Carter comes home early from his scuba-diving vacation finding Abby passed out in bed with 3/4's of the Tequila bottle gone.  He snuggles in & falls asleep holding her.

Kerry is pressing Luka's apartment buzzer & as she gives up & starts to walk away, Luka appears.  She chastises him about having taken enough time to decide if he wants to practice medicine or not & now get back to work today by noon or else don't bother.  As she stalks away, a pursesnatcher grabs her purse, runs across the street, & gets hit by a car.  She hurries over to help, telling him to stay still, but he recognizes her & gets up & starts running down an alley.  "You could be seriously hurt! You ass___-!" she shouts after him.

Carter is in the kitchen, starting to clean up when Abby comes in.  He is supportive, without accusing, but is surprised that she's taken a shift today.  She wants to keep busy while she waits for the call about Eric's whereabouts.  John comforts her, holding her gently & she thanks him.

At the ER, Kerry is back & pissed--makes an announcement about the mugger's ID--wants to check anyone out who matches the description.  Susan sees Chen & asks where she was last night.  Chen was supposed to "bail out" Susan on the date with the vegetarian guy who wouldn't take 'no' for an answer.  Chen admits to "spending the night" at Pratt's & Susan wants details..They make plans to have dinner that night.

Gallant calls Susan for a consult on an elderly Alzheimer's woman who wandered away from home.  Her husband is very concerned.  She gives Gallant directions as she sees Sean, her young testicular cancer patient, in the next bed.  She checks on him,..He has symptoms of pneumonia now she orders tests.  Later when they come back showing no change is his lung tumors despite 2 rounds of chemo, she does not 'sugar-coat' it.  She gets teased by the nurses & Chen about her "boyfriend",...Chen calls her "Mrs. Robinson" & implies things about 'younger men'.."Not when they have cancer"

Chen ashamedly admits, "Oh yeah, sometimes I forget they are sick".

Pratt is in ride-along with Paramedic team (male & female).  They answer a call for a frozen homeless man in a rental car.  Pratt starts to help, but is told to just observe.  When they think the man is dead, the paramedics ask Pratt to pronounce him & they'll call the coroner & move on.

Gallant tells Kerry that her purse-snatcher may be in trauma room, just as she's erasing Kovac name from the board.  She goes back there & it is him, asking for help for his injured hand.  She says "Hey creep, where's my purse?" He denies knowing her, pulls out the IV & runs for the doors.  People scramble, but she just used her cane & hits the automatic door closing button & the heavy door hits him in the face, knocking him out cold.  She just stands there & smiles.

Carter, now sleeping alone on the couch, is awakened by Maggie's pounding on the door.  He lets her in, & she is surprised Abby went to work.  She insists on talking to her, to get her to help her expedite finding Eric.

Kerry & Abby take care of a frightened, drugged out kid on crystal meth.  His 2 friends are still high, make jokes & leave.  He asks if he'll need a transplant, & Abby says yes,  Your Brain! He's to be put on a cardiac monitor for observation,

Just then a screaming mother with her hurt child, Jared,  in her arms comes running into the ER.  Abby gets him into a room & calls for Kerry.  The mother back over him by mistake when he was coming out for another hug & kiss.  He  is not responding to anything.  Just then Abby looks up & sees Maggie & John at the trauma room door.  She shakes her head "NO", but then can't face it & drops everything to run into the next empty, dark room, as John comes in.  Kerry tells Carter to step up & help now.  Abby comes  in later while they are testing Jared to see if he can breath on his own. He can't & Kerry informs the mother that he's brain dead.  She insists that he is kept "alive" long enough for the father to get there to say goodbye.  Kerry agrees to 'do the best we can".

Maggie grabs Carter as soon as she sees him & wants to find Abby & convince her to go with her to help 'push' the  search along.  Carter goes to find Abby & tells her she has to deal with her mother, not him.  He & Abby are called into Jared's room by EKG alarms.  They shock him to bring him back & the grieving mother stays with him, waiting for Dad.  Carter & Abby go back into the other room & he holds her & tells her that Eric is alive.

At the admit desk, Susan tells Gallant that some "swabs"  for a patient are lost, & he needs to redo & stay down in the lab while they're processed.  He reluctantly does so.  The Lab doctor is very terse & tells him to just put it with the rest of them.  Gallant goes over to the counter next to a guerney with a body bag.  It starts to move & he finally gets the technicians attention "Should it be moving around like that?"  She calmly says, 'No, Don't just stand there, unzip the bag!"

Susan confers with Sean's mom about convincing him to go home & quit fighting, because he put himself through so much just for her.  The mother  knows he admires & respects Susan's opinion. Susan feels it's Sean's decision.  When she does talk to him, he knows his mom put her up to it.  He's not ready to give up yet, so without saying what she would do, she tells him to "fight with everything you've got".

Pratt comes in with the paramedic team with a pregnant woman in labor who obviously likes him.."Don't let him go,..He thinks pregnant women are sexy!!"  Chen takes care of her, but she is angry at Pratt.  Pratt asks her to stay overnight at her place due to the exterminator coming.  She says she has a 'thing' tonight.  "More secrets?" She then tells him she's going out to dinner with Susan.

As Abby steps out of the little boy's trauma room, Maggie corners her & then follows her to the bathroom, where Abby barricades herself in a stall.  All the while, Maggie is telling her about who she's spoken to & where they should go to expedite finding Eric. Abby busts out & tells Maggie she's NOT going because Eric is dead.  He committed suicide.

Chen walks into the doctors lounge & finds Harms (the female paramedic) & Pratt swapping warstories & laughing.  Harms takes the hint from Chen's cold attitude & leaves.  Pratt is oblivious & asks about the pregnant mom they brought in.  When Chen tells him it was a big boy, he says "Oooh, that's a keeper"  This sets her off & she & Pratt argue again.  He is surprised that she just had the baby recently, "I just didn't expect you to be a mother".  She counters with, "I was pregnant & had a baby, I am NOT a mother".  She starts to leave, 'glad to know where you stand'.  He follows telling her if she wants to feel guilty go right ahead!

Suddenly Susan calls Pratt & the male paramedic to come meet someone 'you've met before' & pulls the curtain.  There sits the frozen, homeless 'deadman'.  Gallant tells them his blood alcohol level was 322, antifreeze level.."you have to be warm first to be dead!"  She orders Pratt to give him a warm bath.

Jared's father finally gets to the ER & Carter informs him of the brain dead condition.  He hugs his wife, tries to deny it, & asks to see him.  As Abby comes out of that room, Maggie grabs her & tells her that she's not ready to 'bury him' yet & she 's going to Cleveland, with or without her.  Can the El take her to Midway?  Abby gives her directions & she leaves, promising to call.

Kovac comes in late &puts his name back up on the board.  Gallant comes running to get him, as the young teen with the drug overdose is seizing & has a elevated temp.  Kovac takes a brief look at him, his temp is 107.5 degrees, & picks  him up, taking him outside the ER & putting him in the snowbank to quickly cool him down.  They throw alcohol on him too & just as Kerry comes out to find out what's happening, his fever is down to 104.  Luka tells her he saved his brain, & body organs & his life.   "Well, it's a good thing you decided to come in!"

As Jared dies, his parents beside him, with no extraordinary measures, Abby gets a call on her cellphone from the FAA.  She goes into trauma room  to take it, as Carter watches.  He comes in & asks what happened.  Eric's plane was found intact, tied down, with no sign of him or any damage to him.  He's gone into hiding for a while.  John hugs Abby &she kisses him.  "I guess Maggie was right after all!?"he says.  She says she'll be right back & runs to the El to tell Maggie before she gets on the train.  They go to Doc Magoo's for coffee with a map to find where Eric landed.  Maggie wants to go & search for him with Abby.  But Abby tells her she doesn't get to do anything...just wait. "Welcome to the outside of the disease!"

At the ER desk, Pratt apologizes to Chen for making assumptions & judging her.  She accepts & shows him a picture of her son, which surprises Pratt because he is half black.  Just then, Harms comes out of the doctor's lounge, dressed to kill, "are you ready to go to dinner?"  Chen immediately freezes him out.  He explains that since she had her thing with Susan, he invited the team to dinner.  "I only see Harms" notes Chen.  They both walk off in opposite directions mad.

Chen, now in the doctors lounge where Susan is sitting,  complains about Pratt.  "You forgot the #1 rule of dating--Men are scum!" says Susan.  Meanwhile, Pratt is ranting about women & relationships to Carter, until he asks "Why are you telling me this?"  Pratt says "I have no idea" & leaves .  Luka greets Carter, "I thought you were on vacation" & Carter spars with "I thought you'd given up being a doctor!"

Carter's leaving now, as is  Kerry & she tells Luka to stay since he missed half his scheduled shift.."Whatever" he  responds.

Kerry is at home reading a book, snuggled up on the couch, & Sandy is waiting for the take out guy deliver dinner.  She turns on the TV & sits down at the other end of the couch.  Kerry turns off the TV & asks her about maybe trying again now.  Sandy is agreeable until she understand that Kerry means for Sandy to carry the baby this time.  She refuses due to her job demands & that she never  wanted to.  Kerry tries to convince her with some tears & tells her how wonderful it is as the child grows, but Sandy just gets more uncomfortable & leaves the room, & Kerry is sitting there crying.

Carter is up on the roof & finds Abby, finally.  She'd been hiding, smoking & thinking.  Carter sits down facing her & she says "Run Carter, run as fast as you can!"  He assures her he's not going anywhere, no matter how nuts her family is, or how negative Abby is, because he ignores the negative half of what she says.  He asks her why she couldn't rejoice for a few seconds when she found out Eric was alive?  She admits to forgetting to thank him for all his extraordinary support  & then does.  He tells her she should just relax & let someone love her & just as a helicopter noisily flies overhead he says "I WANT TO MARRY YOU!"  Abby is shocked & not sure she heard it , "WHAT???"  He repeats himself & smiles.  Abby just stares with an almost smirk on her face.

OSCAR WINNER SALLY FIELD, ELI WALLACH AND PATRICK FUGIT ('ALMOST FAMOUS') GUEST-STAR-- As Dr. Carter (Noah Wyle) returns from his scuba trip, Abby (Maura Tierney) veers disturbingly close to a breakdown in her attempt to cope with a multitude of problems, Dr. Weaver (Laura Innes) confronts the man who stole her purse and Dr. Pratt (Mekhi Phifer) accompanies paramedics -- and is later surprised by what happens to a comatose homeless man found on the street. As Abby awaits word on her missing flyboy brother and deals with her needy mom (Oscar-winning guest star Sally Field), she and Carter try to keep a brain-dead boy alive in order to comfort his grieving parents. Elsewhere, Dr. Kovac (Goran Visnjic) finally arrives at the hospital in the nick of time to aid an overdosed teen while Dr. Lewis (Sherry Stringfield) helps an elderly man (guest star Eli Wallach, "The Magnificent Seven") whose wife suffers from Alzheimer's and hypothermia. Lewis is also flattered by her teenaged admirer (guest star Patrick Fugit, "Almost Famous") -- which doesn't help sugarcoat the grim news for her young cancer patient. Ming-Na also stars.
