Luka is taking down the decorations from the Christmas
tree. Abby comes in and asks what he is doing. Luka replies that Christmas was
two weeks ago and he thinks that it is time to put it away. Abby asks him to
leave it because she likes it and Luka smiles and teases her about being one
of those people who have to drag a dead, brown tree to the street in April.
Abby likes those people because they don’t give up easily. She reaches out to
take the ornament that Luka has just taken down, it is a picture of her when
she was young. She explains that she gave it to Maggie when she was six while
they were living in a motel. The tea pot starts to whistle in the other room
and Abby gets up to get it, asking Luka if he has a meeting to go to. He says
he can skip it so they can talk, but Abby has to go to work soon.
Luka walks into the kitchen behind Abby as she pulls down a
box of tea. Abby doesn’t want to talk and Luka asks her if she has made a
decision yet. Abby looks frustrated and turns to face him, reminding him that
they don’t know what they are to each other. Luka says that no one ever knows
that, but Abby isn’t buying it. “We’re friends…good friends.” Luka tells her,
and Abby says that the fact that they’d been through a lot together doesn’t
mean that they could take care of a child. Luka tells her that he knows it has
to be her choice. She looks at him sadly.
In the ER, Neela is wheeling Kerry in on a stretcher. She
fell on the ice in the ambulance bay and is complaining of right hip pain and
can’t bear weight. Kerry tells her to stop saying that. Neela is just trying
to be professional, Kerry tells her it is annoying. Kerry wants to know who’s
job it is to de-ice the ambulance bay. No one says anything. Kerry tells
everyone that she is only a little bruised and that everyone needs to get back
to work. Neela goes to find a bed and Morris, Chuny, and Malik immediately
accost Kerry with questions and charts to sign off on. Kerry tells them she
isn’t on today. Ray intervenes gallantly and tells everyone that she had a
nasty fall on the ice and they need to give her some space. Everyone leaves.
Kerry looks skeptical and asks Ray what he wants. He says he needs a few weeks
off because his band got a recording deal in L.A. Kerry looks at him blankly
for a second before pressing her crutch against his chest, telling him to back
away from the gurney and threatening to impale him. He tries to ask again and
she replies coldly, “Back off, Elvis”.
Jodie and Clemente are out to breakfast. Jodie is
complaining that the salt for the ice is ruining her shoes. Vic tells her that
New York has been snow-free all year and suggests she goes back there. Jodie
ignores him and complains that they are Jimmy Choo’s. Clemente is confused and
wants to know who that is and why she is wearing his shoes. Jodie looks at
him, annoyed, and tells him that they cost her $400. Surprised, Vic tells her
that she shouldn’t be paying more for shoes than some people pay for rent, and
that it is January in Chicago; she should get some boots. Looking at him
disdainfully, Jodie tells him he is not a morning person. Vic agrees and
orders another coffee. He then tells her that she is obviously not prepared
for winter. “So?” she replies. Vic leans forward and tells her that she should
stay at his place tonight. Jodie smiles, that is obviously what she wanted to
hear. She laughs and tells him that she wants to see Michigan Ave. Vic leans
back again and tells her not to buy anything. She can shop if she wants to,
but Clemente wants to know who’s credit card she will be using. Jodie rolls
her eyes. She has severed all ties with Bobby. Clemente is not so sure. “That
doesn’t mean he’s severed all ties with you.” She tells him Bobby has no idea
where she is, and he doesn’t know where Vic is either. Clemente reminds her
that it wouldn’t be that hard to find out for a cop. He tells her she is being
stupid. Jodie gets up, angry, and demands money for a cab. Then she tells
Clemente that he should meditate or do Pilates because he is getting ugly in
the metaphorical sense. Clemente tells her not to leave mad, but she storms
out anyway, telling him that now she has to get some boots.
Neela is having trouble clearing a bed for Kerry. Weaver
tells her that it isn’t necessary and tries to get up. She stops as her hip
seems to be really hurting her. Neela wants to examine her. Kerry agrees, to
Neela’s surprise, and tells her she wants to be treated like any other
patient. Luka tells Neela that they need to run the board as she begins to
wheel Kerry out of the hall. Neela calls out, “I have to take my broken-hip
lady…” But Kerry cuts her off, snapping that her hip isn’t broken.
The paramedics are wheeling in Ted Cunningham with Abby and
another woman. He is 23 years old in a coma from the nursing home. The woman
with them tells them that there was mucus build up and they tried to suction
it, but his trach tube came out. Abby asks if she is from the home. No, she is
his mother. Luka tells Pratt to go with Abby, but he is watching her. Abby
asks Ted to open his eyes. His mother tells them that he can’t follow
commands. Luka watches Abby until she turns into the room. Abby is surprised
that Ted needs an N.G. tube, but his mother explains that it is just a guide
to change the airway. Abby asks how long he has been in a coma. His mother
tells them that two years ago, on his 21st birthday, his friends took him to a
bar and made him drink 21 shots. On the way home he stepped into traffic and
got clipped by a pick-up truck. He has been in a coma ever since. She reaches
out and holds Ted’s hand tenderly, telling Abby that even if you raise a kid
right, one stupid night can turn them into this.
Flashback
Abby is standing in the bathroom, holding a positive blue
pregnancy test. There are six or seven more in the sink, all positive. Luka
calls out that it is time to open the presents; “Blue Christmas” is playing in
the background. He sticks his head in the bathroom door. He wants to know what
she is doing. Abby shrugs, she is just making sure. Luka walks in slowly. When
he sees the tests in the sink, his eyebrows raise, slightly amused. He tells
her that he thinks she can stop now. Abby doesn’t turn around. They look at
each other through the mirror. Luka tells her gently that they can find a way
to make it work, if that is what she wants. Abby turns around to face him. She
doesn’t know what she wants. “I’m 37 years old. If not now, when?” Luka tells
her that he thinks everything happens for a reason. Abby shrugs it off,
telling him that it scares her. He puts a hand on her shoulder, comfortingly,
and asks her if she is scared of keeping it, or choosing not to? She replies
simply, “Yeah.”
Pratt is calling Abby. They are still taking care of Ted.
Ted’s mother asks if he will be alright. Abby replies that he will be better
now that he has a new tube. She thanks Abby for her help. Abby sees Dr. Coburn
walking into the exam room next door. She asks Pratt what she’s doing here. He
shrugs and tells her that there is some scared lady with ovarian cancer.
Neela is taking care of Kerry. Weaver asks how married life
is. Neela tells her that it is nice and that they are looking for their own
place. She says that Michael is going to finish his residency in a military
hospital. Kerry wants to know what the closest one is. Neela tells her Texas.
Kerry is in pain when Neela examines her hip. She looks concerned, tells Kerry
that she hopes Michael will end up somewhere not too far away. Kerry sees that
Neela looks worried and assures her that it is probably just a contusion from
where she hit the ground. Neela wants to check her range of motion. Lifts
Kerry’s leg, and she flinches. Neela tells her that she is in pain with
internal rotation. Kerry says that it has happened before and all she needs is
an ice pack for 10 minutes. Neela asks her if she wants any narcotics. Weaver
refuses and says just 800 ibuprofen and a hip series. Neela begins to tell her
that she needs to run it past her attending, then realizes what she is saying.
She apologizes and Kerry asks her to pull the curtain before she leaves.
Ray approaches Neela and asks how Kerry is doing. Neela
tells him that she is very cranky. Ray asks her if she can “soften her up” and
Neela wants to know why. He tells her for his T.O. request. Neela wants to
know what he could possibly need time off for. Ray asks her if she knows who
Barry Ginsberg is. “The gynecologist on the fourth floor?” she tries. Ray
rolls his eyes. He is a record producer. He listened to his band’s tracks and
now they are going to L.A. to play at the Key Club. If it goes well they get
to record a demo at his studio in Venice. Chuny asks if he means Venice,
Italy. He means in California. Chuny tells him congratulations and then hands
him the chart of a “super-infected foot fungus”. Ray maintains that he just
needs a month off. Both Sam and Neela do not think that is a “little” bit of
time.
Sam asks Neela if she will examine Amanda Ramsey, a 15 year
old complaining of vague pain. Neela tells her that she has to take care of
Weaver, but Sam will trade her. Neela looks at the chart, then back at Sam. “I
haven’t told her yet.” Sam says, and begins to walk away. Neela understands
and goes over to Amanda. The girl tells Neela that she didn’t mean to make a
big deal and Neela replies that they ran a test on her urine. Amanda asks if
she has a bladder infection. Neela tells her that she is pregnant. Amanda’s
face falls, and she gets very quiet. Neela asks if she knew, but Amanda
doesn’t reply and it is clear that she didn’t. Amanda asks if they told her
parents, and Neela tells her that they know she’s at the hospital, but nothing
else. Neela asks her who the father is, and she says that it’s just some guy
from her school; he is not her boyfriend. Neela offers for the adolescent
clinic to come down to speak with her, but she refuses, saying that her
parents wouldn’t like that. Neela tells her that she has a number of options.
Amanda tells her that she can either keep it or give it up for adoption, but
she could never choose not to have it because that would be against God. Neela
looks confused.
A stab-wound victim enters with Morris and Clemente. Abby
offers to help, but they tell her that they are all set. Coburn is telling her
patient, Sarah, not to worry about having her ovary removed, and that is why
God gave her “a spare”. She says she will be up in 15 minutes. As she starts
to walk away, Abby comes up to her and asks how things are going. Coburn tells
her that things are fine and asks if Abby knows about an ultrasound she was
just paged for. Abby doesn’t, but she tells Coburn she heard that she had
started her own practice. Coburn tells her that it is going well, except the
boss is a bitch. Abby looks at her blankly, and Coburn tells her that she
is the boss. Abby laughs half-heartedly and Coburn tells Abby to stop
patronizing her. Abby pulls Coburn aside and tells her that she may need to
come in for an OB. Coburn congratulates her, but when she sees the expression
on Abby’s face she shuts up. Abby tells her that it was not something expected
and Coburn asks if it is something she wants. Abby doesn’t think she is at the
right point in her life, and she starts to cry. Coburn hands her a tissue,
saying that she is always prepared. Coburn hands her a card and tells Abby
that she has office hours every afternoon and that she can come anytime. She
can help with prenatal care or termination, whatever Abby decides. Abby thanks
her and Coburn reminds her that whatever she decides will be the right thing.
Morris and Clemente are working on the stab victim. He says
that his friends stabbed him and Clemente asks if anyone called the cops. The
man doesn’t want the cops to come. He says that he has problems that the
police will only make worse. Clemente understands this, and says he will help.
Coburn and Neela are doing an ultrasound on Amanda when
Luka walks in. Amanda asks if there could have been a mistake with the
pregnancy test. Coburn tells her that that is impossible and shows her where
the baby’s heartbeat is. She estimates that the baby is 7 weeks along. Amanda
is worried that her parents won’t understand, that they will think that she
has sinned, and Neela offers to help her talk to them. Amanda doesn’t say
anything, just continues to look mortified. Luka asks Neela to talk to her,
and they move aside so that they can’t be heard. Luka tells Neela that she
should have checked in with him before calling a consult. Neela replies that
Amanda was “15 and scared” and they would have had to call an OB eventually
anyway. Luka asks about the family, and Neela tells him that they are very
religious.
Abby is stitching up a deep cut on a teen boy’s shoulder.
She asks him how he got the cut. He tells her that he jumped off a bus. She
wants to know if he slipped on the ice, but he tells her that he was skitching
and fell off the fender. Abby suggests that it is probably easier to pay. The
boy tells her that he doesn’t have any surplus income to blow. Abby’s voice
gets quiet when she asks him if he was on his way home. He tells her that he
hasn’t been home in a while and she thinks that his parents are probably
worried. That seems to be the problem. They always worried about what he was
doing and where he was going. Abby doesn’t think that sounds so bad, but the
boy tells her defiantly that he is an independent spirit and wants to be on
his own. Abby asks if his parents know where he is, and he tells her that they
don’t and that he “just left one day”.
Flashback
Abby is lying on her back in bed, Luka is by her side,
facing her. Abby tells him that she is afraid she won’t love the baby right.
Luka obviously thinks she’s being too hard on herself. Abby doesn’t think she
is strong enough, and when Luka tells her that being a parent will make her
stronger she reminds him that he told her before that it breaks your heart.
Luka is quiet when he tells her that is not what he meant. Abby turns to look
at him, a sad look on her face. She apologizes and he tells her not to use his
past as a reason not to have the baby. Abby asks seriously what will happen if
she goes shopping and leaves the baby in the supermarket. Luka laughs quietly
and reassures her that he will do all the shopping. Abby turns away again and
says that she is scared she would mess it up. Luka reaches out an arm to touch
her and tells her that they won’t.
Abby is still sitting with the teen boy. She gets up and
tells him to keep the wound clean, dry, and to come back in a week to get his
stitches removed. The boy looks slightly disheartened and asks her if that is
all. She tells him yes. Then, realizing he might be asking for help, she turns
around and asks him if he wants to talk to someone from social work.
Neela brings Amanda’s parents in to her room. Her mother is
concerned, asks if she is alright. Neela will leave them to talk, but Amanda
asks her to stay. She begins to tell her parents, but can’t find the words.
She looks to Neela for help. Neela tells them that they ran some tests and
Amanda is pregnant. Amanda begins to cry. Neela says that she could bring
someone down to talk to them, but they want to be alone with their daughter.
Dr. Albright enters as Morris and Clemente continue to
treat the stab victim. She wants to know if anything entered the peritoneal.
Morris tells her that they don’t know yet, and she snaps that that doesn’t
answer her question. Malik enters to tell them that the police are here. The
victim looks worried, but Clemente says he will take care of it. He walks
outside and tells the police that the patient is out of it and that they won’t
be able to get a statement today. The police, however, are not here for the
victim. They were looking for Clemente.
Morris tells Albright that the patient is stable with no
peritoneal signs. He only called her because it was protocol. Neela walks in
and introduces herself to Albright. She promptly ignores her and tells Morris
to call her once he knows how deep in the peritoneal cavity the wound is.
Neela speaks up saying that 1/3 stab wounds enter the peritoneal and damage
the viscera, 1/3 go in and hit nothing, and 1/3 are shallow. She inserts a
Q-tip through the wound and it comes out of another wound. The trajectory was
suggested by the hilt-mark of the knife and he won’t need surgery. Albright is
impressed. She tells Neela to call her about the surgical elective.
Clemente is asking the police whether they are seriously
here about parking tickets. They tell him that he also left New York General
with some serious allegations. Clemente is immediately defensive and stresses
that he would never compromise a patient’s care. They believe him, and ask him
about his issues with Jodie. He says there were none, that she was just a
nurse he worked with. They think he has seen her, but he tells them that he
hasn’t. They tell him that she is a missing person and might be in trouble.
Clemente thinks that sometimes people go missing because it is safer. They
warn him not to go missing. Clemente gets upset and raises his voice, telling
them that he would hate to be less than 100% if a cop gets shot. Pratt watches
the exchange. When the police leave, Clemente goes into the drug lock-up and
pops a couple pills.
Ray brings Kerry a turkey for lunch. She tells him that the
answer to his request is no. He tells her that this is a dream that he never
thought would come true. Kerry tells him that he had been warned before about
his commitment and that he has been doing well. She thinks he is a great
doctor and wants to keep him on. He tells her that if he couldn’t do this,
that he would seriously consider quitting. Kerry doesn’t want to stand in his
way, so she accepts his resignation. Ray is dumbfounded. That is not what he
meant.
Morris and Neela are talking as they walk down the hall.
Morris wants to know why Neela wants to go into surgery. She tells him that
she is curious. They see Ray, looking a little distraught and ask what is
wrong. He thinks he may have just quit to go to California, he doesn’t sound
happy about it and walks away. Neela tells Morris that she already sent in the
paperwork for surgery. Morris wants her to get it back because they are
understaffed. Clemente appears and asks everyone if people have been asking
about Jodie. No one has. He tells everyone that they need to say that they
have never heard of Jodie or himself. Everyone is slightly confused.
Mr. Ramsey comes up to the desk and asks Neela for whatever
forms they need to sign Amanda out. They want to arrange their own prenatal
care. Neela is surprised that they are going to keep it because Amanda is so
young and it was an accident. Mr. Ramsey does not believe in accidents. Neela
is concerned about the long term effects it will have on Amanda, but Mr.
Ramsey is more concerned with the spiritual effects. He believes that anything
that would interfere with the creation of life is morally indefensible. Neela
just wants to make sure that Amanda knows what her options are.
Pratt and Abby are taking care of a chemo patient. Pratt
leaves to go find Clemente. The patient tells Abby that he is not the sickly
type and that he used to do triathlons. Abby jokes that she did too: drinking,
smoking, and watching TV. He laughs and tells her that two years ago he was
diagnosed with the Philadelphia chromosome and he was screwed by genetics.
Flashback
Abby and Luka are dancing to Auld Lang Syne. Abby tells
Luka that the first time she was pregnant she was panicked that the baby would
be bipolar, and that maybe she still is. He tells her that the chances are
small and everything is risk. She knows that, but she tells him he doesn’t
know what it was like to grow up with Maggie and Eric. Luka tells her she is
looking for reasons, and she asks him if he is just looking for someone to
have a baby with. Luka pulls away and looks at her, hurt. He asks her if that
is what she thinks their relationship is and if she does “what the hell are we
doing here?” Abby sighs and tells him Happy New Year. Luka smiles slightly and
bends down to kiss her.
Abby tells the man that a whole cascade of things have to
happen to cause CML. Just because he had the genes doesn’t mean he had to have
cancer. He agrees, but tells her that it just means he was born with a big
strike against him. Abby considers the truth of this statement.
Clemente is on the roof of the hospital leaving a message
for Jodie to call him. Pratt approaches and jokes about Clemente jumping, then
asks him to sign off on a chart. Pratt wants to know if Clemente wants to
talk. He doesn’t. Pratt tells him that no one is ever going to stand up for
Clemente if they don’t know him. Clemente tells Pratt about how Jodie was a
crazy nurse that he was with, and it ended bad. He came to Chicago to get away
and focus on his work. Pratt thinks that sounds like a good idea. Clemente
tells him that he can’t seem to get away from her, or her pissed husband.
Pratt laughs at this and tells him that he likes him better already. Clemente
gets paged and they head inside.
Luka is looking at Amanda’s test results when he sees Abby
gathering her things, getting ready to leave. He asks if she is off already
and she tells him she has a doctor appointment at Coburn’s practice. He tells
her that he wants to go with her as she walks out the door, but she tells him
it would be easier if he didn’t. In the ambulance bay he grabs her arm and she
turns around to face him. He tells her, “When I say I want us to keep it, you
don’t like the way it sounds. But anything else is a lie.” Abby looks like
this is killing her but doesn’t say anything. Luka tells her that he doesn’t
know what else to say so Abby suggests that he doesn’t say anything. She turns
around and walks away, leaving Luka alone and bereft.
Neela gives Amanda pills to keep her and the baby healthy.
Luka comes into the room and gives her papers with more information that might
be helpful. He also gives her an ultrasound picture that they took. Amanda
looks at it with something akin to horror. She tells them that she wished she
could make this all go away. Luka tells her that everything happens for a
reason, echoing his own words to Abby. Amanda looks at him blankly when he
tells her that, and turns to Neela. She tells them that she was at a party,
and she drank and took some drugs. She passed out in a bedroom and when she
woke up her pants were on the floor and there was blood all over the sheets.
Luka and Neela look shocked and Neela asks if Amanda was raped. “I always
thought the first time would be with someone I loved.” She replies. Neela
encourages her to tell her parents, telling her they will understand. Amanda
replies that she already told them what happened.
Mrs. Ramsey is on the phone outside the room when Neela
asks to speak with her. She asks the mother if Amanda told her what happened,
and Mrs. Ramsey said that she did. Neela is shocked that she still wants her
to have the baby, but Amanda’s mother does not think the baby should be
punished. However, she says that she would never force Amanda to do anything
she didn’t want to. Neela is concerned for Amanda’s best interest, but Mrs.
Ramsey does not think that it is in her best interest to murder an innocent
child. She walks away, close to tears.
Neela is angry and Luka tells her to leave the family alone
and that they have made their decision. Neela is convinced that Amanda’s “head
is so far twisted she doesn’t even know she has a choice”. Luka tells her that
she doesn’t want an abortion, but Neela replies that she doesn’t want the baby
either. Luka tells her to let it go and begins to walk away. Neela says that
he is the wrong person to talk to about it, and Luka turns around. Neela
requests his permission to consult with an attending who is not Catholic. Luka
barely contains his anger as he tells her, tight lipped, that his personal
beliefs would never interfere with a patient’s best interest. Ever. Neela
apologizes, but he takes the chart from her anyway and tells her that she is
off the case.
Abby is waiting in Coburn’s office. She is watching
children play, husbands and wives sitting together with excitement, babies
crying. She is silent and does not smile. At the same time, Luka is back in
the room with Amanda. He asks her if she wants to have the baby and she tells
him that it is not what she wants. Luka hands her a lameneria and explains
that it goes into the cervix and creates a larger opening from which the fetus
might fall out, causing her to miscarry. Amanda asks if it will hurt and Luka
tells her that there might be some cramping. With tears in her eyes, Amanda
asks him if it is a sin. Luka pauses, looking at her with compassion, and
tells her that it is “a medical way we have of…giving God a chance to
reconsider.” Back at Coburn’s office, Abby’s name is called.
Clemente is in front of the hospital when Jodie steps out
of a cab. Clemente grabs her and tells her that they have to leave. The cops
are all over him and Bobby has filed a missing persons report. Jodie is
surprised but she tells him that he is a little too nervous. As they see
Clemente’s car, Jodie begins to laugh. There are tickets all over the
windshield and his wheels are locked. Ray comes out and sees the car. He
introduces himself to Jodie and tells her that he has never had any trouble
parking there before. Angry, Clemente tells Ray they are taking the El, and he
grabs Jodie and stalks off. She is still giggling. Ray is meeting one of his
band members, and the guy shows up. He tells Ray that he and the rest of the
guys talked it out, and they decided that the band needed to make some
changes. Ray’s face falls. He knows what that means.
Luka has just finished inserting the lamenaria. He tells
her she will need to come back in a couple of weeks to have it removed. Amanda
is somber when he tells her this. Without another word, she begins quoting the
Bible: “Before I formed thee in the belly I knew thee; and before thou camest
forth out of the womb I sanctified thee and ordained thee a profit unto the
nations.” She feels guilty about what she is doing. Luka recognizes it as
Jeremiah. He replies by saying “Man was made of dust. It was only when God
breathed like into Adam that he became a living soul.” He tells her that is
from Genesis. Surprised, Amanda realizes that he is a Christian. She asks what
she should tell her mother. Luka tells her that she will think Amanda is
having a miscarriage. She will be having a miscarriage.
Abby walks out of the clinic. Her face impossible to read.
She is neither happy nor sad. She does not yet seem to know what to make of
her decision. At the same time, Luka tells Mrs. Ramsey that she can take
Amanda home. Neela asks what he was doing in there all this time, and he
replies that he was taking care of a patient. Luka walks over to the phone and
calls Abby. She is not home yet, she is walking along the river alone. Luka
leaves a short message. He sounds sad.
Kerry is looking at her chart. She has advanced
degeneration with a cartilaginous flap. She supposes that explains the pain.
Luka is sitting with her. He says that he has seen that kind of thing heal
with bed rest and physical therapy. Kerry knows she needs a total hip
replacement. She reflects on the bad timing, as Henry is starting to run
around “like a madman”. Luka smiles slightly, thinking of the child is painful
for him when he was so close to having his own. He asks how Henry is doing.
Kerry tells him that Henry is great, and that he looks just like Sandy.
Abby is sitting on the bench near the water by herself.
Luka comes up behind her. He tells her that he went by her apartment, but he
thought she might come home this way. She is startled to see him, but quickly
turns away again. Luka does not want everything they have to come down to this
one decision. He thinks that they can get past it and still be together. He
understands that she did what she had to do. Abby turns around to face him and
tells him that she didn’t do it. Luka looks confused. Abby clarifies that she
wants to keep it, that she want them to have the baby. Luka’s expression
softens and he sits next to her and takes her hand. They stare out at the
water together, no words necessary.
