Dr. Corday is with a patient named Mr. Willow.  He is eaten up with cancer and in a lot of pain.  He is surprised that nothing was removed doing an exploratory surgery.  He wants more of his questions answered, but she insists that he speak with an oncologist.  He persists to know what his chances are and she tells him that he has less than a ten percent, five year survival chance with chemo.  You can see in her face that this is difficult to discuss, as memories of Mark must be flooding her mind.  Romano is on the phone outside the room arguing with his insurance company.  He is surprised to see that she was only in the room with her patient for ninety seconds.  He tells her that she will need to get her own complaint box, and she assumes he is referring to her patients.  He is actually referring to her student, Paul Nathan.  Romano calls him the martini shaker, but Elizabeth doesn't pay him any attention.  She tries to explain to him that being on rotations will be hard for him with his disease.  Romano is concerned that the ACLU will get wind of this and make trouble, so he tells her to make sure that he doesn't kill anyone.

A girl named Sara Paspalas is brought in by a cop after being found unconscious on the El train.  Abby and Harkins are tending to her.  Harkins thinks that it may be drug related and orders a tox screen.  Abby tells her that maybe a head CT, spinal tap, and other tests may be good also.  Jerry tells Abby that Weaver called to reschedule their meeting to 1:00pm about the nurse's petition.  Abby's says okay, then asks, What petition?".  Abby's brother Eric walks up and she seems surprised to see him.  He has rented an airplane and flown to Chicago with a girlfriend, which surprises her even more.  He introduces her to Jody, who is feeling sick, and is the reason they came to the ER.  Eric tells Jody that Abby is his big sister and comments that she looks more like his little sister.  Abby asks her what seems to be the... (Jody throws ups on Abby's shoes and Abby finishes her question)...problem?

A thirty-six year-old man is brought in with three gun shot wounds.  Chen is tending to him as he is brought in.  He is a rough biker looking guy and has lost a lot of blood, but his mouth is working fine.  Malik comes to assist Chen and he tells them to keep the chocolate homo away from him.  Abby and Eric discuss what is going on and how old Jody is.  She tells him that she is barely out of her teens.  Eric tells her that Jody is an aspiring writer.  She also wonders how he can afford a plane and he tells her that he is just renting it.  She is also curious about how he has already got time off when he has just arrived at the base.

Dr. Corday and Dr. Chen are still working on their gun-shot victim.  He tells Corday that he wants the American doctor and she tells him that Chen is the American doctor.  Dr. Chen has to put a syringe in his chest to remove blood that has gathered around his heart.  They waited until he was sedated before doing this though.  Harkins comes in to the room asking Abby if she has seen Sara.  Abby tells her to look for her, that she is busy with a patient.  Harkins leaves the room and Nathan comes in to get Dr. Corday for another patient.  She follows him in to where Carter and Haleh are treating a woman named Alison DeLuca, who is only twenty-six years-old and is in respiratory distress.  She has an oxygen tank with her, but it is empty.  They see that she has visible scars and must of had some sort of surgery.  Elizabeth tells Nathan that she heard about his conversation with Dr. Romano.  She tells him that he needs to follow protocol and follow the chain of command when addressing concerns about her.  He tells her that he will try, but doesn't seem to care.  Carter tells them to be quiet as he listens to Alison's lungs.  She has the lungs of an eighty-year-old chain smoker and Corday asks Nathan what this could be.  He answers her and tells her that she is drowning in her own mucus.

Back in the trauma room where Chen, Malik and Abby are tending to the gun shot victim, Haleh comes in.  Abby asks her what the petition is all about.  Haleh tells her that she signed it just like all of the other nurses.  Malik tells them that he didn't sign it.  Abby wonders why she wasn't told about it, and Haleh tells her that they didn't think should would do anything about it because of her previous relationship with Luka.  Pratt comes in and wants to know why there is a man with three gun shot wounds and why he wasn't called.  Chen calls him a trauma queen.  The man has come to and is upset to see what Dr. Chen has done.  When she did the procedure, she messed up a tattoo that he was fond of.  He threatens to cut her up for doing it and this spooks Dr. Chen.  Pratt asks her how she is and she walks away.

Dr. Corday, Carter and Nathan are finishing assessing their patient with breathing problems.  Nathan wants to follow up on her being placed on the transplant list.  Dr. Corday has other plans for him and he seems to not be interested.  She tells him that he needs to be at an M and M at three and she leaves him in the room with Carter.  Carter sees Nathan's frustration and Carter assures him that she is a good teacher.  Nathan replies, "that's what they keep telling me".

Abby sees Jody to see how she is doing.  She asks her where Eric is and Jody tells her that he went out for a smoke.  Abby goes to look for him and runs in to Luka.  She tells him that she is being sent to the principal's office because he can't get along with the nurses and his attitude problem.  Luka is not bothered by it.  Harkins is still looking for Sara and Abby heads outside to find Eric.  Susan is getting a young man as he is being taken out of the ambulance.  He was hit by a car in a skateboarding accident.  Abby asks her if she has seen Eric and Susan tells her that she pointed him to the news stand for a pack of cigarettes.  He is also going to pick her up some lottery tickets.  The jackpot is up to eighty-seven million.  Abby tells her that she has a better chance of being hit by a car.  The young man takes offense to the comment.

Abby catches up to Eric and he joking is embarrassed that she found him buying a tabloid and not by the cigarettes.  Abby wonders why he has started smoking at his age?  Eric tells her that she has been smoking off and on since she was eight.  Abby asks him more personal questions and tells him that at least Jody isn't pregnant.  She wonders what is going on with her brother.  A man hollers down for some help.  Abby yells for a gurney and arrives to find Sara passed out on the stairs leading up to the El train.  She is also seizing.  The guy who found her tells them that maybe he could kiss her to get her to wake up.

Carter checks on Alison.  They discuss her condition as Nathan listens on.  They have called her father and he should be on his way.  She is allergic to some medicine that could help her.  She has pneumonia and this is the fifth time this year.  She tells Carter that it is a new record for her.  She wants to sign a D.N.R.  Nathan looks on and is confused as to why.  Her liver is sick and her lungs are shredded.  Nathan tells her that antibiotics will make her feel better.  She tells him not to be offended.  She is ready to die.

Corday, Luka and Abby are working on Sara.  She is still seizing and not doing well at all, but she finally stops seizing.  She has cut her head when she fell down.  Carter comes in to get Elizabeth to witness a DNR, but she tells him in a moment.  Elizabeth shows Harkins how to do an intubation on Sara, as Nathan watches on from the nest exam room.  Jerry has stocked up on lottery tickets and asks Abby if she is interested in buying one for two bucks.  She tells them that they are selling them across the street for only one buck and he replies that his have his special numbering sequence.  Carter comes down the hall and sees Eric and Jody smooching.  Abby has witnessed it also.  Carter tells her that Jody seems to be feeling better.  Abby replies that she should after haven been given one hundred and twenty-five milligrams of Demerol.  Carter has learned that Jody is almost twenty-one and that she and Eric are in love.  Chen asks Jerry to call her when the labs for Fay Graham come down.  He offers to sell her some lottery tickets and she reminds him that re-selling lottery tickets is a felony.

A police officer and his partner come in to the ER.  Her hand has been lacerated from the an earlier shoot out.  Jerry reminds Abby that she is late for her meeting with Weaver, so Abby asks Nathan to take a look at it, since he is on a surgical rotation.  Carter sees that Mr. DeLuca has arrived.  He wonders why she has not been placed on a ventilator.  Carter tells him that she has pneumonia and liver problems.  This makes him wonder again why she is not on the ventilator.  She must be suffering he tells him.  Carter tells him that she has signed a DNR.  He tells Carter that she is depressed and is just a kid, Carter reminds him that she is twenty-six and is dying.  He tells Carter that they are all dying.  She is in a lot of pain and is allergic to the medicines that can help her.  Her dad wants her to get the transplant and Carter asks him why?  So that she will have to suffer through all of this again?  The father replies that if he doesn't want to fight for her, then he will find a doctor who will.

Elizabeth watches as Nathan sutures the officer's hand.  This is the officer's first week on the job and she is concerned about her career choice.  Elizabeth hints to Nathan by saying, "If it's not what you were expecting there's no shame in exploring other options."  Harkins comes in to get Dr. Corday and she goes with her to the hall.  Nathan comes after her and asks her about the care.  She tells him that she should see a social worker for her stress and Nathan gets upset.  Corday tells him that he needs to start thinking like a doctor if he plans on being one.  Nathan can't understand why she is being so cold with her patients.  Harkins continues to explain what she has found.  She suspects that Sara was given some kind of date rape drug.

Abby arrives at her meeting late.  Mary Cain, Romano and Weaver have begun without her.  They have viewed the petition against Dr. Kovac and see that only the female nurses have signed and that Abby's name was not on the petition.  Mary comments about Abby's previous relationship with Luka and Abby gets offended.  Romano comments, "So it's true. You are all suckers for the accent".  She wants a full investigation.

Carter sees that Nathan is in the room with Alison.  She seems to be feeling a little better.  Nathan has given her flowers.  He tells Alison that there is hope.  Abby has come down to speak with Luka before Kerry can get to him.  She runs in to Eric and gets stopped.  She watches as Weaver gets to Luka first.  Eric is wanting to stay with Abby while he and Jody are in town.  Abby can't listen and watch what Weaver is doing at the same time.  He asks her for the keys to her apartment.  Weaver is done with Luka and he heads in to the lounge.  Weaver asks Corday to do a rape exam on the patient, they are down one ER Attending now.  Abby runs after Luka in the lounge.  Luka tells her that he was suspended pending investigation.

Corday, Abby and Harkins do a rape exam on Sara, while she is still unconscious.  Abby doesn't think that it is a good case for Harkins to be doing.  Chuny comes in and tells them that Sara's father has arrived.  Abby tells her not to let him come in.  They conclude that Sara was indeed raped.  Corday sees Nathan in the room with Alison still.  She jokingly asks Carter if they are dating now.  Carter doesn't think that Nathan will make a good surgeon.  Sara's father asks Corday what is going on with his daughter.  She takes him aside.

Pratt's shift is over and he is on his way out.  He sees Jing-Mei and stops to check on her.  She is working on charts and acts as if she is still shaken up about her patient's threat earlier.  Pratt tells her to leave with him.  Haleh and Abby discuss the petition as they are in the drug lockup together.  Haleh likes Luka, but she has to stick with the nurses.  She tells Abby that doctors come and go, but that it is the nurses that makes the ER run.  Corday goes to get Alison and move her to another room.  There are multiple victims coming in and they need to clear a space.  People were hit by a car while standing in line to buy lottery tickets.  Nathan is still encouraging Alison.  Harkins comes to tell Corday that Sara has come to.

They remove the tube from her throat and ask her what she remembers.  She remembers being on the train with Pat and Andy and they were heading to the city.  They tell her that they found a specific drug in her system and she makes it clear to them and her father that she doesn't do drugs.  Corday gets ready to tell her about the rape and Sara's father asks to speak with Corday out in the hall.  He does not want Corday to tell her what happen.  She doesn't remember it and he doesn't want her mind damaged from the trauma.  Corday tells him that she may have AIDS and needs to be told.  He assures Corday that they will seek treatment.  Corday gets called away to treat a man who was in the lottery accident.  He has a foreign body protruding from his forehead.  He tells them that he was next in line for the lottery ticket.  He is anxious to get the winning number, but he will need to have surgery.  Abby has a phone call from Eric and she speaks to him over the speaker.  He is wondering where her blender is because he wants to make a milkshake.  Corday tells Abby to get off of the phone.  He tells John hi and he wants the four of them to go dancing after work.  Nathan comes to get Carter.  Corday tells him to discharge her with a fresh oxygen tank, but Nathan tells them that she wants a consult with the transplant team.  Carter can't believe his ears.  He sees her father standing in the hall very happy.  He tells Carter that Nathan convinced her not to sign the DNR.  Carter tells him that she has already signed it.  Mr. DeLuca tells him that she can just un-sign it.  Carter tells him that she is still not a good candidate for the transplant.  Carter speaks to Nathan about this.  Carter is very displeased about what he has done.  Nathan mentions stem cell research and this makes Carter even more angry.  He tells him that he has given them false hope.  The flowers were an interesting touch he tells Nathan.  Carter realizes that Nathan is doing this out of his own need to find a cure for his own disease.

Carter speaks with Corday about what happened.  He would prefer her to keep him up on the surgical ward.  If he is to come down to the ER, he would like her to directly supervise him.  Jerry is excited because they are about to announce the lottery jackpot winner.  Carter heads to the lounge where he finds Abby.  She is concerned about Eric.  She notices that he is acting weird, but Carter hasn't noticed.  This is because he doesn't know him as well as Abby does.  She practically raised him.  She is concerned that he might be bi-polar.  They calculate his age and decide that he has past the age.  Carter caresses her and comforts her.

Jing-Mei and Pratt are getting frisky at his place.  All of a sudden, the apartment door opens up and Leon comes in.  He is excited about having the winning lottery ticket.  Jing-Mei gets up and rushes to pull her shirt back down over her torso.  Pratt takes Leon out into the hall, while pulling up his pants and zipping them.  Leon tells Pratt that Jing-Mei looked HOT!

Kerry catches Abby on her way out  and tells her that Dr. Kovac will be back tomorrow.  He is going to go through some counseling (probably like the sexual harassment class that they took in "Secrets & Lies").  Apparently Abby's opinion didn't count and she is fed up with being nurse manager, but she doesn't quit.  Elizabeth tells Abby to discharge Sara and Abby can't understand why she isn't going to tell her the truth about what really happened.  Nathan listens on as Corday explains that she is a minor and that she has to respect her father's wishes.  Abby tells Corday that she will have to discharge her and Abby leaves.  Corday looks over to Nathan and congratulates him.  He will be on call tomorrow night for 32 hours.  He had better go home and get some rest.  She then goes in and sutures the head wound on Sara.  Corday decides to tell her what really happened.  As she is telling Sara that she was raped after being drugged, Sara interrupts her.  She cannot believe that they did a pelvic exam on her while she was unconscious.  She tells her that she wasn't raped and that she took the drugs herself.  She does that sort of thing every weekend and it makes all the boys like her better than any other girl.  Elizabeth can't believe it.

Carter, Abby, Eric and Jody are at a Navy Pier where some sort of party is taking place.  They are sitting around the table discussing childhood stories.  Most of them are embarrassing stories about Abby.  While Abby asks about how Eric is able to be off of work, Jody mentions that he is there job hunting.  Abby is once again surprised, but Eric tries to embarrass Abby again, so they get up and go line dance.  This leaves Jody and Carter alone at the table.  Jody can see that Abby and Carter have a good relationship.  She shows interest in the song and convinces Carter to go line dance with the rest.  Carter seems to know what he is doing when it comes to country line dancing.  He seems to be having a good time, as does the rest.

Corday is on her way up to the El train platform and she sees Nathan sitting there waiting for the train.  She cordially tells him hello.  She tells him that he did well getting his patient Alison places on the transplant list.  This is a hard thing to do.  She sees that he is shaky and asks him if he has taken his medicines.  He has not been taking things as scheduled because of his work.  The train pulls in and Elizabeth heads toward the doors.  She sees that Nathan is not getting up and realizes that he is unable to.  She asks if she can help him, but he tells her that he will just wait and catch the next one.  His meds will kick in soon.

TV Guide Review

November 7, 2002: One Can Only Hope: Tensions between the nurses and doctors hit a fever pitch as a petition against Luka leaves the ER short-staffed; Abby's brother returns with some all-too-familiar manic tendencies; Chen gives in to Pratt's less-than-tender loving care after a violent patient gets under her skin; and Nathan irks — then impresses — Corday and Carter by talking a terminal patient out of giving up.
