Abby is driving Luka’s SUV with Joe
and his nanny in the back looking at a book. Abby says that it’s crazy how
much he loves that book and the nanny says he must really miss Dr. Kovac Abby
says that it won’t be too much longer and the nanny says she wouldn’t want him
to forget who his dad is. The nanny is strapping Joe into his stroller and
Abby flips through the book as she tells the nanny to try to get him to eat
some kale today. She stuffs the book into his bag and then tells the nanny
that she will see her around 5. She bends down to kiss Joe and tells him she
loves him. The nanny leaves as she shuts the back of the van.
Cut to the ambulance bay doors as Pratt and Sam come out with
Mrs. Fratelli…who is trying to convince them to allow her to provide makeovers
for the ER staff. Her son, Paulie, was a patient and she wants to show them her
appreciation. Manis, pedis, massages…on the house all day. An ambulance pulls in
and Sam finally tells her to set it up in the break room. Mrs. Fratelli is
ecstatic. She asks Sam if she has ever thought of going blonde. Abby approaches
and Mrs. Fratelli hurries up and ask how she is. Abby responds that she is great
and asks how she is. It is apparent that she has no clue who the woman is. Mrs.
Fratelli says she will start with her and Abby asks who she is. The woman pulls
her off commenting about her brown eyes.
Pratt takes the patient from the ambulance and his brother is
one of the EMTs, The patient is Willie Archibald, 59 and a ground level fall. No
head injury or chest pain. His hip is killing him. As they are wheeling the
gurney in Pratt asks how Chaz is doing. His partner says he is doing great and
he loves breaking in rookies. Also says he wishes he’d had a doc for a brother
when he was coming up.
Cut to Tony on the phone talking to someone about Josh. Says
the kid is terminal and he is moving so something – the surprise he is planning
– will have to be done today. Tony is watching Josh and his mother pack his
things up as he is talking.
Cut to Morris and Sam walking through the corridor talking
about the makeovers. Morris says it will be good for morale but Sam doesn’t even
remember treating the lady’s kid. Morris is aghast. Sam asks if he remembers
everybody that comes through there. Gates approaches asking about a patient.
Pratt fills him in. Dawn tells Morris that his broken leg patient is complaining
and the crack addict won’t keep his gown on. Morris tells her to discharge the
broken leg guy and she asks about the crackhead. He tells her to avert her eyes.
Frank approaches with the new desk clerk, Javier, and introduces him to
‘everybody’. They all look up as Abby picks up a chart. She has had her hair
done and it’s a feathery “Farrah Fawcett’ like style. Morris tells her nice
feathers and she says the next person who says another word is dead meat. They
all watch her, grinning,.. and Sam punches Pratt as they stifle their laughter.
Abby and Grady are working on a middle aged patient
complaining of back pain/groin pain. He hasn’t fallen or injured himself, just
can’t get comfortable. Grady adds that he’d had a small hematuria the day
before. Abby says it sounds like a kidney stone and the wife moans about the
20th anniversary trip the next week. Abby assures her that he will be fine by
then and says they will give him some medication. She asks Grady what his plan
is as they walk toward the desk. He reels off meds and asks about labs. Abby
tells him to just do a UA to rule out an infection. He leans over as she is
wiping a name off the board and tells her that he…uh…likes…uh…what…. ‘Shut up,
Grady,” she says without missing a beat. Abby presents two patients to Pratt. As
he signs the charts he is questioning the meds/procedures and finally asks if
she is ready for the yearbook pictures later. ‘Bite me,” she says. He is
laughing as she stalks off. Pratt turns to Mr. Archibald and asks how he is
feeling. Chuny holds up his x rays and Pratt says there is not fracture but he
also has no space in his joint. Pratt tells Chuny to set up a rheumo screen. Mr.
Archibald asks what that is and Pratt explains that he has arthritis in his hip
joint, that all the cartilage is gone and it’s just bone grinding on bone. Says
he is surprised the guy is still walking and ask how he manages the pain.
Archibald blows it off and Pratt says he is going to refer him to the ortho
clinic because there is a good chance he needs a hip replacement. Archibald says
they told him that the year before but he can’t afford the insurance or the
surgery. He is 59 and too young for Medicare. Frank is standing closely behind
Pratt who finally asks if he can help him with something. Frank asks Archibald
for an autograph. He says he was originally from Cleveland and the only reason
he became a Miami fan is because he got traded down there. He spells out his
name and then asks Pratt if he hasn’t ever head of Wild Man Willie
Archibald…..one of the greatest quarterbacks alive. Frank notices the man’s ring
and asks if it is what he thinks it is. Archibald says it’s his ring from
Superbowl 8. Frank says he got three sacks in that game. Pratt leaves them to
reminisce and approaches the desk. Dawn and Javier are talking about their
common backgrounds as she holds her nails out to dry. She asks Pratt to hand her
a chart. Javier obliges and tells her those tips look fierce on her. Pratt is
disdainful.
Cut to Tony heading to the elevator with his ICU patient.
Neela says hello from behind a counter and he stops. He gives the nurse
directions about the patient and then moves to the counter to ask how Neela is
doing. She says it’ her first day aback and she’s good. She thanks him for the
flowers and get well card. He asks about Ray. She tells him as far as she knows
he is good. He sent her a letter the week before. Gates says, ‘Give him my best,
Mayday.” and turns to walk away. Neela says he never told her why he calls her
‘Mayday’. Tony says it’s the name of his favorite Bond girl. Grace Jones…starts
off as a bad guy and saves the whole world. Neela grimaces and he grins. Tells
her she is lucky because it could have been ‘Pussy Galore’. Nice exchange. Tony
heads to the elevator and runs into one of his EMT friends. The guy asks where
he has been and Gates tells him stuck up in the ICU. Bards asks why he didn’t
tell him about Chaz and Gates is confused. Morris is striding with Sam again and
compliments her on her new do. He asks if she has found anyone who remembers
treating Angie’s son and she says not a soul. Morris says he has ordered the
works package for the end of his shift…and his last night with Hope. Frank tells
him it will take more than that to save his ugly mug and Javier says “My god…he
is so mean.” Pratt tells him that’s his baseline and he will get used to it.
Javier hopes not. Katey steps up with a box for Ray and wants people to put
things in it for a care package. Sam asks how he is doing and Katey says she is
thinking about visiting him in a couple of weeks. Morris pipes up and says
welcome back as Neela ease her way toward them. They are all glad to see her.
Pratt asks how she is feeling and she says a little sore and stops in shock to
say ‘oh my god’ as Abby approaches. She is dumbstruck and Abby tells her ‘I
know…I’ll explain later.” Neela tells her she still has a few things left at her
place and wants to stop by later. She cannot take her eyes off Abby. Abby tells
her to stop looking at her like that and Neela says she can’t help it.
(Excellent reaction from Paraminder. She really has her game on in this
episode!) Morris says he thinks it looks good. Abby rolls her eyes as the
teasing from the rest of them continues. Pratt, Morris and Frank trade quips
about Charlie’s Angels and how Farrah was their favorite…she was so hot…the one
with the red bathing suit….would look at that poster for hours…the one with that
Mexican blanket thing….they had that one hanging at the precinct office and he
looked at it every day….did I ever have some boyhood fantasies about her….etc.
Abby’s eyes flip from them to Neela (who is still grinning) . She says this is
totally creeping her out. Sam adds ‘you and me both.’ Abby tells them she will
be in the ladies’ room if they need her and Neela says she will walk with her.
Pratt tells Frank to get the lab results on Mr. Archibald. Tony moves toward
Pratt and asks why he didn’t tell him about his brother. Could have made it
easier for him if he’d known. Pratt bristles and tells him to get back up to the
ICU. Frank hands Pratt Archibald’s lab reports.
Cut to Pratt talking to Willie quite sternly. His labs show a
drug dependency. Willie tells him he has been using vicodyn that his mother gets
for him. He can’t keep a job because he can’t walk…now he can barely drive for
his messenger job. He has been taking the vicodyn for years…maybe 3 or 4 a day.
Pratt tells him that he can get him on the free surgery list but Archibald says
he is on the list. It’s an eighteen month wait. Pratt is distressed. Tells him
he can’t let him keep popping vicodyn like its candy. He will see what he can do
to get him bumped up on the list. Willie finally removes the Superbowl ring and
hands it to Pratt. Tells him to sell it…maybe on eBay. Its real gold and
diamonds. Pratt tells him he can’t…but Willie says he can’t live with this pain
any longer. Please.
Cut to the bathroom where Abby is dousing her face with water
and drying it. Her hair is straight again and twisted into a hair clip in back.
Her cell phone rings and she takes it out of her pocket. ‘Wait..wait…wait…what
happened?” she asks. She asks where she is and then charges out of the bathroom
and through the ER to the ambulance bay. She bumps into several people and then
tells Grady to ask Pratt when he tries to stop her. She opens the door and races
out into the ambulance bay. She takes a blood covered Joe from the panicked
nanny and races back into the ER with him.
Sam is racing through the ER and passes Abby’s kidney stone
patient. His wife asks if she has seen her doctor because she said she would be
right back. Same tells her to wait a minute and then hurries into a trauma room
announcing that she has the pedes cuff. Morris, Grady and Abby are working on
Joe. Pupils are equal and reactive. He has spontaneous resps. The terrified
nanny is standing by the door answering Abby’s questions. He fell from the
bridge part of the jungle gym….about six feet. The baby moves his foot and Abby
asks him to pen his eyes. She asks the nanny if he moved or cried and the nanny
says no. He has a 3 centimeter lac on his forehead. Grady is draping her with a
lead apron and Chuny is putting one on as well. Abby asks if he fell on head or
his back and the nanny says she didn’t see. Abby tells her it’s her job to watch
him. The nanny apologizes and Abby tells her that she is sorry too and to just
leave. The nanny wants to stay but Abby tells her she will let her know how he
is. Abby is working on him as a machine is beeping and Sam tells her he is going
to get everything. He is getting the best that they’ve got.
Cut to Josh’ room in the ICU. He is in a hurry to leave but
Gates steps up. Tells him not to be in such a hurry. Josh thinks Johns Hopkins
refused him for the study. Gates tells him to relax, he has faxed the consent
forms…but he warned them about Josh. Someone is going to try to win back all the
money Gates has lost. Josh tells him that Texas Hold ‘em isn’t his game. Gates
tells him good news and news….bad is that he can’t go home to pack for
Baltimore. Good news is…that it’s a surprise. His mother is in on it too and
Gates pushes the wheel chair out of the room.
Cut to Pratt and Frank studying the Superbowl ring. Frank
tells him that it’s because of guys like Archibald that there is even an NFL
today. He was lucky to make 35 Gs back then….not like the clowns’ today, half of
them criminals or crybabies. He heard that Ditka himself auctioned off his
championship ring to help out some of these old guys. He asks if he can hold it.
Frank tells Pratt the ring is priceless, earned with sweat and blood on the
gridiron. He can’t sell it. Pratt nods thoughtfully. Javier pulls him away for
two patients and Pratt takes the ring from Frank. He passes Sam in the hall and
asks bout Joe. She tells him that Morris has got it and he woke up a few minutes
ago with purposeful movements.
Sam enters the trauma room and says she brought two gowns in
case he throws up again. Joe is sitting up on the table crying and Abby is on
the phone trying to reach Luka. She is leaving a message about his condition and
tells Luka to call when he gets the message. Chuny tells her its okay, he will
call her back, as Abby hangs up the phone. She approaches the table and asks
Grady what he is doing. Says she will do it. Morris says he knows how to derma
bond a lacteral. Abby tells Morris Grady is an intern and what if it gets
infected or leaves a big scar, does he want to be responsible for that? Grady
says better me than you and Sam agrees. Chuny says they are ready in CT and Abby
says no CT. Abby says they agreed to just observe and Morris says that was
before he vomited. Abby is worried about the long term affects of radiation.
Morris rolls his eyes. Morris insists that because of the vomiting she knows he
needs a scan. She reels off everything they have done and Morris finally says if
this were a patient and not her son, what would she do?
Cut to Gates and Serena walking down a sidewalk with Josh
holding his hands over his eyes. They finally let him take his hands down and he
is looking at a Wrigley Field entrance. Gates shows him tickets for third base
line seats, right behind the on deck circle. Josh is disbelieving and tells him
he can’t afford those tickets on his salary. Gates tells him it’s all about who
you know.
Cut to Abby, Sam and Bettina rolling a gurney with Joe on it
to radiology. Bettina asks about an IV and Abby said he was doing so well they
didn’t think he needed one. Bettina says a little whiff of ketamine will usually
do the trick but Abby doesn’t want him sedated. Bettina says they can’t get a
good look unless he is completely still. Abby wants to try something. She
settles him down on the scanner and pulls a book out of his bag. Joe is whining
and she hands him two small toys to hold. She tells Bettina if it doesn’t work,
then she can sedate him. She sits close to him and Joe is quiet and she flips
through the pages of the book, ‘Daddy Takes a Trip. She reads about ‘me and
uncle Niko…we love the beach.” And ‘this is your dad, missing you and wishing
you were here’. The scanner moves and Joe is still.
Cut to Gates, Josh and Serena sitting behind the Cubs dugout.
Derreck Lee steps out of the dug out and turns to ask if he is Josh. Josh is
dumbstruck. Tony introduces him and Lee shakes their hands. He hands Josh a
baseball signed by the whole team and tells him good luck in Baltimore. As he
turns to leave, Josh calls him back and tells him that statistically his
opponents tend to pitch high and outside to him and with the wind blowing out
today so to lay off that stuff and he will murder them. Lee grins and thanks
him. Josh doesn’t know what to say and Serena says that’s a first!
Abby and Sam are sitting on the floor in radiology. Joe is
playing on the blanket nearby. Abby is trying to reach Luka with her cell phone.
Sam tells her that when she finally reaches him she will have nothing but good
news to tell him. Abby says that she thought NICU was hard but they were at
least together then. He was brand new and she didn’t know him then. But now he
is…Joe. Abby stands up as Bettina turns around from looking at his films and
starts to talk. She tells her that everything with the CT is fine except for a
small area which would probably be fine except that it’s in the area of his
laceration. She says he needs an MRI. Abby sighs and says after all that he
needs to be sedated anyway. Bettina says they need him to be quiet for 45
minutes. Sam tells her they will take him to the ER and let Chuny start the IV
since she is the best stick around. Abby wants LMX cream and Sam says she will
put it on right now and give it time to work.
Cut to Pratt and crew working on a patient from the ambulance
right in the ambulance bay. Chaz’ partner tells him to go refill the airway box.
As Pratt is wheeling the patient in, he hands him off to Grady and sees Chaz
emerging from the ambulance front angrily. He is waving something red at his
partner and asking what it is. Chaz asks what it is and his partner is laughing.
Says he thought he might want to wear them for his boyfriend. Chaz swings and
the partner pushes him off only to be met by Pratt’s fist. Chaz is furious.
Pratt picks up a red bra and Chaz snatches it from him.
Cut back to the trauma room and Joe is screaming on the
gurney. Abby is shaken as Chuny and a male nurse prepare to start an IV. Chuny
promises to be quick and Abby starts to cry. She says she doesn’t think she can
watch. Chuny tells her that she’s not the first mom that can’t watch but Abby
says she doesn’t want to desert him. Sam tells her they can go in the next room
and she will sit with her. Abby kisses Joe and tells him that she loves him. Joe
wails and watches her leave. Abby and Sam pull them selves up to sit on a gurney
and Sam glances at her. Abby is very uncomfortable. She sighs heavily as they
hear Chuny crooning to him. Sam muses and remembers when Alex was three. He was
in a bounce house at the carnival getting knocked around by 5 and 6 year olds.
He kept crying ‘Mommy! Mommy!’. She tried to go in after him but the attendant
thought she was a stupid teenager and wouldn’t let her in. Abby asks what she
did. Sam says she stood on the outside smiling and cheering him on and
encouraging him to get up again and again. She said that it hit her right then.
Kids are going to fall….and all you can do is be there and hope that they keep
getting up. Joe screams again and Abby is miserable.
Pratt comes out of a treatment room with Chaz’ partner. The
guy is saying that e was just playing a joke. Pratt says that jokes are supposed
to be funny. He tells him to come back in a few days and he will check his eye
out. Angie approaches saying that she has empty chairs….Pratt tells her no
thanks and Morris says he is ‘there’ at the end of his shift. She asks Frank if
he wants his eyebrows waxed. Javier tells him she should because he has two
caterpillars over his eyes. A disgruntled Frank says that unlike some…he is not
vain about his appearance. Javier walks away and says that it must make it
easier.
