The episode starts out with all the interns walking
behind Pratt and Luka, they're getting their instructions for the day. As they
reach the desk, Luka informs Pratt, Weaver will be on at 12, and Chuny comes
by telling Morris will be late.
Cut to Morris in his car, loudly singing along with the song he has on his
radio.
Cut back to the ER, Luka is preparing the board for rounds as Neela walks by
as she has forgotten her voucher. As she walks along, a woman is yelling at
Chuny, calling her J Lo. Ray walks up to Neela, telling her something about
the wiring and the shootout and wishing her good luck.
Paramedics bring in James Anderson, history of congestive heart failure. Gates
walks with the paramedics and guide the to Trauma 1. The paramedic Gates was
with in the previous episode is giving Gates the information he needs as
everyone lift James over to the other bed on Sam's count. The paramedics leave
and James waked up. Gates walks after one of the paramedics and asks him where
his sense of humor is, the paramedic tells him he doesn't need Gates "playing"
him in the ER just because they gave him a white coat, this is obviously a
reference to the previous episode where Gates did a procedure that didn't work
out well. As the paramedic is yelling at Gates the whole ER is watching. As
the paramedic walks out he calls Gates a killer, and Gates tries to explain he
didn't actually mean killer. He walks away but trips over something on the
floor.
Cut to a dressing room, a man is putting on make up but as he hears his
neighbor is on the phone, with something about a man called Jim, he stops. The
man, supposedly called Ben walks into the ER, and goes to the security guy, he
tells Ben he needs to be at the triage desk, so he goes there. Haleh sits
there already handing him the form to fill in if he is a patient, but he
explains that he's here to see someone, and Haleh hands him an other form.
At the desk Pratt gives a new intern named Hope a chart for a little girl that
fell of her bike, Pratt also hands Ray a transport beeper and explains to him
what the meaning of it is, Ray walks away and another woman walks up to Pratt
looking for Luka. Pratt tries to somewhat hit on her but Luka comes to rescue
soon and the woman, named Angela asks if Luka has a minute.
Then Haleh walks up to Pratt and introduces Timmy Rawlins, telling him he will
be filling in for Jerry.
Angela tells Luka something about a case in mid-February of 2004, then Timmy
comes in and they have a small conversation then Angels turns back to Luka
again and comforts him with the case.
Cut to Gates and Sam talking about patients discharging. Sam compliments Gates
but Pratt doesn't agree and they have a small discussion about the man named
James. The man that we've seen earlier in this episode comes to the desk along
with Haleh, he's looking for James Anderson. Gates walks with the man to the
room where James is in.
Neela and Dubenko walk down the hall as Dubenko is explaining about Rounds. He
introduces the fellow interns and the new Chief-Resident, Dr. Crenshaw. Dr.
Crenshaw makes some rude remarks to Neela as she tells him she's from the ER.
Gates walks into the room and asks Bennet if there is any family he should
contact about James, Bennet says no. James wakes up and Gates leaves them to
talk. Sam walks up to Luka outside the hospital and tells him about a patient,
she starts about the baby and then starts about that they need to talk about
what happened. Luka tells Sam that if it wasn't for her he'd be dead. He asks
how Sam is doing and how Alex is doing. An ambulance arrives and Sam walks
over to the ambulance.
Hope comes up to the desk telling about an immigrated woman she's been
treating. Sam comes in with a patient who is refusing to stay in bed, the
woman that called Chuny J Lo starts making pictures. Gates checks in on James,
he says he's feeling better. Gates explains he has some test results and tells
him he has to be on dialysis because his kidneys aren't working anymore, James
refuses. James eventually agrees with Gates and Bennet, but asks Bennet to
call his family. Sam comes in and asks if their going for dialysis, and makes
the call when Gates confirms. Bennet starts telling about James' family
history. And Sam tells dialysis can start here as they don't have a bed
upstairs. Pratt starts talking to Gates and takes him outside of the room,
Kerry walks up to Pratt and Hope does too. Pratt is happy to see Kerry and
they have a small conversation. Someone who is familiar to Tony gets brought
into the ER, but the patient doesn't get assigned to Hope, not to Gates. Sam
brings James' family to James and Bennet introduces himself. James isn't doing
good and his heart is getting worse. There are some questions about a DNR and
the family of James obviously doesn't want to go further, but Bennett does.
Pratt discovers Gates hasn't filled in a chart. for James. Kerry is walking
with Hope and asks Haleh for some meds, but discovers that there have been a
lot of changes in the ER.
Cut to James, he's crashing, they find out what kind of meds James has been
taking, and in combination with the calcium Pratt has been giving him, it was
enough to make James' heart stop. Bennett and James family wants to know what
is going on. Gates wants digibyne, but the family has decided to let it be,
and let James go. Bennett is against that. Gates explains about digibyne but
James has been in cardiac arrest for too long now. Gates comes after Pratt as
he leaves and Pratt forbids Gates to try and save James. But Gates is stubborn
and does give the digibyne.
Hope is examining a patient with Weaver, Weaver says she will be right back
and we see Morris, Timmy and Ray stare at Hope. Ray asks how hope is doing and
Kerry answers she is very devoted. Kerry is looking for something and Morris
tells her she needs a key to get that and only attendings can get that key.
Kerry rips of the key and tells Morris she IS an attending. Timmy asks Morris
if there is a rule about Desk clerks dating interns. Morris tells him to shut
up and calls him "not-Jerry". Ray's pager goes off and goes upstairs.
Cut back to Gates and Sam trying to help James. They got him back for now.
Haleh opens the door and tells Bennett there are 2 friends of his outside.
James' finally gets to know the real James, and Bennett and James' brother
argue about this. Gates gets called away to the guy that seemed to be a friend
of him. Cut to the park where Abby is sitting on a bench with Joe. Morris and
Neela come up to see how they're doing. Morris picks up Joe and he spits up on
him. Morris walks away with Joe while Neela and Abby talk for a while. Morris
comes back with Joe because he starts to cry. Morris suggests that he may be
hungry. Neela's pager goes off and she needs to get back to the
hospital. Morris stays for a few seconds but as Abby makes a remark he leaves
too.
Cut back to Gates' friend, who is supposedly called Q-ball. Hope, Gates and
Kerry are working on him. Crenshaw and Neela come in to examine him and see if
he needs surgery. Neela tries to examine the patient but Crenshaw doesn't let
her. Pratt comes up to Sam and asks her something about Hope. Sam also tells
Pratt something about the digibyne given to James. Pratt walks away angry.
Pratt rushes into one of the trauma rooms and Gates and Pratt start yelling at
each other. Pratt comes into the doctor's lounge and Gates admits he was
wrong.
Neela and Dubenko discuss the way Crenshaw is treating the interns. Gates
checks back with James and his friends. Bennett comes outside and Gates and
Bennett talk for a while, Bennett asks Gates if he knows if James will ever
come out of this. Gates apologizes but Bennett understands. He tells
something, and Gates tells him he makes him wish he was a drag queen. Bennett
smiles, Bennett goes back to back inside.
Cut to the desk and Morris tells Hope what she should do
and tries to ask her out. Neela and Gates discuss their days, and say
goodnight. Sam comes into Alex' room and they talk for a while, Alex tells her
he has seen what Sam has done. Gates opens the door to his apartment and
greets the people he lives with. We see Bennett dress and sing a song,
Neela looks at some pictures of her and Gallant, and James' nephew sits by his
bed. We see Gates kissing the woman that opened the door to the apartment.
