Sam and Alex are driving down the
road and Sam is really out of it. She is deep in thought and traumatized
and barely misses hitting a huge transfer truck carrying a load of cars.
"I'm losing it. I can't even drive. You're the only person I can
think of to call", she tells the person on a pay phone. She also tries
to tell the person her location. She asks them to hurry up. She
looks on at Alex in the car, who is also pretty traumatized.
Back at the hospital, Dr. Raab is
speaking with Luka and Abby and tells them that premature babies are
susceptible to five conditions. These are
infection, hypotension, hypoglycemia, tachopea and cyanosis and their baby has
four out of the five problems that preemies experience. Abby is
concerned about her new baby boy. Abby worked with Dr. Raab during her
rotation and seems to know a lot about how the NICU runs and operates.
When Dr. Raab asks her if she has any questions, Abby replies, "No, I've been
here before". Luka tries to get Abby to go back to her room and rest,
but she tells him no. "I've given that watch and wait speech about a
hundred times and never realized what a load of crap it is", she tells him.
Abby tells Luka that she can't see her baby's eyes and he smiles and tells her
that they are blue. Luka tells her that Neela wants to come and visit,
but Abby tells him that she doesn't want any visitors. A shrill voice
calls out, "Abby, Abby, Abby, oh thank God, oh I came as soon as I heard".
Abby sees that her mom has arrived.

Sam's friend Richard Elliott has
arrived to where Sam and Alex are. She has told him what happened and
she is worried that she is going to go to jail. "He's better off dead",
he tells her. He tells her that she needs to fill out a rape report and
tell the cops that she shot him in self defense. Sam tells him that she
came back to the spot to kill him and he tells her that she doesn't need to
mention that again and that only the two of them know the truth. Alex is
watching on in the rearview mirror of the vehicle.
Back at the ER, Ray asks Kerry if
there is any word on Sam. She tells him that the police are still
looking for them. Frank asks Kerry if she wants the walls painted
eggshell or white. "Do I look like Martha Stewart? I'm the Chief
of Staff; I've got real work to do.", she replies. Pratt and Ray
discuss a patient and then Pratt goes in to check on Neela, who has been
napping in an exam room. She asks him what time it is and he tells her
that it is time for her to go home. She has been there all night.
She wants to go up and check on Abby. He tells her that Gallant's
parents probably want to see her today. She tells him that she is not
going over there. Pratt tells her to go home and then walks out.
Back in the NICU, an attending is
going over the results of a test on the baby. They think that there may
be a heart murmur. Maggie wants him to translate what he says into
English and she is trying to write it all down. Abby tells her that she
will explain it all to her later. Dr. Raab tells Maggie that Abby was
one of her star students. Maggie tells her that Abby never gives herself
enough credit. "The good ones never do", Dr. Raab replies. As
Maggie watches the sonogram with the babies heart, Luka bends over and tells
Abby that he didn't tell Maggie to come. Abby says that it is okay; she
seems to be on her meds. Neela has shown up to visit with Abby.
Abby introduces Maggie to Neela. The baby's heart has blood flowing in
the wrong direction and Maggie tells them to fix it. Abby tells her mom
that the baby is premature and that they will have to wait for several weeks.
Maggie agrees and says that they can wait.
Paramedic Tony Gates has arrived at
the ER with a thirty-nine year old patient named James Clivus. The
patient is all wrapped up in aluminum foil and is brought in after falling
twenty feet from a cell phone tower. Kerry and Pratt carry the patient
in and Tony sees "Mayday" , which is the nickname he gave Neela, leaving the
ER. He tells her that he heard about what happened in the ER yesterday
and is glad to see that she is okay. She replies, "Yeah" and keeps
walking. Tony asks Pratt what is wrong with Neela and he tells her that
her husband was killed in Iraq. "Are you kidding me", he asks. And
Kerry replies, "Do you think we would joke about that"? Pratt sees that
Sam has arrived and Kerry goes to see about her. Kerry is very maternal
and asks if she is alright and gives her a hug. She tells Kerry that a
friend dropped her off and that she needs a rape exam. Kerry hugs her
again and holds her.
In the NICU, a resident is putting a
pic line into baby Joe to give him nutrition and medicine without having to
stick him each time. Maggie thinks that Dr. Raab should be doing it and
Luka tells her that he is not a student and that he knows what he is doing.
An alarm starts to sound and Maggie seems concerned. The resident has
"tickled" the heart with the catheter line, but Abby learns that the pulled
the line back as they should. Maggie is writing everything down, so that
she can look it all up later. Maggie mentions that she has been reading
about smoking and prematurity and Abby quickly takes offense. She
reminds Maggie that she quit smoking years ago. Abby feels as if Maggie
is blaming her for Joe's prematurity and Luka reminds Maggie that Abby had
fallen during the gunfire in the ER. A lactation consultant comes in to
tell Abby that they are starting a lactation class and asks if she would like
to attend. Abby thinks that it is a good idea and Maggie agrees to
attend with her. Luka walks up to baby Joe and caresses his hand with
his fingers and speaks Croatian to him.
Abby
seems frustrated to have Maggie with her in her class. Abby wants some
privacy and the nurse offers to bring her a screen. Abby tells Maggie
that she wants her to step out. Maggie reminds Abby that she has been
through this before. Abby quickly corrects her, "Have you had a
c-section, hysterectomy and a premature baby?" Abby tells her that she
will meet her outside and Maggie finally gives up and leaves the room.
"Did they have a boy or a girl?", Sam
asks Kerry as she and Haleh are doing the rape exam. Kerry tells her
that it was a boy. She then asks about Jerry and Kerry tells her that he
had been shot through the chest, but he is pulling through. Kerry asks
Haleh to send off for an HIV and hepatitis tests and Haleh asks Sam if she can
get her some water. Sam feels to blame for what Steve did. She
knew that he stole TV's and VCR's and things, but never thought that he would
be capable of doing what he did. Kerry asks her if she knows where Steve
and the rest are and Sam tells her that they are all dead.

One Week Later:
Paramedics Gates and Zadro are out in
the rain working on a patient who has had a drug overdose. Zadro sees
Gates doing procedures that are not normally done in the field, but Gates
doesn't seem to care. He told Zadro that he had just spent a week in the
ICU. Gates calls Pratt on the radio requesting permission to do a
procedure and Pratt tells him no. Gates does the procedure anyway and
tells Zadro that Pratt said that it is okay. Luka is back to work and
sees a lot of patients on the board. Frank tells him that the people
will do anything to get out of the rain.
Luka
has gone up to the NICU to check on his boy. Maggie tells him that he is
hanging in there and that she has been reading to him all morning. "I
swear to you that he recognizes my voice", she tells him. They are
having a hard time weaning Joe off of the ventilator. Dr. Raab sees Luka
and tells him to remove his lab coat. She doesn't want any of the ER
germs getting into her NICU. She then asks them if they decided on the
Fludrozalone trials she had talked to them about,
but they both have a different opinion about it. They have to explain to
Maggie what it is all about. Abby doesn't want them to experiment with
trials on her son, but Luka feels that it may be the best chance for him.
Abby feels that Dr. Raab is has been pushing the trials too much on them.
Luka gets frustrated and leaves and Maggie seems to think that Luka is right.
"Shut up, shut up, Please, please, just shut up",
Abby tells Maggie. Maggie hushes and Abby continues, "I didn't ask you
to come here,. I didn't ask you to be involved. Maybe you should
just leave." Maggie replies, "Okay". and doesn't say anymore. Abby
walks out of the NICU and leaves Maggie standing alone.
Pratt, Dori and Sam are gathered
around the admit. desk doing paperwork and Morris comes in. He is now
working for a pharmaceutical company and is well dressed. He tells them
that he is going to be going to Vegas. Morris asks Pratt if he needs any
help and Pratt tells him that he has everything handled. Morris tells
him not just today, he wants his job back. He asks where Weaver is
because she has been ignoring all of his calls. Pratt tells him that she
has been busy with administrative stuff. Gates and Zadro have arrived
with the nineteen-year-old male they found out in an alley in the rain.
Pratt learns that Gates did the procedure in the field that he told him not to
do. Zadro tells Gates that he is dead. Pratt tells him that he
should be reported.
Dr. Weaver is in an administrative
meeting with Dr. Anspaugh and several others. Dr. Anspaugh is discussing
all that happened during the time that Dr. Clemente was in the ER.
Anspaugh blames Dr. Kovac for everything and has already written a press
release explaining Dr. Kovac's dismissal. Everybody wants Kovac gone
except for Kerry. Kerry tells them that Kovac was not to blame and goes
on to tell them, “That’s not how it happened.”
Dr. Weaver arrives down in the ER to have Morris beg her for his job back.
She tells him continuously, "Not now". Morris gets on his knees and begs
for his job and she tells him to get up and that he is embarrassing himself.
"I cannot rehire you because I am no longer Chief of Staff", she tells him.
Morris looks up at her shocked and she walks off.
Dr. Kovac, Pratt, Gates and Sam are
working on the young man that was brought in. They do not think that it
was a drug overdose now. Luka and Pratt disagree about the treatment and
Gates chimes in with his opinion. After Gates administers some
medication that he had researched, the young man starts to get better.
Luka leaves the room and Morris tells him that he needs to speak with him.
Morris tells him that he needs his job back and Luka tells him later as he
goes upstairs to speak with Abby.
Maggie brings Abby some coffee.
Maggie tells Abby a story about when Eric was a baby and had
pneumonia. He was in the NICU and his kidneys were
shutting down and they did not expect him to survive. Abby's father
wanted the family to say goodbye, but Maggie was not ready to give him up.
Abby tells Maggie that she is not like her, but Maggie disagrees. Abby
needs to find the strength to get through this so that they can take Joe home.
Abby doesn't feel that she has the strength, but
Maggie tells her, "Oh Abby, you've spent your whole life getting strong enough
to do this." Luka walks up and tells Abby that he knows the trial scares
her and that it scares him also, but to trust him on this. He tells her
that sometimes the long shot works. Abby wonders what if something goes
wrongs and Maggie quickly replies, "What if it goes right"? "You can't
take it back", she replies. Luka tells her that he knows that and Abby
finally tells him, "Okay, let's do it. I hope you're right". Abby
walks off and Maggie goes off behind her leaving Luka there to think about
their decision.

One Week Later:
Baby Joe seems to be doing
very well after the trial and is ready to come off of the antibiotics.
Dr. Raab seems really positive about his improvements. Maggie comes in
and tells Abby to get a life. She wants Luka and Abby to leave the room
for a while and get a break. She tells them that she can stay and watch
about Joe while they take a break. She has brought a sign that reads,
"QUIET PLEASE I'M TRYING TO SLEEP!". Abby laughs and tells her that it
is obnoxious. "The nurses keep yakking", she replies. Abby and
Luka are walking out of the NICU and the nurses are concerned about them
leaving Maggie with them.
Sam and
Richard Elliott are meeting with the prosecutor who is
trying to figure out what happened with Steve. He is finding Sam's story
hard to believe. Mr. Elliott tells the prosecutor that his boss will be
having a steak and Martini later with him and they can discuss it further at
that time. Mr. Elliott reminds him that Steve raped Sam and shot up the
hospital and deserved what he got.
Luka and Abby are outside sitting and
discussing some things that need to be taken care of at Luka's apartment.
Neela walks up and is on her way out from work. She seems really tired
and is going to grab something to eat at Ike's and go home to crash.
Abby asks Luka how she is doing back at work and he tells her that she seems
to be doing okay. Neela is still staying at Abby's apartment and Abby
thinks that it may be time to give the apartment up.
Luka tells her she doesn’t have to make any decisions
right now and Abby replies, ‘I know, but we’re a family and we can’t just keep
having slumber parties.” Luka hesitates and asks Abby if she has given
any thought to what he asked her earlier. "I have and I haven't", she
replies. He tells her that it is okay, he will convince her later.
Abby reminds him, “You know, we have a great life together. I don’t need a
ring or a white dress to prove that I love you.” Luka smiles and
turns toward her and says, “I’ll take love and then save marriage for later.”
Luka leans back in his chair and says, “I hope she’s okay.” Abby
replies, "Who? Neela?” Luka responds, "The NICU nurse. Your mother
was driving her crazy.” Luka looks at Abby and chuckles.
Maggie is sitting in a rocking chair
next to baby Joe and working on some sort of knitting. The alarm starts
to beep and she quickly gets up to call attention to the baby, but none of the
nurses seem to be concerned. A NICU nurse comes over and turns the
beeping off and Maggie tells her that he didn't even check the baby.
Maggie sits back down and another alarm goes off. Maggie looks at baby
Joe and then goes to tell the nurses that something is wrong and that Dr. Raab
needs to come and take a look. "If you overreact to every blip and bleep
in this place you'll make yourself crazy", the nurse tells her. "Page
Dr. Raab. Why isn't anybody in this place listening to me. Page
Dr. Raab, page Dr. Raab, page Dr. Raab!", Maggie continues. She tells
the nurses that Joe's belly is too big and that his breathing is too fast.
The nurse tries to tell Maggie to calm down, but Maggie quickly replies,
"Don't you dare tell me to calm down. I don't care what Dr. Raab is
doing; she needs to get down hear and take care of my grandson now!"
Abby and Luka have arrived and Maggie tells them thank God they are back, they
are putting the tube back in Joe. Abby asks Dr. Raab what happened and
Maggie tells her that she knew something was wrong, but no one would listen.
The baby's abdomen has perfed and he will need surgery. Abby blames this
on the drug trial, but Dr. Raab tells her that this can happen to premature
babies. Dr. Albright has come to take the baby to surgery with Dr.
Anspaugh. Maggie insists that they not have a resident work or cut on
her grandson. Abby wants them to call the chaplain, so that the baby can
be baptized per Luka's request.
Neela is sitting in a bar with two
guys and is drinking shots. The two guys are trying to get Neela to let
them take her home. Gates walks up and tells the guys that he will take
care of Neela and they get upset. Gates ends up beating them up after
one of them calls Neela a name. Zadro has to come and pull Gates off of
them.
Dr. Anspaugh and Albright work on the
baby as Luka watches on and the chaplain baptizes him. Abby watches from
the observation window. Gates has arrived at Neela's place. She
offers him a beer, but he declines. She tells him that he has a mean
left hook. She likes that in a man. She stumbles and tries to
dance and Gates has to stop her from making a fool of herself. She
kisses him and he pulls her away after a while. She doesn't want to be
alone she tells him. He offers to call someone for her, but she tells
him that there is anyone. Gates pulls her close and holds her and
caresses her head. Maggie comes in to where Abby is watching the
surgery. Abby is having a hard time staying positive about the outcome.
Maggie tells her to stop being negative. She has to be positive at times
like these. Abby blames Maggie for her negativity for the way she was
raised. Maggie agrees that Abby did not have a good home life growing
up, but now Abby is the momma and she has to stay positive for the baby.
Abby begins to sob as she sees Luka sobbing in the OR. Abby reaches over
and turns the voice monitor off, so that she can no longer hear what is going
on in the OR. Abby begins to say, "I’m trying, I'm really, really
trying, I'm trying,." Maggie reaches out to Abby's hand and pulls her
over next to her and embraces her as she cries.

Two Weeks Later:
Neela is outside of the ER and has
her sunglasses on and is resting when Ray walks up. He is on his way out
to get beer for a graduation party that they are having later. He
mentions that Weaver had been demoted because of the Clemente ordeal and that
they thought Luka was going to catch the flack for all of that, but apparently
Weaver did the right thing. Ray asks her if she has talked to Abby and
she tells her that she thinks they want some privacy for a while. Ray
replies, "tell her we miss her, okay" and then he walks away. Neela
walks back into the ER and Frank is discussing the streaks of paint that he
notices with the contractor. Neela agrees with Frank about the streaks.
"Hi mayday", Gates says to Neela as she walks up. She tells him that she
is embarrassed about what had happened and he tells her that he is glad that
he was able to take her home. Pratt walks in with a class of new
interns. Neela wouldn't wish that on anyone she tells Gates. Neela
learns that Gates is a new intern. He tells her that he looks forward
working under her. Sam asks if anyone has heard from Jerry. He is
suppose to be discharged today. Frank tells her that he had just spoken
to him and that he is getting a massage from a home care nurse. "You're
big daddy called and he wants you to meet him outside", he tells her.
Morris is still frustrated with his job and speaks with Pratt about the good
times he had working in the ER. Morris wants to practice medicine again.
Morris has to leave to speak with the critical care department. Pratt
asks Frank if he knows where Kovac is?
Outside, Sam speaks with Richard who tells her that it is
all over now. The shooting has been determined to be a homicide and she
will not be charged. She is relieved and gives him a hug and thanks him.
He tells her that she is a good mom and to take care of Alex. Morris
speaks with the critical care department about the drug he is selling.
They are giving him a hard time and Pratt walks up and pulls him out to tell
him that Kovac is going to offer him the job. Morris hugs him and is
relieved to be done with his sales job.
Neela and Ray are outside on a balcony where the party is
at and they are discussing how great it is that Kovac offered Morris that
attending spot. "Morris is like a stray dog, he just keeps coming back",
he jokingly replies. Gates comes up excited about a procedure he has
performed and interrupts. Neela introduces the two of them. Neela
walks off to leave the two of them to talk. Tony
tells Ray, "You know, I hear she had a roommate, he never tried to sleep with
her." Ray makes a face and a grunting noise and replies as he walks
away, "What a dill weed".
"So, can I call you Kerry now"?, Morris asks Weaver as they
have a drink together. "I don't think so", she replies. "Why,
we're colleagues, we're contemporaries", he replies as he puts
his arm around her shoulder. "No touch, no touch", she tells him and he
removes his arm. She sees Luka and calls him over to where they are at.
He apologizes for being late. He says that he had to see it for him
self. "Archie Morris and Greg Pratt, Attendings huh". Neela asks
him if Abby is coming and he tells her that she wanted to, but not tonight.
Kerry asks him how she is holding up and he tells her that she is okay.
Back in the baby's nursery we see an empty crib and the
back of Abby who is sitting in a rocking chair. Maggie walks in and we
see that Abby is holding baby Joe. Maggie has called a cab and she is
getting ready to leave. Abby asks her when she will be coming back and
Maggie seems to be happy for the invitation. Abby reminds her that the
note taking and everything was a little crazy, but she doesn't think that she
could have made it through everything without her. Maggie reminds her
that she has always been a fighter and would have been fine without her being
there. She tells her that she told her to be a lawyer and she became a
doctor. "My greatest hope would be this little guy causes you as much
agony and pain as you caused me", Maggie tells her as she bends down to kiss
her grandson on the forehead. "It'll serve you right". The cab's
horn blows and Abby tells her that she doesn't have to go today and Maggie
tells her that she will be fine. Abby starts to tell her something and
Maggie turns and tells Abby that she loves her. Maggie blows them a kiss
and walks away. Luka shares photos of his pride and joy with the group
at the party and Abby continues to hold baby Joe in her arms.
