Frank prompts Neela that the backache
patient she saw the day before had returned. Abby tells her she can sign him
over to her but she has to do a full examine before she leaves the building.
Neela agrees and heads out to greet him. Pratt stops her and tells her that he
overheard that the Iraqi girl was coming in that day and if she had heard from
Gallant yet. She tells him she hasn’t since they set everything up but she
would let him know when she has. Pratt’s eyes fall on a patient and a young
lady. He asks Ray who she is but Ray thinks he is talking about the patient,
who’s name is Tito. Pratt goes over and takes a look at the wound while trying
to remain cool with the woman that is there with Tito. Pratt introduces
himself. She does also as Olivia Evans from an organization called Ceasefire.
Pratt repeats the name of the group questioningly while she goes on about how
he should have heard of them before since he dealt with street violence all
the time. Pratt asks her to tell him more but she weasels out of it by telling
the patient Theo, that they weren’t done yet. Pratt tells them he will be
back. Sam and Alex are stuck in traffic. Sam mutters that she should have
taken another route. Alex asks her what the date is and thinking he said day
she tells him it’s Wednesday. He asks again and she points to the paper that
he is looking at and tells him it is right in front of him. He tells her that
his dad, Steve is coming soon and she looks at him in shock asking if he spoke
to him. He tells her that Steve wrote him a letter. She asks him why he never
told her and Alex responds that his father wrote the letter to him. Sam starts
looking upset and questions again that Steve told Alex that he was coming to
visit him. He says ‘yeah’. Sam tries to ask him if he really thinks that his
father will come through for him this time, and Alex just looks at her with
uncertainty. Neela leads Mr. Kirkendall to an exam room. Dr. Dubenko calls out
to Neela to tell her that the Iraqi girl and her mother arrived earlier that
morning. Dubenko asks her if she has seen Gallant and Neela stops him
mid-sentence to question what he is talking about. He tells her that if she
sees him to let him know so he can introduce him to the rest of the unit staff
in plastics.

Carter and a developer discuss the future blue prints of a
possible HIV clinic. Carter seems impressed until she mentions that there will
be a fast food restaurant occupying the space next to the clinic. Donald
Anspaugh approaches to ask him what he thinks. Carter takes him aside and
voices his displease of what might be next to the clinic. Donald expresses
that it took a lot for him to get other sponsors to help fund the clinic, but
Carter tells him in not so many words to try harder. Twelve year old, Victor
Hopkins is brought in for a gunshot wound to the groin. Pratt and Sam take him
to the trauma room to treat him, but while en route Pratt asks who shot him.
Victor tells them that no one did and the gun just went off. Sam questions if
he was holding the gun but he tells them that he had it in his pocket and it
just went off. Pratt asks him why he was carrying the gun and the boy tells
him that he was just protecting himself. Neela phones Gallant’s cell phone and
leaves a message to call her when he can. Abby comes into the lounge while
Neela is hanging up and tells her that she ran away from Mr. Kirkendall. Neela
mumbles that he can wait. Abby says she heard Gallant was in Chicago and asks
her if she had heard from him. Neela lies terribly and says she has, but Abby
calls her on it saying that she never mentioned it. They talk together about
the reason Neela seems so upset. Abby tells her that her and Michael were very
close and that it shouldn’t be a surprise that Neela still has feelings for
him. Gallant sits in a cab that is sitting just outside the home of the
soldier that died right before he left Iraq. He gets out and walks to the door
and rings the doorbell. A little girl peaks through the window and he spots
her. Pratt continues to work on Victor. He notices a scar on the boy’s stomach
and asks what happened there. Victor tells him that he got into an accident at
school the year before. Sam asks if he was shot and he tells her that it was
some kid from school and that he wasn’t very popular. Victor’s mom comes in
and asks what happened. Pratt tells her that Victor was holding a 9mm gun in
his pocket and if she knew about it. She tells him no and that forces Pratt to
call her bluff. The mother looks at her son and tells him again that she
taught him how to keep the safety on. Susan stops Neela at admit to ask her
about Gallant and she can only answer no and runs away. Sam asks Susan to sign
off on some pain medication. Susan takes the chart and signs it while Sam
tells her that it was her mother that gave Victor the gun. Susan tells her to
call Social Services and kindly tells her that she had a phone call from a man
that sounded slightly agitated. She tells her that Frank took a similar call
from a man the day before. Sam tells her some mock story to stop her from
asking questions, and tells her she will take care of it. Sam walks over to
the rack and files a chart, while Luka asks her what is going on. At first
trying to dodge the question, Luka asks her again and she tells him that
nothing is wrong. Slightly frustrated with her lack of communication he tries
to walk away but Sam stops him and asks him to join her for some coffee. Neela
asks Mr. Kirkendall if he has been taking the ibuprofen and resting. He tells
her he has and that he’s been trying to rest. She asks if he understands that
what he has could take weeks to heal and he tells her he does. She then
questions why he keeps coming back and he tells her that he believes in her
and that he knows that she can fix him. Feeding into his words she surrenders
and tells him that they will do a full exam. He takes off his jacket and
untucks his dress shirt to expose a blue body suit. Slightly annoyed already
by having to see Mr. Kirkendall again she states that she will step out and
let him undress. She pulls the curtain across and stands there for mere
seconds before he tells her that he can’t do it. She pulls the curtain back
again and he begins to explain the reason behind the body suit. Neela
expresses her sympathy, but Kirkendall assumes that she must think he is
crazy. Neela denies it and states that she can do the exam over his clothes.
Sam tells Luka that she wasn’t sure what the calls were for until Alex told
her about the letter he sent their son. Luka states that he must be in Chicago
and Sam agrees hesitantly. He asks her what she wants to do and she tells him
that she won’t run away this time. She tells him not to worry about it, that
it is her problem. He looks at her and changes that to ‘their’ problem. Carter
steps into Victor’s trauma room and asks Pratt to present. Ray adds that a
social work consult has been called also because it was Victor’s gun that went
off in his own pocket. The mother tells them that her son is too good for his
own good and tells Victor to explain what happened to him the previous summer.
Victor tells them that a kid from his school shot him because of a comment he
said. Carter asks him if the kid shot him at school and he tells them it
happened while he was walking home from school. Sam comes in with the films on
where the bullet landed and they tell Victor that he needs surgery. Neela
presents her cases to Luka while Carter rushes in to ask if the rumor is true
that Gallant is back. Neela tries desperately to stay focused on what she was
trying to say but it doesn’t work. Neela makes her way out to the lunch wagon
and makes an order to a coffee and doughnut. As she waits she looks over her
shoulder and sees Gallant approaching her. She runs over and jumps into his
arms and embraces him hard.

Gallant brings over some beers and
sets them on the table. Neela expresses that she didn’t
even know he was coming. Gallant tells her that Jamila
was touch and go and that his superior sent him at the
last minute. Neela asks why he didn’t call and that
Dubenko told her he left. Michael tells her there was
something he had to do first before seeing her. While
they talk about how Gallant didn’t want to come to the
ER to answer questions from his friends, Neela’s phone
rings and she answers it. Getting back to the
conversation, her pager goes off and she turns it off so
that he can tell her about where he went before seeing
her. Visibly shaken by the story he just told, she
reaches across the table to take his hand and try to
show him that she cares. Abby enters admit stating that
Kirkendall is still waiting for Neela to return.
Kirkendall asks if they can page Neela and Abby tells
him that she will try and track her down. A man asks if
there is a ‘hot nurse around by the name of Sam’. Frank
asks for his name and he tells him its Steve. Luka comes
in from behind and tells Frank that he will deal with it
and walks him over to the side. Olivia walks by while
Pratt is on the phone. He calls out to her and asks her
if he can have a minute. He tells her about Victor and
asks her to ‘do her thing’. Still at Ike’s, Neela and
Gallant are playing a game of pool. Abby walks in and
sees Michael and embraces him. Abby looks out of place,
but states that she came by to try and get Neela to come
back but that she can handle it. Olivia talks with
Victor and his mom. She tells him that if he gives up
the gun, she will have Pratt walk him to school for a
week and each week after that, his escort will become
bigger and meaner then Pratt. Steve pushes to see Sam
and Luka tells him that she doesn’t want to see him and
he should just leave. Sam does a simple procedure on
Victor and calls Ray over to ask him something. She
calls x-ray down again saying that there could be a
fragment of the bullet somewhere else and that she
doesn’t want them operating in the wrong spot. She tells
Ray to show the films to Carter. As she is walking down
the hall, she sees Steve and Luka and turns. Steve sees
her and she turns back and tells Luka she has it.
Steve and Sam get a coffee and as
they walk back Steve asks her if things between her and
Luka are serious. She tells him they are. He asks her if
anyone has contacted her and she tells him no and asks
what he did. He tells her that he owes someone some
money and he needs to borrow some money. He explains
that he wants to spend some time with Alex because he
may not be able to see him again for a while. She tells
him it’s a bad idea and he agrees and asks if he can
still borrow the money. She asks him how much he needs
and he tells her a couple hundred dollars. Gallant and
Neela walk along a sidewalk talking. Frank approaches
Luka and tells him that with his old police officer
instincts he went and had the crime center fax over
Steve’s record and shows him the warrant for his arrest
in Colorado. Luka thanks him as Sam comes back, and she
tells him that all he wanted was some money. Luka tells
her that they need to talk about something else.
Distracted by Ray and Pratt taking Victor up to the OR,
Sam walks over to try and stop them. Ray tells her she
was right and the mother thanks her. Walking with Luka,
he shows her the fax that Frank gave him and Sam looks
on worriedly. Susan hastily interrupts asking her if Sam
can pull some overtime and even though she told Susan
she couldn’t do it, it ended up otherwise. Susan chases
Carter who tells her that he is taking a patient. She
catches up with him and invites him and Wendall to join
them for dinner. Carter tells her that sounds really
good but that things with Wendall didn’t work out. He
admits that he’s fallen off the tracks and he’s just
been trying to figure out how to get back on. Olivia
asks Pratt if he would call the office to let her know
how Victor is doing and to figure out a schedule for
walking the boy to school. He walks her out and she
tells him to stop by the office sometime. Neela brings
Gallant to her place and asks him where he is staying.
He tells her he’s planning on staying with a friend.
Luka walks home and sees Steve closing the door on his
vehicle. He tells Luka that he sent the babysitter home
and Alex was upstairs. Steve lunges at Luka and tries to
punch him but Luka ends up putting Steve onto the hood
of his car. Just before he was about to hit him, Alex
calls out his name. Pulling back he asks Alex what he is
doing with the bags in his hand. Alex explains that he
is going to Florida with Steve and that Sam approved it.
Luka tells him to go back up to the apartment while
Steve interjects that Alex is not his son. Luka tells
him that he can take anything that he wants but that
Alex was not going. He asks Steve if he really wants to
bring Alex into his problems. Knowing that Luka was
right, Steve approaches Alex to tell him that he can
come with him this time. Alex seems upset, while his
father gives him back his things. Alex gives him a hug
and walks past Luka to go back into the apartment
building. Luka watches on as Steve gets in his car.
Neela comes out dressed in a little black dress and
Michael tells her that she looks beautiful. Neela begins
turning off the lights in preparation for them to leave
but he stops her. He pulls her close to him and kisses
her. He picks her up and takes her to the bedroom.
Gallant puts a letter into an
envelope and looks over his shoulder at Neela, who is
sleeping soundly. He comes over to her and makes a
remark about how pretty her anklet is. She sees the
wound on his arm and asks what happened. He tells her
that it was from him trying to get a soldier out of
harms way. Neela and Gallant go back to the hospital
before he leaves to see Jamila and her mother. Dubenko
shakes Gallant’s hand and tells him her improvements
already made. Neela’s pager goes off and she excuses
herself. Gallant follows her out and tells her that he
doesn’t have a lot of time and Neela tells him she will
come back up in a few minutes. When she comes down to
the ER she find Pratt, and Carter working on Kirkendall.
Not understanding what is going on, Pratt tells her that
he suffered a triple A. Neela voices that she missed it
and Abby and Carter both tell her that it was easily
missed. Pratt tells her to get sterile and jump in. Alex
is busy doing homework when Sam walks in. She tells him
that she knows he is mad and that even though Steve is
still his father that him, Sam and Luka are a team now.
Obviously upset, Alex tries to escape by saying he needs
to use the bathroom, but Sam stops him and asks him to
talk to her. While telling him that it’s all right to be
sad, Alex hugs her. Neela watches on as Pratt performs
the thoracotomy. She asks Chuny to get the burn unit on
the line and Carter tells her that they don’t need the
burn unit. Pratt calls over Neela to hold onto something
and she spots Gallant just outside the doors. Pratt sees
him too and heads out to call the OR. Gallant tells him
he doesn’t have a lot of time and asks a favor of his
old friend. He pulls out the envelope that he prepared
the night before, and asks him to give it to Neela, but
to tell her not to open it unless something happens to
him. Pratt takes the letter and tells him that nothing
will. They pull out Kirkendall and Carter calls Pratt.
Neela looks at Michael with urgency, knowing that she
can’t see him off, while Carter says a hello to Michael.
As he walks with the team to the elevator, both Neela
and his eyes don’t stray. He waits until the doors close
and then turns to make his way out. Luka drops Alex off
at school. Neela looks at the envelope with her name on
it and turns to put it in a box and turns off the light.
Gallant arrives back at the base in Iraq. He opens his
bag and starts taking things out. He comes across a
letter with ‘For You’ on it. He opens it and finds
Neela’s anklet and smiles. Medevac brings in a new
patient. Neela is there to greet it and while it’s
landing she seems to have a special moment. Gallant
waits for his incoming and while looking at her anklet,
he shares in his own moment and smiles. Neela continues
to look out and smiles.
