bevin that gates will
be back after he has discussed his recommendations. Gates follows Kayson into
the hall. They argue about the test findings. Kayson tells him to repeat his
enzymes and then he will be cleared for discharge. Kayson points out the
amphetamines I his urine tests. Gates tells him he hasn’t had anything in
three days. Kayson disagrees. As they are arguing, Traci hears them in her
room. Gates says he needs an implantable defibrillator. Kayson says he is not
admitting a speed freak and tells gates he had better learn to take the
recommendations of senior attendings if he has any hope of finishing his
residency. He stalks off. Gates watches him and then turns to look at Traci,
who is clearly distressed about what she heard.
Morris approaches the pus patient and asks if he has any
more pain. The guy says no and introduces Morris to his very hot looking
daughter. He avoids looking at her as he stumbles around with after care
instructions. He goes off in search of additional dressing and the daughter
follows him asking what kind of car he drives. She sells luxury cars and can
see him in a Z4. Morris is trying to get away form her but she follows him.
Sam is watching and listening and starts to laugh. Morris tells her he needs
tape. The woman asks about his wife and Sam approaches with 3 inch and tells
him he can make that work. Morris scowls at her and leaves. Sam passes Moretti
and gates as they are heading to Bevan. Moretti is aghast that Gates wants him
to over ride the head of cardiology. Morretti says they have to think about
working with Kayson in the future and Gates says they have to save patients
now. Morretti tells him to ‘get creative’.
Neela is explaining Traci’s need for a transfusion to
Bevan. He wants to talk to her but Neela says no. Bevan asks if it’s because
of the speed. He is angry and says it was only once….not like he is a tweaker.
Cut to Gates talking to Traci. She says she isn’t going to take any more of
his crap. He used to DJ warehouse parties and would be out all night with his
boys and she thought he was different now. Gates gives her the ‘people
change/not all black and white’ spiel. She brushes him off with the thought
that her baby is sick. She can’t think about it any more. Gates exits into the
hall where a woman is looking around kind of confused. She is looking for
Traci. She is Julia Dupree, the on call chaplain. Gates in interested as he
watches her go in to Traci
Abby is examining the foot of the Morris trade off patient.
The woman is aghast when Abby tells her to lay off the high heels for a few
months. In the next bed a little girl is banging a basin against the bars on
the bed. Abby asks the mom to make her stop doing that. Mom says the little
girl is venting her frustration. Abby says ‘well, so am I.” The mom takes the
pan away and the little girl starts with a high pitched shrieking. Abby says
she will be right back and goes out in the corridor. As s walks by him she
tells Morris his patient has Morton’s neuroma and Morris says he guessed as
much. Morris is examining the pus guy’s x ray when another hot girl
approaches. It’s the twin of the first girl. She sells cars too. When they are
both standing there they tell him they do everything together.
Cut to Coburn and Neela doing a blood transfusion on
Traci’s fetus. Julia is sitting near her head talking her through it. She says
they will pray together. Harold is raving about hitting a millimeter vein with
a 20cc needle. Aggravated, Neela send him out to do a rule out appy. Coburn
assures Traci that everything has gone perfect.
Pratt corners Gates about spending too much time with one
patient. Tells him he needs to get back into the ER way of things. Morris
steps up and peppers Pratt with a medical test question. Chuny passes with a
file and tells him that Kayson is discharging Bevan. Gates storms off after
her and Morris asks Pratt to name three bacteria for neonatal sepsis. Pratt
responds with ‘Kiss My Ass’ and stalks off. Abby is sucking on a water bottle
and rattles the bacteria off as Morris tells her not bad. Abby sticks her head
into the trauma room and tells Coburn she needs to talk to her. Coburn asks if
it’s another consult and she says no but to find her when they are done.
Coburn studies her for a second with a worried look.
Cut to Abby and Coburn coming out of the Jumbo Mart with
coffee cups in hand. Janet says she heard Luka is in Europe, something with
his dad? Abby tells her its multiple myeloma and Janet groans. She says she is
sorry. She asks if Abby is managing with Joe. Abby tells her that Joe is
amazing…walking, babbling, feeding himself….and he loves the books she got him
for his birthday. ‘Goodnight Gorilla’ has to be the last one every night. As
they cross the street Abby turns away and Janet slows. “You drank?” she asks.
Abby nods and tells her last night. Janet asks if she wants to get to a
meeting. Abby says she hasn’t got time for a meeting. It’s was only once and
she had a bad day…a very bad day. She isn’t going to start drinking again.
Janet asks her if she is an alcoholic and Abby responds ‘Yes, but…” Coburn is
doing a stunning job being compassionate, but firm. She tells Abby to keep
drinking and do the research. Abby is getting mad. She tells her she can
handle this. Coburn looks at her watch and tells her that she has a clinic
full of patients. She starts to leave and Abby stops her with ‘Janet, you’re
my sponsor.” Coburn stops and turns back to her. She says she was her sponsor
but it’s very simple now. If she has decided she is not an alcoholic she can’t
help her. If she IS an alcoholic she will support her in recovery. “Let me
know what you decide,” she says. Abby watches her walk away.
Abby enters the break room and heads to her locker as
Moretti is sitting at a table finishing up a phone call. He is talking to his
son at college. He hangs up as Abby is getting ready to go home and tells her
his son is in Rhode Island and having a hard time with college. He doesn’t
know if it’s normal school stress or something more. He feels like he isn’t
telling him stuff. He says it’s hard to know what is going on with somebody
even if it’s your own kid. Abby turns around and smiles and tells him they are
waiting for her to sign out. He tells her good night and then takes a deep
breath..worried about his phone call.
Abby comes out of the break room and heads for the desk.
Frank is in front of the computer and Pratt, Morris, and Sam are gathered
around him looking at the screen. She asks if he has heard anything from
ortho. Frank says he can’t find any information on him, not even a birth
certificate. No credit cards…not even a student loan. Abby interrupts
forcefully and they all look at her. Ortho? Frank says not yet and goes back
to the computer. Abby asks what they are doing and Pratt tells her a
background check on Neela’s intern. They are trying to get an age on him. Abby
is pissed and says she is there late because he can’t get CT results or call
for a consult and her attendings can’t hear about (she slaps files on the
desk) a migraine, a broken femur, a DK, an incarcerated hernia because they
are busy playing a game of ‘how old is the intern?” These are her pass ons.
Neela and Howard approach from the swinging doors. Abby turns to him and says,
“Hey, Howard, how old are you?” He responds that he is 25 and she asks how old
he was during the OJ trial. Howard stops to think and says that was like 1995
or something. Abby snickers and says “you are not 25.” He falters and says
‘you’re right, I’m 19.” The crew around the computer groans and he goes on to
say he started college when he was twelve…med school when he was 15. Abby
shakes her head and leaves. Howard says he got a perfect score on the SATs
when he was 11 so he knew he was ready for college. Neela tells him they need
to go check on the rule out appy and they walk away. Moretti moves to the desk
and pulls Gates aside. They head toward the trauma room and he says he
understands Kayson signed discharge orders for Bevan and Gates cancelled it.
Gates nods. Moretti asks if that is his idea of creative problem solving.
Chuny sticks her head out of the trauma room and says their patient is V tach
again. Gates and Moretti run in. Moretti tells her to call Kayson.
Cut to the twin daughters of the pus guy walking toward the
desk in unison. They are grinning at Morris who stiffly tells them their dad
was moved upstairs. They both kiss him and tell him they are sorry it didn’t
work out because they could have had some…fun….together. Pratt is grinning
slightly as Morris watches them walk away. Morris frowns and growls at Frank
about some test results. Pratt sidles close with a question for him about the
Ottawa ankle rules. Morris who snaps that he doesn’t have any time for games
and stalks away.
Gates and Morretti are shocking Bevan back into normal
sinus. Kayson enters the room and asks what is going on. Morretti says he was
pulseless v-tach and Kayson looks at the monitor strip. He says Bevan may be a
candidate for a n implantable defibrillator. Chuny says it’s a good thing she
didn’t discharge him because he would have died on the way home. Kayson says
he will go prep the EPS lab. Morretti looks up, asks Gates if he is okay and
then follows him out. Kayson agrees and says they don’t want to listen and
don’t want to learn. Morretti smiles a bit and says pointedly to Kayson that
the worst part is sometimes they are right.
Cut to Abby riding on the el. She is tired and looking
around. Her eye catches a passenger who is drinking from a bottle in a paper
bag. She watches him and her thoughts are interrupted by a woman asking if
something on the ground is hers. Abby looks down and picks up a plastic key
ring with keys. She studies it for a bit. Cut to Abby heading down some steps
toward another el turnstile. She pauses a moment before going through and then
turns and heads back up the steps.
Cut to Morris lounging on a gurney behind a curtain talking
to Hope on a cell phone. He is asking her about the weather…what she is
wearing… He starts as a nurse pulls the curtain back and says she needs the
bed. He straightens and makes like he is talking to someone about something
medical. We follow Morris through the halls as he continues the conversation
about what she does to cool off. He tells her he wouldn’t mind skinny dipping
with her late at night and then sneaking her back into her tent. He is looking
around the ambulance bay frantically and spies a paramedic wheeling a
stretcher into the hospital. He asks if he can use the rig for five minutes
because he has an administrative tour. Bardelli tells him yeah so Morris
climbs into the ambulance as he continues his conversation with Hope.
Neela and Gates are with Traci . her hydrops will clear up
with the transfusion and Gates tells her about Bevan and the ‘shock box’. She
asks if Gates thinks he was serious about not taking drugs again. Gates nods
and she says she needs to see Bevan. They are wheeling her out when Julia (the
chaplain) enters. Traci tells her that Robert Frost guy was right. Gates tells
her that she did great with Traci. She says she just held her hand and said it
was okay to be mad at God…she was all the time and didn’t get struck by
lightening. Gates ask about her training to be a chaplain and Julia says it
was no worse than med school. Gates wants to know if she had to take vows…and
she says she isn’t a nun. She is a woman who happens to be a chaplain. He is
quizzical and she says that he doesn’t get that she has a spiritual life and a
spiritual career but that she lives in the real world. She tells him he ought
to try it sometime.
Cut to Harold talking on his cell phone telling someone he
may have made a mistake That it’s not too late to change. He looks up and sees
Neela watching him. He disconnects the call. She approaches and asks if he is
okay. She tells him that she is not really a mean person but her boss said she
had to be in order for an intern to work harder and learn more. She is not
used to being tough. it's not her style and it’s not working. Harold agrees.
She tells him that from now on, things will be different. She will be more
supportive and won’t take credit for his good ideas. She sees Crenshaw
approaching and tells Harold to play along. She starts barking orders to him
and Harold is confused. He suddenly takes off up the stairs per her directions
and Crenshaw watches him scurry and tells her “Nice!” Neela rolls her eyes as
he walks away.
Cut to Abby walking down a strip of Chicago sidewalk under
the el and past what looks to be church steps. She eases her way through a
small crowd gathered around a door. She goes inside. Is it an AA meeting
place?
Cut to Gates coming out of the ER doors into the ambulance
bay. Morretti is standing there and Gates asks what he has. Morretti tells him
it’s a stab wound under the left nipple. Gates offers to stay but Morretti
tell him no…to go home. As he is walking away he tells Gates he did good work
today and it’s good to have him back. Gates looks back in disbelief and keeps
walking. Morretti begins to examine the patient coming out of the rig when
Morris steps out of the other ambulance. He passes Morretti and tells him it’s
a beautiful night and Morretti asks if he is all right. Morris saunters past
with a satisfied grin and says everything is good….real good.
