Pratt
and Inez go out into the cold to wait for an ambulance who is bring in Martin
"Marty" Trudeau who is having
shortness of breath. He had a cardiac transplant in 2001. He wonders if
the Mayo Clinic gives refunds on bad hearts. Neela is doing her paramedic
ride-along and is with paramedics Zadro and Tony Gates. Pratt asks Tony
how the rookie (Neela) is doing and he replies, "She could smile more".
Neela tells them all of the medications that Marty is on. Pratt asks her
how she is really doing and she tells him, "Gates is like a dog in heat".
Tony has given Neela a nickname, "Mayday", and she is not too fond of it.
Sam comes and gets Pratt to help with his patient and Ray comes to see how his
"roomy" is doing.
Neela
checks out Ray's cuts and bruises from his interaction with Zoe's father at
the end of the previous episode. She helps in with some new bandages and
tells him that he got off easy. He could have done jail time for
statutory rape. He asks her if she has heard from Gallant and she tells
him that he is stuck in Iraq. He thinks it is good because he wants to
come back home. Neela tells him that he can come home under certain
conditions. Ray spots Zoe at the admit. desk, so he sends Neela over to
get rid of her. Neela tells her that Ray is off, but she knows his
schedule and doesn't believe her. She has made Ray a "make-up mix" CD.
She asks Neela to give it to him. Tony tells Neela that they have to go.
Neela throws it into the garbage and Jerry picks it out.
Jerry
asks Neela where Abby is because the Residency office is phoning for her.
Neela tells Jerry that she is on nights. Abby wakes up and has an arm
around her and she is holding a hand. We see that she is lying in bed
with Luka after spending the night together.

Pratt confronts Mr. Trudeau about why is lung's are wet.
Marty has quit taking his meds. He tells Pratt
that he can't afford to take all the medication.
Pratt tells him that he is wasting a good heart.
Pratt tells him that he will die if he quits taking his
medication, but Marty does not care. Eve is on her
way out of town and is worried because the ER is short
nursing staff. Malik is at a funeral in Detroit
and Lily is off. Sam assures Eve that they will be
okay. Ray tends to a large man who thinks that he
is a samurai. Is name is "Kobayashi". Jerry
has taken several phone messages for Dr. Clemente.
They are all from the same woman.
Luka wakes up to find nobody beside him in his bed.
He looks up to see Abby naked and wrapped in a blanket.
He asks her what she is doing and she tells him,
"looking for my underwear". He wants to know if
she is on tonight and she tells him no. Luka asks
her why she is leaving and tells her that she should
stay. He finds her bra and panties and throws them
to her. He asks her is she still likes ketchup on
her eggs and she shakes her head yes. He gets up
and tells her that he will fix some breakfast.
Abby tells him that they slept through breakfast and
lunch.
Liza Trudeau has arrived at the ER to check on her
husband. She tells Pratt that she can't believe
that her husband is doing this to himself. She
wants to know if Pratt can stop him. "He's my
life. I'm not ready to let him go", she tells
Pratt.

Zadro,
Neela and Tony were called to tend a homeless man, but
there wasn't anything wrong with him. He had
called 911, but was only wanting a ride. Tony
gives him cab fare and tells him, "Next time fake a
seizure". Tony asks Neela out for sushi and she
asks Zadro what she has to do to keep Tony from
bothering her. Zadro tells her that Tony is afraid
of married women and Neela tells Tony that she has a
boyfriend. Tony asks about him and Neela tells him
that Michael is in the Army over in Iraq. Tony
tells her that he was a medic in Desert Storm over in
the 101st Airborne. Tony has Zadro ride in the
back of the ambulance and he lets Neela ride up front
with him. They are going somewhere to get free
coffee. Pratt has arranged for Mr. Trudeau to be taken to the
Mayo clinic by helicopter. He is putting him back
on his meds to help his heart from being rejected.
Marty is not too crazy about it, but Pratt tells him to
do it for his wife. As Pratt is watching the
helicopter left off and take flight, he notices an
explosion in the distance. He see that a plane has
torn apart and is going down. Abby and Luka can
hear the explosion from his apartment and Neela and Tony
see the explosion nearby.

The news is on in the ER and we can see that a plane has
crashed in Chicago near the ER. Dr. Clemente and
the ER staff are preparing for a lot of patients.
A man walks up and is upset about how long he has been
waiting six hours to have his dislocated finger treated.
Dr. Clemente tells him that he is not a critical
patient, but the man disagrees. Dr. Clemente grabs
the guys finger and pops it back into place as the
patient is screaming in pain. Jerry tells them to
be quiet so that he can hear what the news anchor is
saying about the crash. A single-engine craft
struck a passenger plane in mid-air at low altitude
moments after takeoff. Jerry wonders if it could
have been terrorist and Sam is wondering what plane Eve
was suppose to be on. The pilot lost control soon
after takeoff. Clemente turns the television off
and tells the staff to be prepared for the patients.
Pickman comes in and tells them that she needs a doc to
go out to the crash site with her to assist the victims.
Both Pratt and Ray want to go, but Clemente decides
Pratt will be better suited. He tells him to be
back in an hour.
Tony,
Neela and Zadro arrive at the crash site. Zadro
and Tony explain to Neela the triage tags to place on
the victims, "Green is nothing, yellow is urgent, red is
critical, black is dead". The scene is chaotic and
they can't believe their eyes. Buildings are on
fire, people are walking around in a daze, people are
lying motionless on the ground and there is screaming
and yelling of agony throughout the crowd. Chief
Bukata tells the three where to go to do triage.
Neela sees a red carry on bag on the ground and it looks
just like the one Eve was carrying through the ER
earlier. Neela goes to her first victim who is in
a crushed car and there is no pulse and he isn't
breathing. Tony tells her to black tag him and
move on one person at a time. Tony and Neela look
up at each other as they go through the crowd of people
realizing that many of them are already dead.
Ray is
still wanting to go to the crash site, but Clemente tells him no.
Clemente is outside the ER doors and is assessing the patients before they
enter the ER. Abby and Luka have come in to help and tell Clemente that
they can see the patients in the waiting room, but Clemente tells them to
triage them outside. Sam is on the phone and is trying to get
information about Eve. Ray is moving patients to make room for more and
sees Zoe hiding in a curtain area. He tells her to leave him alone, but
she still wants to see him. He is adamant about not wanting to have any
dealings with her and is afraid of going to jail. She tells him that she
loves him and he tells her that she is too young. "Kobayashi"
comes by Ray and knocks him to the floor.
Pratt
arrives at the crash site an finds Neela. Tony is tending to Woody
Evans, 85, auto versus pedestrian. He has a blunt chest trauma.
Neela assists him and the man asks about his dog. Woody tells them that
he was walking his dog when he was hit. She is a cocker spaniel and he
is really concerned about her. He yells for the dog whose name is Riley.
Pratt and Pickman head to the plane to tend to Baxter Yee who has a facial
trauma and projectile to the right chest. He asks if someone could call
his fiancée. "Lila Frankfurt is her name" he tells them. Pratt is
surprised by what good condition he is in after such a trauma. Pratt
tells him that he is one lucky guy. Pickman yells for Pratt to come
check on another patient who has crushing substernal chest pain and high blood
pressure. He can't feel his arm because it is buried under the ruble.
Neela
and Tony are tending to Woody when a woman named Alice Watson walks up with
her daughter, Olive, in her arms. She tells them that her daughter was
cut from the window exploding and that her son is still on the second floor of
the apartment building. He can't walk because his legs were cut also.
Tony tells her that they will evacuate the building and she tells him that her
building isn't on fire and she can go back and get him. Tony stops her
from leaving and tells her that he will go to get him.
Paramedic
Olbes has brought Baxter Yee into the ER and Dr. Clemente and Luka check him
out on his arrival. Luka is upset to learn that Pratt is out in the
field. "We need doctors here, not off playing in a field" he tells him.
Pickman and Pratt are still tending to their patient, Adrian, who has his arm
stuck in the ruble. It is taking time before Chief Bukata can get his
men to lift the ruble. Pratt speaks with the man and learns that he was
there to visit his girlfriend in the neighborhood. Pickman tells Pratt
that the patient is in V-tach! Pratt charges the paddle and gets sinus
and a good pulse. Adrian comes to and is alert. Alice is upset
that her son has not been rescued yet. Neela and Zadro tell her that
Tony has gone to get him. Woody tells them not to worry about him and to
help her, but Neela is concerned that Woody's aorta has been damaged.
Alice takes off into the building and Neela chases after her. As Neela
enters the building, a big explosion occurs.

Neela is
okay and is communicating with the chief over the walkie-talkie. She has
found Tony who is with Alice who is impaled and he tells Neela that he has a
femur fracture. Tony tells Neela to get out of the building. Alice
yells to her that her soon is in apartment #207. "Help him!", she yells.
Tony tells her to leave the building now. Neela runs to the boy.
Greg grabs the walkie-talkie and tells Neela to get out of the building.
Neela finds the boy and grabs him. She drops her walkie-talkie and Pratt
is unable to know if she is safe. They are finally able to remove the
ruble off of Adrian's arm, but he goes into V-tach again. Pratt doesn't
get a response after shocking him with the paddles, so he starts doing
compressions. As he is working on Adrian he can hear someone over the
walkie-talkie say that they have found a female in the burning building with
no vitals. Neela has the boy in her arms and is trying to get out of the
building.
Back in
the ER Sam has called Haleh back in to work. Abby and Luka are working
on Baxter. Haleh comes in to assist and they are both glad to see her
back. Baxter goes unconscious and stops breathing. He seems to be
choking. Back at the crash site Pratt and Pickman are wheeling Adrian
toward an ambulance. He learns that the female that they found in the
building was an eighty-year-old woman. Neela is still trying to escape
with the boy. Adrian is coming to and they stop compressions. He
is still V-tach and has no pulse, but he is conscious. Pratt continues
CPR and tells Adrian what is going on. They are going to get him to a
hospital. Neela and the young boy are rescued. She has had a lot
of smoke inhalation. She is reprimanded by the chief. Neela
notices that Woody has found his dog, but it is too late. Woody has died
from a blown aorta. Zadro prepares to take Alice and her two kids to the
ER for treatment. Alice thanks her. Tony is strapped to a gurney
and is not doing well.
Abby finds that Baxter was choking on a
tooth that he had swallowed. Luka and Clemente are still disagreeing
about patient care. Neela opens Tony's belly out in the field. He
asks her to go out with him before he gives her permission to cut. Pratt
has Adrian in the ER and Sam and Ray are assisting him. Ray is upset
that Pratt left Neela out in the field and let her go into the burning
building. Greg and Ray take turns doing CPR on Adrian, who is still
conscious. Sam holds up a card for Adrian to point to, so that he can
communicate with them. He points to the card and tells them that he
wants his family. Sam tells him that she has called them and that they
are on their way.

Neela and Zadro arrive in the ER with
Tony. They can see that she has cut him open and they take him up to the
OR for Dubenko and Abby checks on Neela's condition. She sees that Neela
has singed nasal hairs, which indicates substantial smoke inhalation.
Neela tells Abby that she is okay, but Abby insists on checking her out.
Neela feels good about her day and wants to go back out. Abby learns
that Alice Watson died. Neela wants to go find her kids. Luka is
on the way to take Baxter up to ICU. Baxter thanks them for his second
chance. He is happy and he is ready to call off the wedding. He
has a chance to do what he wants to do and say how he feels. "Carpe
Diem", he tells them. Abby tells him "good luck with that". He
replies, "Besides, I'm pretty sure I'm gay".
Ray is still doing compressions.
Adrian's family and girlfriend have arrived. Ray can see Neela in the
exam room next to them and he and Pratt are happy to see her. Eve has
arrived back in the ER and sees that Haleh is back. She tells Sam that
it was a "good move" bringing her back. Neela is on her way out and
heading home. Abby is concerned about her being alone. Abby asks
her if there is anything that she can say to convince her not to go home
alone. Abby tells her that she slept with Luka, but Neela replies, "Nice
try".
Sam comes in to bag Adrian. Pratt
explains what will happen when they stop CPR. He tells the girlfriend
that he is not in pain and that they have done everything. Adrian looks
up to Pratt and is ready for them to stop. Adrian dies as his family and
friends look on. His girlfriend moans and sobs. "9:42 pm", Ray
calls the time of death. Pratt tells them that he is sorry and walks out
of the room. "He was a lucky guy", Sam tells Pratt. He replies,
"He's dead". "A lot of people loved him. They all got a chance to
say good-bye", she replies.
Clemente is on the phone with a woman.
He is tired of her calling him at work constantly. He tells her,
"I..don't...love...you. Go back to your husband" and slams down the
phone. Clemente sees Luka and tells them that they need to talk.
Luka tells him that they can talk tomorrow. Luka runs in to Abby on his
way out. They discuss the rough night and she asks if Baxter was okay.
They talk about what happened between the two of them. "It was nice",
she tells him with a smile on her face. Luka agrees, but he thinks they
would be better off as friends. She is the one person that he can out
on. She agrees. "Maybe we should just leave it at that then", she
suggests. Abby heads back inside and Luka walks away. Both turn
back at different times to glance at each other.
Neela arrives home after a long day and
night. She turns around to see Michael Gallant get out of a cab.
She runs to him and they embrace each other in the middle of the street as the
cars blow their horns at them.
