Ok here is my review and opinion of the first episode of the12th season&how the season seems to be going. The first episode was not the greatest way to open a new season in my opinion. The previous Season have also been lacking in this respect.  The follow-on from Drive is the only exception because we were treated with a cliffhanger and then the 1st episode of Season 11 carried on from that and there was some suspense to look forward too.  I just think that the opening of this new season won't shock or surprise anyone or show just how great a show ER is or can be.  Anyway back to the plot.

Luka is now the first to show at the credit roll.  This may anger some loyal Luka lovers (I myself am one so don't hurt me too much) but I don't think he should be the first for the following reasons.

Luka Kovac may be one of the longest members there compared to the majority of the characters e.g. Neela, Ray or Pratt, but even still the character of Kerry Weaver is now the longest surviving character, since Carter left.  It is only right that she should be first, but then again the woman is hardly in the show any more so I'll agree that she might be the 1st choice.  Also is it not about time that a woman is put at the starting line-up.  I mean even though Susan isn't going to remain for long, should not she or even Abby be placed first in the introduction roll.  With the exception of Carter it is the female characters that have had the most interesting stories.  The Luka/Sam/Steve storyline can hardly be called dynamic as Luka is usually brooding or apologizing to Sam most of the time (whether an apology is necessary or not).  And apart from the odd fling with a girl he instantly forgets the only real storyline Pratt has had is the brief encounter with his father (Danny Glover).  Abby may be a character that some people are divided on, you ether love her or hate her, but I still stand by her or Weaver being first. Now depending on how Luka's character plays out and if the storylines are juicy enough I could change my mind, Ray is getting the job done in most of his scenes, but is still cruised by both Doctors and Nurses. He has to be reminded that this is a teaching hospital, but if Ray is in a trauma, then surely the most important thing is that the patient lives and not the interns learn how to draw blood. But he continues this with other less critical patients and when he's called up on it Susan asks Haleh's opinion. Ray seems peeved off at this and ask why Nurses get to assess doctors.  Come on Ray, they've been in this game longer than you and have taken a lot of crap over the years. Honestly you'd think Ray has never seen an episode of ER. :roll eyes:

Now Pratt seems to act like he has more power and sense than he actually does. But this is something we've seen when Carter got more power in the ER.  Ego's are instantly increased whenever you go from a skivvy of a resident, to a resident yourself. The way Pratt acts reminds me of how Carter acted around Maggie Doyle or Lucy Knight when he ever had a confrontation with them. Apart from this Pratt did nothing of importance in this episode at all.

Although Susan's appearance was brief it was the only thing that was good about certain scenes and this is because she had something thoughtful, critical and serious to say in every scene and that sort of 'ER way' of showing the managerial side of things has gone. Her still being in the show, brings a sense of the old familiar ER back. I'm sure this is simply because she was one of the original cast, but she's the only character that they never really focused on "the doomed relationship" with. Carter, Abby, Luka, Kerry, Mark...they've all gone through it.  But she's had a brief fling with Carter and then she settled down and had a son...terribly dubbed 'Cosmo'.  Usually when the only story you can come up with for a character is 'love triangles' etc.. it's a sign that then writers can't come up with anything interesting.  This has never really applied to Susan.

The Samka thing was actually painful to watch and not because Alex was missing, because to be honest we all knew he'd be okay.  But the tension and silence between the 2 was unbearable..moreso for them I'd reckon. I mean they were driving all day and night with hardly a word to each other and imagine how boring that must of been. It also shows just how 'polite' and patient Luka is.

Though the scene where Sam runs over an antelope...how the hell are there antelope in America scared the crap outta me. How Luka didn't scream like a girl also and not wet his pants after that I don't know. Though I think Sam asking what we all want to know, how can Luka be happy with the life he has now was very well done. It's a sign that the Samka relationship is over and this is a good thing. Sorry Samka lovers, but the relationship was never going to go anywhere, despite the odd times when an incident would happen (usually involving Steve) and Luka&Sam seemed to bond. Hopefully now both characters will be getting much better as the Season progresses.

Now Neela is showing a bit more balls and by that I don't mean she's flashing or running around the hospital nude. No, she had to correct her new intern several times and at the end of yet another mistake by him she had had enough and gave out to him. I think that this is a good thing for her character and that the tough love was needed. It's a bout damn time. Her nervousness was beginning to annoy us and the rest of the Doctors in the ER.  Though I find it annoying that there a too many new members in the show I'm glad they brought Neela aboard. In a away she provides a good replacement for the departed Corday (which was a stupid thing to do, but I won't get into that).  She's starting to shine more and hopefully either she or Abby will try to go up in the world of medicine and try for Chief Resident some time.  Plus when she said 'bollocks' it was funny.

Abby appeared near the end and showed that she's quick when it comes to treating the triage patients.  That's all well and good, but apart from that you hardly noticed her character.  And it seems Ray's disease is spreading because yup, she too treated patients but forgot to explain to her students how she did it and how exactly she diagnosed them.  Which by the way was cool to watch.  Luka would of been proud of her not having to use any expensive exams to determine what was wrong with patients.  Or is he finally over that money-spending phase?

What disappointed me the most though was that Kerry didn't show her head once.  This is not just because she's is a fav of mine but she should be in the show now more than anyone and she has some storylines that could make for good viewing eg. Alderman scandal.  I mean that is a storyline just begging to be expanded and used.  Plus where the hell is Henry?  Did she forget about him in some toy shop?  Her character is one of the most interesting and diverse of the whole bunch.  But they've seem to forgotten all about her.

I'm glad though that Dubenko wasn't there because his character is bringing nothing to the ER and is a poor replacement for Romano.  I'm all for the Ghost of Romano popping up for an episode.  Honestly the only hope I can see for this show is some of the older characters coming back.  Still ER rocks and I will remain loyal to it until the end.

This is only the first episode, so hopefully the rest will be an improvement.  Bring on Season 12.
