Neela and Gates
open with a steamy love scene, but Ray who is knocking at her door rudely
awakens her from her euphoric dream. She asks him what he is doing there and
he tells her that she wanted him to look at her TV. He sees that she seems a
little out of it and asks if she is alright. She tells him she is. Luka and
Abby walk back to the hospital with coffees and Luka talks to her about the
case between him and Ames. She tells Luka that he will be fine, and kindly
reminds him that there is a Croatian music festival that she is looking
forward to and that it might take his mind off things. Neela arrives in the ER
and sees Gates, who waves hello. Trying to avoid looking embarrassed, she asks
Frank about the weather and he snidely remarks that Hurricane Up Yours is
about to hit and asks her what she wants. She tells him she is just making
small talk and he asks her why; that is she never interested. She tells him
that she is and questions how is family is. Gates stands nearby, obviously
wanting to have a word, but doesn’t interrupt. While Frank shares the more
undesirable details of how his family is, Neela spots Gates and excuses
herself. Gates asks how she is and if she wants to hook up later and prepare
for the M&M. He tells her he wants to be prepared so he can kick her butt. She
comments that it’s an educational exercise, not Survivor. He asks her what
has her panties in such a bunch and she defensively asks why who’s asking
about her panties. She makes her exit, and Gates asks Frank indirectly why
women are so weird. Frank replies that only Neela is weird. Morris enters
admit asking if anyone is interested in doing a news spot. Kerry says no,
Morris asks Ray and he replies that he’s having a bad hair day. Gates agrees,
but Morris declines. Sam suggests Luka, but Morris comments that the Croatian
doctor is worn out. Morris asks if Sam is interested but she is quick to reply
that no one wants to hear from a nurse. Frank suggests that it be Morris, but
he’s not interested in doing it either. Medics bring in Lou Smith, who’s been
brought in after being clipped by an SUV. As Luka is taking him to a trauma
room, Luka’s lawyer, Angela tells him that the jury has reached a verdict. He
tells her that he is a little busy, but she adds that she told the court they
would be there within the hour. Caught in the middle of calling out his
orders, Angela suggests Kerry take over for him. He tells her that they have
two trauma patients on the way and she states that he needs to be there. She
asks him what he is doing and he tells her that he’s doing his job.

Angela asks Kerry to talk to Luka, and she
promises that Luka will be there. She goes into the trauma room and tells Luka
that he needs to get to the courthouse. He asks her why, and she replies for him
to think about how it reflects on the department if he doesn’t show up to
address the press. Kerry suggests she take over for him and the trauma room goes
dark. Kerry asks Chuny to get maintenance. Kerry retells her story of when she
had a patient she sent home with a runny nose, which turned out to be
meningitis. She tells him that hiding out at work was sending out the wrong
message, and if that’s what he wanted to do. He spots Abby bringing in another
patient and he turns back to Kerry and asks if they will be okay without him. An
Asian lady stops Luka and asks if she knows where Archie is, but Morris whisks
her away. She asks him what she is doing there. While Abby and Greg tend to the
other trauma patient, his cell phone rings and he tells her that it’s his wife.
She has Haleh put the cell on speakerphone and Abby starts telling his wife
where and what is wrong with her husband. Sam introduces Dawn, a new nurse who
transferred from New Orleans. Ray, Katey and Neela all introduce themselves.
Gates asks Neela to come over and look at his patient, but Ray is quick to tell
him that she is busy. Neela goes over anyways, and meets his patient. It is
apparent that Gates only wanted Neela’s attention. Looking bewildered, Katey
alerts Ray back to their patient. Ray calls Neela back over, while Gates asks if
someone can take his patient for x-rays. Sam volunteers Dawn. After Josie makes
a comment, Gates tells the new nurse that she is special needs. Angela meets
Luka outside the courthouse, and they go inside. After stabilizing Abby’s
patient, Neela presents the case to Crenshaw. He tells her that once the patient
is prepped, he wants her back downstairs in the ER for consults. She makes it
known that she wants to scrub in and he tells her that is up to the discretion
of the Chief Resident, which is him. He tells her no. Katey and Ray leave and
discuss Neela, and if the reason he hasn’t called her is because of Neela. Ray
makes excuses, while Katey tells him it’s okay. Kerry passes by and tells Ray to
move onto another patient. Maintenance suggests they close one of the trauma
rooms, but Kerry is adamant that they can’t. In the other room, Morris is almost
caught with the Asian women from earlier. Kerry spots him laughing, but looks
away. Morris quickly covers her and makes it look as if he is pondering
something over Benny the Bum. Kerry asks why it was funny, and Morris states
Benny was talking in his sleep. Kerry’s attention is drawn to something moving
under a blanket. She decides she doesn’t want to find out and leaves. Morris
tells the Asian lady everything is clear and she surfaces ungracefully. It comes
to light that she is a manicurist. Gates reviews Josie’s films and orders pain
medication. They pull the curtain to find Josie completely naked and wishing
them a Happy Birthday. Back in court, Luka and Curtis wait for the verdict. The
judge reads that the jury favored Luka, and Curtis looks stunned.

Neela retells her course of action to
Dubenko, who is scrubbing in. She asks if they need some help and he asks her if
there wasn’t something else she should be doing. Neela states no, not unless he
required her assistance. He tells her she can scrub in. Gates presents Josie’s
case to Kerry, and states that he would like to put her on birth control since
the disorder Josie has often finds the patients being more sexually forward.
Kerry declines, stating that might be too proactive. Kerry is distracted by
Morris wheeling a patient past them, but turns back to Gates. She tells him that
he needs to check with her before doing anything. Abby’s attempts at getting a
surgical consult finally come through when Crenshaw finds out that Neela is up
in surgery. Ray watches on as Hope gives Lou sutures. Someone from radiology
comes down to bring attention to Lou’s head CT films. They find a tumor and
wonder if that was the reason for his accident. Mrs. Palsy comes in with her
daughter to find out more about her husband, Garrett. As Neela and Dubenko work
on Garrett, Crenshaw steps into the OR. He goes on to ask Neela why she is there
and not down in the ER doing what he instructed her to do. Dubenko tells her he
was unaware of her having other responsibilities. Garrett’s vitals drop and
Dubenko begins sticking up for Neela. Abby takes Mrs. Palsy and her daughter up
to surgery, while Frank notices Luka returning from court. Everyone
congratulates him, but Ray alerts Luka to Lou’s films. Lou’s wife asks him if
the cancer has spread, and Luka tells her it has. Kerry finally busts Morris who
has been trying to get ready for the local news spot he was elected for at the
beginning of the episode. Kerry demands everyone get out. Gates talks to the
parents of Josie about birth control. Neela thanks Dubenko for allowing her to
scrub in. She goes on to explain herself, but Dubenko interrupts her to tell her
that Crenshaw is her superior and she has to listen to his orders. He warns her
that if she does it again, she will be let go from the surgical rotation. Neela
goes to talk to Garrett’s wife, but finds it almost difficult to relate that her
husband did not make it. Once Mrs. Palsy heard the news, she collapsed.

Trying to get Mrs. Palsy revived, Neela
asks the daughter if her mother suffers from a heart condition. The daughter
states that she doesn’t, but Neela feels that Mrs. Palsy is going through a
massive MI. After shocking, Neela states that Mrs. Palsy is going through broken
heart syndrome. Gates tells Josie they are going to give her a shot. She tells
them she doesn’t like shots, and changes the subject. Kerry and Dawn tend to
another patient coming off a rig while Morris does his news spot. Kerry asks
them to get out of the way, but the news reporters approach her for the spot
instead of Morris. Abby shocks Mrs. Palsy again, but calls a systole. Neela
continues while Greg orders another round of epi. Greg asks Neela to stop
compressions but she continues until Greg stops her. A faint blip sounds from
the monitor to indicate she had a pulse. A nurse pushes Lou passed admit, and
Ray looks at Luka asking if he signed him out. Luka says no and goes to find out
what the deal is. Lou goes on to say that they have a great team there and Lou’s
wife pulls Luka off to the side. Luka asks her why she didn’t tell her husband
that the cancer was back and that he didn’t like lying to patients. She tells
him that when her husband was first diagnosed, he shut down. She goes on to tell
Luka that he’s better and is living more vicariously. Curtis walks in behind
Luka while Lou’s wife is still talking and interrupts. He asks Ray to take them
back to a room and gives her a second chance to tell Lou about the cancer. He
goes to Curtis who says Luka was celebrating in court. Luka was quick to defend
himself by saying they were just happy that everything was over. Curtis accuses
Luka of getting what he wanted. Luka tries to excuse himself but Curtis follows
him into admit. Greg asks if Luka needs help but Luka motions he’s okay. Tension
mounts as Curtis becomes increasingly agitated. Kerry calls over security, and
as they physically pull Curtis out, Luka asks him what he wants. Curtis tells
Luka he just wants his life back.

Luka tracks down Curtis as he is walking along the bridge.
Luka comments that he just wanted to make sure he was okay, but Curtis is quick
to admit that he is not. Curtis tells Luka that in court, he told his kids that
justice would prevail, but that he didn’t think that was the case at all. Curtis
asks Luka to answer one question; did he think Luka gave him the best possible
care. Luka answers by saying that he is in charge of forty acute care patients
every day and not only he, but every other doctor does the best they can. He
adds that doctors are not Gods. Curtis describes how he lost his family, and
that the court case that Curtis was trying to win was too much on his wife. Luka
suggests there are support groups, but Curtis says all he wants is his old life
back. Luka’s pager goes off, but before he leaves, he tells Curtis that if he
needs anything to call him. Neela and Gates review the M&M exercise in the
lounge. Neela tells Gates to share his, but he stalls. She steals his cue cards
and he admits that he is dyslexic, after she struggles with understanding what
is written on the cards. Sam and Katy barge in and ask Neela if she’s in for the
girls night out. She tries to back out but Gates tells her that she should go
and abruptly leaves. Abby and Luka talk about his run in with Curtis, but Ray
interrupts saying that Lou’s wife still has not told her husband about his
cancer. Luka enters Lou’s room and begins to tell Lou about their findings on
his head CT, but decides to respect Lou’s wife and not tell him either. Greg and
his date, which is the same doctor that spotted Lou’s findings, are toasting to
daily ER life. A knock at his door interrupts them, and it’s his brother, Chaz.
The girls are sitting around the table playing a truth or dare sort of game. Sam
admits that she would ‘shag’ Pratt, and Haleh comments she knew Sam had the
fever. Everyone spots Kerry on TV, and moves in closer. Neela remains at the
table and Abby sees her friend sitting alone and goes to sit with her. She asks
if Neela is okay and she replies that she’s had a bad day. Neela confesses her
dreams involving Gates, and Abby takes it in stride. Abby tells Neela that she
can’t mourn over Gallant forever and that she’s human. Abby then asks the girls
at the bar to set ‘her friend up with some tequila’. Meg arrives at Gates’ and
shares with him some school news about her daughter Sara. Neela slams back
tequila shots and gets egged on to call Gates. Although no one knows its Gates,
they begin to speculate. Gates and Meg reminisce about their friend and Sara’s
father, when he gets called away to fix Sara’s computer. Gates phone rings and
Meg answers it. Neela asks to speak to Tony, but Meg leads Neela to believe that
he is ‘busy’. Neela hangs up quickly, and says it was a wrong number. Sam
guesses its Tony and the girl’s hoot and holler. Neela tries to keep a smile on
her face, but it’s evident that she is a little disappointed that Gates was
flirting with her.
