It's the end of the graveyard (3rd) shift & Chen is exhausted standing in the doorway of the now deserted ER.  She starts walking toward Doc Magoos, sees an SUV with a few guys in it making a quick turn around & pulling away fast, but isn't concerned.  Then as she passes a parked ambulance, she sees Luka sitting on the bumper reading a book on American slang.  He tells her he's trying to improve his English but he doesn't like these words, like "putz" and "schmuck",..he mispronounces them & she laughingly corrects him.  Chen then offers to buy him breakfast at Doc Magoos & they cross the now deserted street.

Doc Magoo's door is hard to open & Luka pushes it partly in & sees a man on the floor in front of it.  They push a little more & step over him, checking his wound.  He is dead of a "gang-style" gunshot to the head.  They continue to move in slowly.  Luka sees a collapsed patron in a booth, "gray matter---he's gone".  Chen goes behind the counter heading for the kitchen & sees bloody footsteps.  Luka tells her they should call the police or 911, but she continues.  Pushing open the swinging kitchen door & following the tracks to the walk-in freezer...Luka looks into the window, opens the door, & they see 3 bloody bodies on the floor.  Luka does triage, 2 against the one wall "are gone"..Chen finds a woman who is in bad shape with a chest wound, but still alive.

Pratt & Gallant are playing a pick-up basketball game at the local YMCA.  One particular guy is using physical intimidation tactics on Pratt & they start to fight center court.  Gallant helps pull Pratt away.   This same guy is very closely guarding Pratt afterward & ends up pushing him into a side bench just behind the basket.  Pratt's palm is cut & bleeding, he wipes it off on his sleeveless T-shirt a couple of times  then lunges at the player.   Again Gallant & most of the other guys pull these 2 apart.

Luka & Chen are working with the paramedics while they bring Tina, the shooting victim, into the ER, followed by several cops desperately trying to get some info about the shooters from her.  Kerry is there assisting, but Chen is giving orders.  They ask the cops to leave until they stabilize her.  Tina is in respiratory distress& Chen tells them to take the dressing off the chest wound, & there is immediate relief.  Luka & Kerry are both impressed.

Abby is eating breakfast, reminiscing about the "good old days" when Abby & Eric were children.  Maggie admits she ran away to drink, not knowing where or how long she was gone, but leaving her kids with good people.  Abby & Maggie remember some trip  they went on & Eric's cute remarks, then Maggie starts to cry.  "I just wanted to be together with my whole family for just a little while!"  Maggie is  planning on leaving for home in Wisconsin on the bus & Abby insists on taking her there, despite Maggie's protests.  Abby offers to have Mom stay a while longer, & Maggie refuses as Abby needs the time with Carter.  Abby laughs & tells her that he "proposed"on the roof of the helicopter pad, but that he was "just joking"...Maggie is stunned & tells her that HE would be lucky to have you..."He's good for you".  Abby tries to change the subject & the phone rings.  "OH NO!  I'll come right in!"  She informs Maggie that some people were shot at Doc's, & she needs to go in.  Maggie tells her to do what she needs to,..she'll take a cab to bus station.  Abby insists & tells her to come to the ER later & she'll WILL take her...OR she could stay longer..."We're getting along really well", but Maggie declines, but looks very sad.

Back at the ER, Tina has stabilized slightly & the cops are back in the trauma room asking for any info Tina can give...how many, what did they look like...She didn't really see anything, just a big SUV with at least a couple of guys shooting.  Chen remembers the SUV, but little else,...when pressed by the cops for more detail, she thinks it was tan or gray & the only guy she barely say "may have been black".  The cops leave then while they continue to prep Tina for surgery.

Luka ends up in the room alone with her briefly & Kerry comes back & tells him to take a break.  Maybe take some more time, away from all the traumas. "But this is where you need me".  She tells him to go see a psychiatrist to help work through all the problems lately.  Luka refuses & Kerry says,"I made the appointment..go voluntarily or I'll make it mandatory."

Susan's young male testicular cancer patient, Sean, comes in again.  The nurses tease her about her admirer.  He talks about getting some meds, before the next round of chemo.  Later she sees him in the trauma room with his mother & a hospice person.  Kerry catches up to Susan at the desk & tells Susan to respect the grieving Mother's wishes & "keep your distance" from this kid.  She asks herself out loud as Kerry walks away, "What about Sean?"

Pratt & Gallant are driving to work from the YMCA in Pratt's dark SUV when they are stopped by a roadblock.  The cops previously seen at the ER questioning Tina, rudely ask them for ID.  "Pretty expensive wheels for you aren't they?"  Pratt calmly tells them who he & Gallant are as they are ordered out of the car & viscously slammed up against the side to be searched.  Pratt tells them his ID is in the glove compartment & is ignored.  The young police partner opens the hatchback & starts searching the gym bags, while Gallant protests & Pratt tells him to be quiet.  The search comes up with Pratt's blood-stained t-shirt & the older cop immediately pushes them onto the ground , face-down, placing his foot on Pratt's neck while he cuffs him.  Gallant gets similar treatment without the footwork & they are both taken down to the police station.  They are questioned separately, & their truthful answers are ignored.  They are asked it they know a place called Doc Magoo's & they both  say 'yes', & ask what happened.  By the end of the interrogation, they are cuffed to a bench together, while their story is being checked out.  Gallant is really angry & Pratt is calm.

At the ER, everyone is watching the TV coverage of the shooting & now the high-speed chase of an SUV on the highway.  A flustered Kerry complains of the  life-threatening potential of such chases & then order Jerry to fax over photographic IDs & employment verifications of Pratt & Gallant to the police station.

Luka goes to the psychiatrist's office, refuses to sit down.  The doctor asks him why he's here.."Because Kerry Weaver told me to come."  He asks Luka what's wrong, "I thought you were supposed to tell me"  The shrink tells him if he doesn't know what's wrong, how can he fix it.  "Can you fix it? My family died in the war in Croatia, I came to America and found a good relationship & ruined it.  I turned to meaningless sex, fast cars, & booze, killed one of my patients, and hurt a medical student.  I had everything & woke up one morning & it was all gone...or broken...Can you fix that?"   The stunned doc says nothing.."I didn't think so.  Be sure to tell Kerry that I was here." and leaves the office.

Pratt & Gallant are uncuffed by a black policeman who merely tells them 'your story checked out, you're free to go'.  Gallant wants to sue the arresting officer & Pratt says tells him it's pointless & to let it go.  It's all part of being a black man in the city.  They are still discussing it as they go through the metal detectors & into the ER...Pratt ultimately tells him to lose his indignation, because a black is always a SUSPECT first.  Gallant doesn't buy it , but goes to work.

Pratt sees Chen & asks how she is, admiring her bravery in the situation.  He discovers that it was her "ID" that temporarily put him in jail.  Chen reacts defensively, "Do you think I'm a racist?"  They both end up walking away mad & silent.

The ambulances roll up with the older cop that arrested them, having been involved in a traffic accident.  Pratt jumps in right away, but Gallant wants to refuse to treat him.  Kerry tells him to get in there & do his job.  The cop tells Kerry he doesn't want those two docs, & Kerry tells him he doesn't get a choice.  Pratt gets in Gallant's face & tells him the same thing & they head into the room.

Carter is at the desk,  & sees Abby walk by & reminds her they're doing sushi tonight. He is holding a ring jewelry box, & Susan sees it.  "Carter I love you too, but it just wouldn't work".  He laughs & shows her his great-grandmother's "ROCK".  Susan questions his choice of restaurants & asks when he's planning to ask Abby.  He tells her tonight & that sushi thing is just "misdirection".  Susan says "You've both had enough misdirection in your lives, Carter..Be direct, trust me!"

Abby comes out to the lobby & sees Maggie in the waiting area.  She wants to take her to the bus station, but can't to now. Maggie 'understands', go on back to work.  They both say "I love you" &  as Maggie walks away, she begins to cry.  Carter sees her & tells her there's a nurse shortage, & he'll take her to the bus station.

The wounded cop is having problems  & Kerry want to one procedure, but Gallant steps up & tells her to wait until he does one more quick ultrasound & finds some heart problem that accounts for it & eliminates the need for surgery.  "Good call Gallant" Kerry says.   Pratt tells the cop he owes an apology, not to him, but to Gallant, but the cop refuses.  He justifies the rough behavior because they get the "scum" like those robbers off the street.  The younger partner is in the room & sees all this, appears uncomfortable.  Everyone heads out to another trauma room, leaving Pratt & Gallant to follow-up.  They both stand there over him..Pratt says "I bet you're really scared"  The cop is still belligerent "Why should I be?"  Pratt gives him a BIG grin, "Because you're all alone in a room with 2 niggars with knives!"

Carter is stuck in traffic in his jeep on the way to the bus station with Maggie.  Maggie tells him that Abby told him about his proposal.  He admits it wasn't exactly the way he planned & he's going to do it right tonight & shows her the ring.  She talks about Abby, & how strong and weak she is, and how her 1st marriage had no communication at all.  Carter says they communicate & he knows about her baggage & visa versa, and 23 out of 24 hours a day he questions their relationship...but in the 24th hour he can't picture his life without her.   Maggie tells him "You can't fix her, change her..you have to accept her as she is because with all her weaknesses & flaws, she's worth it."  Carter also mentions that they haven't even talked about children, & he knows her fear of passing on the disease to them,  but then shrugs it off.

Susan is on her way out of the ER after her shift & sees Sean waiting outside for an ambulance ride home, since Mom & the hospice nurse went ahead to set things up.  She sits down beside him & asks him how he's doing.  He admits to being a little angry because he always thought he'd have more time to do all the normal things, like fall in love &  get married.  The medical transporter shows up & Susan tells him she's taking him home the long way & they walk off.  Susan takes him on a "date" to the amusement park. While they are on the ferris wheel, he tells her the story about a little Japanese girl who was dying of cancer, & believed if she folded 1000 origami cranes (symbolic of good luck) that her wish would come true,--her wish to be well.  Susan asked "how many papercuts do you have?"  ''Alot" Sean answered.  He tells her she's really hot & he's been thinking about this a long time, then gives her a gentle peck on the cheek, close to her mouth.  Susan smiles & says thank you, Sean is pleased.

It's late & Susan brings him home to an upset mother, despite the phone call to tell her about it.  Susan apologizes & ignore the angry attitude, waving goodbye to Sean as he's pushed up the stairs to his room.   She hesitates, starts for the door & his young sister bounds down the stairs, tells her to wait because Sean wants to talk to her.  She tells Susan that he likes her, not only because she's 'hot', but because of all the docs she was a friend too. Up in Sean's room, he gives her a large paper grocery bag, tells her not to open it yet.  He seems more at peace & accepting now.

Carter & Abby are in a beautiful restaurant (the only patrons) .  Abby asks why & Carter starts talking about their relationship & how he thinks it is evolving, "growing , and changing...don't you think?"  As he was speaking, he reaches into his jacket pocket to get the ring box.  Abby respondes "I don't think people ever really change at all.  What is this all about?"  Carter hesitates & puts the ring back in his pocket & tells her it's the chocolate mousse.

Chen is standing outside in the ambulance bay, ready to go home, looking very depressed, staring at the closed Doc Magoos.  Pratt comes up,,"I don't know who's had the worst day, you or me!"  They apologize to each other & hug & walk off together.

Susan is walking across a bridge & stops half-way & opens the paperbag from Sean.  It has tiny origami cranes in it & she starts dropping them one by one into the water, then smiles & dumps the whole bag out, obviously thinking of Sean.

Carter is taking a shower at Abby's while she is getting ready to make some tea.  She moves Carter's jacket off the table & the ring box falls out. She picks it up, looks inside, looks shocked, yet slightly relieved & closes the box, replacing it in the pocket.
