Luka has had company during the night.  Abby has been tending to the new fish aquarium that has been placed in the new ER waiting area.  The fish she has been taking care of have been dieing.  All of the security features have been installed and the "regular" patient's are curious about the change.  Abby tells one that it has been setup to keep them from killing them.  Carter asks Abby about the girl's night out and she assures him that everything was on the up and up.  Susan has come in to work with a bad hangover from the girl's night out and Elizabeth is telling her of a hangover remedy.  The ER staff are anxious to get the TV on because Dr. Kerry is out in the ambulance bay with two local TV reporters demonstrating giving a flu shot.  She explains the procedure and then gives the female anchor her shot.  As she finishes telling them how easy and simple the procedure is, she gives the male anchor his shot.  Kerry has a strange look on her face when the female anchor asks what the second needle is for.  Susan is watching this on TV sees that Kerry neglected to give the guy his own shot with his own needle.

Pratt is flirting with Mona, who is covering the new triage area.  Abby comes to get Melody Shepherd to be seen and her son begins to cry when she leaves.  The boy's father gets on to him for crying like a baby and Gallant asks the man if everything is okay.  He doesn't like seeing the man being verbally abusive to his son.  The man replies that it would be better if they hadn't been waiting for over three hours.  Pratt watches on as Gallant takes verbal abuse from the man.  Jing-Mei is interested in taking some self-defense instruction after having been held by gunpoint in last weeks episode.  Carter tells Gallant that his girlfriend is waiting to see him.  It is Stella Willis and she is back with another ailment.  She is having chest pains and is having a hard time breathing.  Kerry gives an HIV test to the two reporters who she previously gave the flu shot to with the same needle.  They do not get along as well as they appear in front of the camera.  Kerry is concerned about the lack of nurses scheduled.  She wants Randi to call Haleh to come in and discuss the nurse shortage with her, but she quickly learns that she resigned as nurse manager back in September.  She then learns that the nurse who replaced her as nurse manager resigned last week.  Kerry wants to know why she hadn't known about it and Susan tells her that it is because she hasn't been around much lately since Kerry has been tending to Dr. Romano's job.  Kerry asks Abby to come by her office later and Abby replies, "Dr. Romano's office?"

Gallant checks out Stella and Carter comes to assist him.  Stella tells Carter that he looks like Howdy Doody and she hates Howdy Doody.  Gallant wants to monitor Stella's heart and Carter tells him to call cardiology to come assess her.  Susan tends to an elderly man named Thomas, whose wife is being taken care of by Dr. Corday.  They were in a car accident and she has injured her spleen.  Thomas has a cut on his head and let's Susan quickly know that he is not retired.  Carter sees Susan and asks her how her hangover is doing.  During the conversation, Carter asks about Abby and her drinking.  Susan had no idea that Abby was an alcoholic.  Abby brings some x-rays to Carter and then she and Susan have a talk.  Susan tells her about Carter's concern and she Abby tells her that she didn't mention the drinking problem to her because she didn't want her to feel weird about it.  They head to the ladies room where they discuss it more.  Someone in the bathroom stall drops a syringe on the floor.  Abby and Susan look to see the door open and Dr. Weaver comes out.  Weaver looks as if she has been caught doing something, but only replies, "Susan....Abby."

Abby and Susan wonder what Kerry was up to.  A intoxicated man named Phil is waiting to be seen.  Abby tells Susan that her being an alcoholic is just something she doesn't like to talk about.  Susan tells her that they are friends and if she wants to talk, she knows where to find her.  If she doesn't, then that is okay too.  Abby tells her thanks.  Dr. Kayson has come down to assess Stella.  He tells Gallant that it is only costochondritis and that she doesn't get much exercise.  Gallant thinks that it is much more serious and Kayson tells him that when he becomes an actual doctor, he can make his own diagnosis.  Pratt walks in and Kayson is surprised to see that he is still working there.  Gallant wants Stella to continue being monitored in cardiology.

Kayson asks Carter why his students won't take his advice.  Carter tells him that they are just thorough.  Abby comes to get Carter.  She tells him that she has spoken with Susan.  Before they can discuss it further, Luka asks for Abby's help on a young girl with a Urinary tract infection.  Carter goes to assist Pratt with a man covered in tattoos.  His name is Felix and he has been unconscious.  Pratt thinks that the guy will be okay, because he is tough and is in the military.

Corday needs her patient's husband, Thomas, to sign a form for his wife to have surgery.  He tells her that he can't, his wife usually takes care of stuff like that.  Margaret is coming to and Dr. Corday explains to her that she needs surgery.  Margaret tells her that she can't leave her husband long enough for that because he has Alzheimer's.  Carter and Gallant tend to Felix who has some kind of toxin in his body causing him to be extremely ill.  They asks his military buddies what all they have been doing and if they have played some kind of trick on him.  They take offense to their questions.  They are all rangers and are on leave.  Gallant asks them about their time overseas and if they have seen any action.  They inadvertently put Gallant down for being in medical school and not fighting for his country.

Luka and Abby tend to the eleven-year-old girl with the urinary tract infection.  Her name is Marlene Wilco and her mother Janet is with her.  They learn from her mother that the girl has them often and that they are visiting from Milwaukee.  Luka flirts with the mother.  Chuny asks Abby for a weekend off and Abby wonders why she is asking her.  Jerry is busy making an origami swan.  Abby tells him that they can put it on the refrigerator, right next to his report card.  He tells her, "Thanks mom".  Abby chats with Marlene while her mother goes to the cafeteria.  She learns that Marlene's parents are divorcing and that they came to Chicago to visit the aquarium.  Abby tells her that she should have said something sooner and wheels her off.

The rangers ask Gallant about the stuff around their buddy's mouth.  They had to put charcoal in his system to try and remove some of the toxins.  Felix comes to and is a little disoriented.  He asks if Elena is there and we learn that he cannot see.  Abby has wheeled Marlene to the new aquarium in the waiting area.  Abby is cleaning out more dead fish.  She asks Abby if she is a good nurse and Abby tells her yeah.  Abby also talks to her about living with only a mom.  Susan is searching for something and sees the young girl's mother walking out of a supply closet.  She then sees Luka walking out right behind her.  He is tucking in his shirt and getting his clothes back in order.

Susan tells Abby about finding Luka and Janet Wilco fooling around in the closet.  Susan tells Abby that she should speak to him about it.  Carter is being quiet with Abby, as if he is upset with her.  Gallant discusses with Carter and Pratt about Felix.  He thinks he may have had an overdose of Quinine.  It is an anti-malaria drug given in the military.  It is undetectable in  a tox screen.  Pratt asks Carter if he wants him to speak with Felix about it.  Carter tells Pratt that Gallant can handle it.  Pratt turns to Gallant and says, "Give it your best shot, Mikey!"

Susan walks up to Luka as he is flirting with Janet Wilco.  She needs to speak with him, so Luka excuses himself.  Susan asks him if it is possible to discharge the girl.  It looks like a normal U.T.I. and there is not since in keeping them around.  Luka is concerned that it might be a little more serious and wants to wait to the test results come back.  Susan thinks that he is just wanting to keep them around long enough to flirt more with the mother.  Susan gets on to him for his conduct and then walks off.  Luka then gets the lab results back and sees that the girl's condition is in fact serious.

Felix asks Gallant if his girl has called.  His sight is coming back, but Gallant tells him that he is still concerned.  He asks Felix about the drug.  Felix explains that when he came home, his girl was not around.  She had waited on him for a long time and must have gotten tired of waiting.  She apparently fond someone else.  This made him suicidal.  Felix tells Gallant that he is special forces and if it got out about what he had done, it would ruin his career.  Gallant tells him that he will keep it quiet, but he needs to seek help.  Felix tells him that he will be okay this time.

Luka comes in to the exam room, where Abby, Marlene and her mother are.  He explains to them about Marlene's condition and tells them about her kidney's failing.  The mother is concerned and Marlene doesn't seem to be worried.  Abby rolls her to the elevator and she and her mother go for more test.

Carter comes to get Abby to go with him to the drug lockup.  She discusses plans for the night, but Carter doesn't seem to show any interest.  Abby replies, "If she gets to choose between backing off and butting in, she would rather choose butting in if it means that she and Carter can have a mutual discussion.  Abby heads to the admit. desk where she learns that she has been appointed the new nurse manager.  Jerry asks Carter if he and his girlfriend are fighting and Carter takes Jerry's origami and shreds it.  Gallant sees a guard outside of Felix's room.  Jerry tells him that he is suicidal and they are taking him up to psych.  Gallant asks to see his chart and then asks where Pratt is.  Gallant finds Pratt and Pratt says the chart said accidental when it was clearly a suicide attempt.  Pratt was just trying to protect Gallant from a malpractice suit.  Pratt tells Gallant that he should stick up for himself and not be bullied around.  Abby calls for Gallant, Stella is crashing.  She had unstable angina and Abby asks why she wasn't on a monitor.  Stella is on the floor and Carter is picking her up.  She is in full arrest, so Carter tells Jerry to page Kayson.  By the time he arrives, Stella has been down for twelve minutes.

Corday comes down to tell Thomas how his wife is doing.  He is confused and really doesn't understand what has happened.  She tells him that she has been put on a breathing machine and will have to be there a while.  It has now been thirty-nine minutes since Stella has been down.  Kayson tells them to call it.  They ask if she had any family and Gallant tells them no.  He begins to argue with Kayson for missing the sings.  Gallant argues and Kayson tells him easy son.  Gallant tells him that he is not his son.  Carter tells Pratt to take Gallant for a walk.  When they leave the room, Carter tells Kayson that he should have been more thorough.  Outside of the exam room Pratt speaks with Gallant.  He tells him, "Mikey, what you did in there was being a man".  Gallant, still upset, swings his fist back and punches Pratt in the face and Pratt falls to the floor.  Gallant tells him not to call him Mikey.

Susan and Carter check on Pratt.  He seems to be in good spirits considering.  Gallant is in the room with Stella.  Weaver asks Susan to get the nurse's schedule for Abby to work on.  Abby tells Weaver that she was hall monitor for a day in fifth grade, but they fired her for selling hall passes to the kids.  Kerry tells her that she has matured since then.  The position comes with a raise she tells her, but Abby doesn't care.  Kerry tells her that the job is hers if she likes it or not.  Abby inquires about the amount of the raise and Kerry tells her that she will have to get back to her on that.  A cactus has arrives for Kerry from Romano.  The card reads, "Your fifteen minutes is up".

Carter checks in on Gallant, who is standing beside Stella's lifeless body.  He tells him that Gallant wants him to come punch him on the other side of the face to even it out.  Gallant doesn't even crack a smile.  Gallant tells Carter that Stella has been alone every since her daughter died in a car crash years earlier.  Carter tells Gallant that Kayson knows what happened in the room.  Gallant says that Kayson was right, he backed down and he should have fought harder for Stella.  Carter tells him that you eventually work through it.  Gallant asks when?  Carter tells him as soon as you killed your first patient.  Gallant says, I've done that.  Carter tells him no, that he hasn't.

Luka tells Abby that Marlene's ultrasound test is back and it is not good.  Abby asks him for the moral of the story and he replies, "Never sleep with the patient's mother" and Abby adds, "At least not until the labs are back".  Luka feels bad about the whole situation.  He now has to tell the mother about the daughter's renal failure.  Abby follows after Carter as he is heading home from his shift.  Abby tells him that she thought he was working later, but he tells her that Deb is covering the shift change.  She wants to know who is angry at who.  Carter tells her that he is not angry.  She follows him to the train platform.  She tells him that she is not drinking to get drunk.  She is hardly drinking at all.  She is keeping a close track on what she is drinking.  It is not about being scared and alone, she is happy with Carter.  Carter thinks that he should stay out of it.  He doesn't want to be the prying boyfriend.  Abby wants to discuss it further and doesn't want him to get on the train.  The train rolls by and Abby is alone.  Carter got on the train anyways.

Luka speaks with Janet about her daughter's kidney failure.  She tells him that she had better call her husband.  He walks her to the phone and she asks him for some privacy and he walks away.  Abby explains to Marlene about her serious condition.  She is not worried.  She has hopes that this will cause her parents to get back together.  She is not scared, but optimistic.  "This could fix everything", she tells Abby.  Susan and Weaver talk in the lounge.  Kerry is getting ready to leave and Susan asks her if everything is okay.  Kerry assumes she is referring to the incident with the flu shot, but Susan tells her that it is about her dropping the syringe earlier in the bathroom stall.  Kerry acts if she has no idea what she is talking about.  Susan tells her that she knows what she saw and Kerry tells her that she is taking hormones.  Weaver asks Gallant about his altercation with a staff member that was hit.  Gallant explains to her that it was Pratt and she tells him that is okay.  Pratt follows after Gallant and speaks with him about the incident.  Pratt tells him that he is sorry about how he handled Felix's situation.  Gallant lets him know that he should have minded his own business.  Pratt tells him that next time he will hit back.  Gallant tells Pratt to say hi to Leon for him.  Abby arrives home to find Carter lurking around waiting for her.  He has had time to think and is ready to talk.  He tells her that he is sorry that he left her at the train station without talking, but he needed time.  She understands and is ready to talk with him.

TV Guide Review

October 17, 2002: Walk like a Man: Tensions between meek med student Gallant and arrogant intern Pratt reach a fever pitch as they battle over two troubled patients. The conflict begins after Pratt meddles in Army recruit Gallant's treatment of a suicidal soldier. But when Dr. Kayson (Sam Anderson), the chief cardiologist, refuses to help a known hypochondriac (Diane Delano), Gallant finally hits his limit and unloads on Pratt for having too much to say and too little to offer once the woman's symptoms prove to be legitimate. In other storylines, Abby tries to set the record straight with Carter about her drinking and Kerry makes a disastrous television appearance.
