Abby wakes up to screaming and yelling coming from her new neighbor’s apartment.  Joyce is yelling for someone to help her.  She looks at the clock and it is 3:00 AM.  Mark is awakened from his sleep by screaming also.  He goes downstairs and sees that it is Rachel watching a movie.  The screaming is coming from “Attack of the Killer Tomatoes”.  Mark sits down beside her and watches also.  Mark tells her that he remembers how he use to get up early with her to watch the “Smurfs”.    Mark gets up to get some milk and notices Rachel’s boots on the floor.  He asks her if she has been out and she tells him that she went for a walk.  He tells her that she doesn’t need to be out at 3:00 AM and she says it is like living in a prison there.  They argue and Elizabeth comes down to see what is going on.  Rachel calls her the warden and tells them that she will go back to St. Louis to live with her mom.  Elizabeth tells her to be quiet or she will wake the baby.  Rachel slams the door and Ella wakes up crying.  Back at Abby’s, the police have arrived and are speaking with Brian and Joyce.  Another officer is speaking with Abby.  They tell her that there is nothing they can do, because Joyce has not filed a complaint.  Brian walks by Abby and comments that she must be a light sleeper.

Carter wakes up and comes into the kitchen where he finds his mother fixing coffee.  She tells him that she is sorry for waking him up and he replies that he has to be up in two hours anyways.  She is surprised that Carter is drinking coffee and he tells her that he has since he was fifteen.  She offers to make Carter some eggs and he seems to be surprised.  She then asks if he has heard from his father and he tells her that he has rented an apartment on Michigan Avenue.  She then asks if he has given him his number and he tells her yes.  She lets Carter know that he did not give it to her and wants him to give his father a call for her.  Carter is not anxious do to so and lets his mother know that.  She admits to him that she has made mistakes, but thinks that it is no too late to fix them.  Abby is on her way out to work and sees Joyce on her way out also.  Joyce tells Abby that she is sorry about earlier that morning and Abby tells her that she was screaming for someone to help her.  Joyce agrees that she did and that is why Abby tells her that she called the police.  Joyce tells Abby that she and Brian have been together since high school and that they have a lot of passion.  Abby sees that Joyce is limping and tells her that she can take a look at it for her, but Joyce tells her that she will be okay.  Susan and Carter are arriving at work and discussing Eleanor.  Susan has brought Mark a cup of coffee.  Mark has called his ex-wife, Jennifer Lampkin.  Gallant tells Kerry that he was able to get a patient admitted to surgery and Kerry begins to brag on him.  Susan tells him that he is a teacher’s pet and Frank tells them that he will be hall monitor soon.  Mark joins in on the fun.  Chuny tells Mark that a forty-two year old prisoner is being brought in who has stab wounds to the face and abdomen and Mark tells her that Susan can take care of him.  Paramedic Olbes brings in David Zachary after he was beat up after brawling in a club.  He tells them that he goes by the name Dimon Z.  His back and his personal parts, “his boys”, are hurting him.  His girlfriend, Aisha, was also in a fight with another woman.  Her lip was cut by the woman’s ring.  She tells Carter that they were all jealous because Dimon Z just signed a record deal.  Kerry is at the front desk and is told that Sandy Lopez has called for her.  Chuny hears this and wonders if it is the same Sandy Lopez from the 38.  She tells them that if it is, she is gay.  She tells them that her cousin Rico liked her in high school, but she didn’t care much for him or any other guys.  Kerry listens on at the gossip as she is working on her charts.  Frank tells Kerry that Sandy left a message that she would be stopping by later.  Abby has made it in to work and Kerry puts her right to work.  Chuny hears this and asks Kerry if the two of them are friends.  Kerry tells her that she had treated another firefighter from the 38 and Sandy was just going to stop by to check on him.  Frank sees Abby and tells her how tired she looks.  Susan takes care of the prisoner, Kinney, who has been brought in.  Abby tells Susan that none of his cuts are deep, but Susan still wants to give him some fentynal.  Kinney tells them that he doesn’t want any drugs, but Susan insists.  Carter, Mark and Yosh tend to Dimon Z.  Yosh has to check Dimon’s urine and it is cloudy and contains blood.  Chuny comes in and tells Carter that his dad has called and will call him back when he arrives in New Orleans.  Gallant and Kerry discuss a patient and then she heads to the phone to call Lopez.  She is not home, so Kerry leaves her a message to tell her that she is busy and not to come by.  As she is on the phone, Kerry sees Dr. Romano with Jing-Mei.

Carter comes back in to see Dimon Z.  His boy CC is with him.  Carter has his lab results and needs to talk with him privately, but Dimon don’t seem to care if CC hears the results.  Carter tells him that he has clamydia and that it is a sexually transmitted disease.  He tells Carter that his girl is clean.  Carter wants his permission to do an HIV test.  CC seems concerned.  Carter asks Abby to do get some blood from Dimon Z for his test.  He mentions to Abby that she looks tired.  She tells him that she was up a lot last night and Carter seems interested.  He tells her that Frank seems to be tired also and she jokingly replies that she and Frank were up all night together.  Frank looks on and doesn’t realize the joke.  Carter stops to call his dad.  Frank tells Kerry that Romano has called and wants her up in his office now.  Kerry asks Carter if he knows why Jing-Mei is there and he tells her that he hasn’t spoken with her in a while.  CC asks Carter for one of the same tests he did on Dimon Z.  Carter tells him that it is not necessary because it is not contagious.  It is a sexually transmitted disease.  Carter takes the hint and asks Abby to start a chart on CC.  Mark and Elizabeth chat outside while they wait for an ambulance.  She asks him if he was able to get Jen on the phone.  He tells her that he did, but she wants to think about taking Rachel back before she makes a decision about it.  Elizabeth tells Mark that maybe she should be put in a boarding school.  Mark doesn’t like this comment and Elizabeth tells him that boarding school was good for her.  The paramedics arrive with a man suffering with heart trouble.  His name is Mr. Echeveria and he collapsed at his hotel while waiting to catch a cab.  Susan goes in to suture her prisoner patient.  Susan thinks that he may have hurt himself.  He tells her that she is the first woman he has spoken with in fourteen months.  She tells him that she was voted most likely to marry a convict.  He tells her that he is on death row and is scheduled to die on 06-06-02.  He seems to be comforted to know the exact time he will die, unlike the rest of the people in the hospital.  He wants her to keep him in the ER for as long as she can, so that he doesn’t have to spend more time in his jail cell.  She tells him that he can be observed a little while longer.  Susan starts to walk out and he grabs her arm.  He tells her Thank you, but this seems to startle her.  The prison guard comes in and tells her that he will take care of him, but Susan tells him that it is okay.  Mark and Elizabeth’s heart patient was on his way to his daughter’s wedding.  Mark tells him that he has had a heart attack and will have to stay a while.  Carter sees CC and tells him his lab results were the same.  CC tells Carter that he is also HIV positive and Carter wants to know if Aisha knows this.  He tells him know and Carter wants to talk to Dimon Z about it.  Carter goes in and wants to speak with Dimon alone, so he asks Aisha to leave the room.  He tells Dimon that he tested positive for HIV.  Dimon can’t believe it.  He tells Carter that he doesn’t use needle and that he is not gay.  Carter tells him that Aisha needs to be tested too.  He tells Carter that he does not want her to know.  He doesn’t want this to wreck his career.  Aisha comes back into the room and Dimon gets ready for them to leave the ER.  Carter tells Aisha that she needs to be looked at still and wants her to stay, but Dimon insists that they leave.  CC sees Dimon and knows that he must have tested positive.  Dimon tells CC to shut up and then he punches him in the face.  Dimon and Aisha leave.  Kerry finally makes it up to Romano’s office and finds that Jing-Mei and another man are already there.  The man is her lawyer and Jing-Mei wants her job back.  Kerry tells them that they do not need anybody right now, but if something comes available she would keep her in mind.  Kerry and Jing-Mei argue until Romano stops them.  The lawyer tells them that he is ready to file a lawsuit unless Jing-Mei’s demands are met.  Kerry gets up and heads for the door.  She tells Jing-Mei that she needs to grow up.

Carter and Abby check on CC.  He wants to know if Dimon has HIV and Carter tells him that he is not able to tell him someone else’s results.  He tells Carter and Abby that he told Dimon that they should be using protection, but he wouldn’t listen.  He explains that he is gay, but Dimon isn’t; he is bi-sexual.  Carter wants to know if Aisha knows about all of this and CC tells him that it is a secret.  Carter wants them to find Aisha, so that she can get tested.  CC tells them that he will try to page her.  Abby sees Kerry tending to her neighbor Joyce.  Abby goes to check on her and tells Kerry that Joyce is her neighbor.  Joyce has told Kerry that she hurt her ankle wearing her new roller shoes.  Kerry sends her for some X-rays.  Abby sees the X-rays and tells her that she didn’t break her ankle, but that she will probably have to use crutches for a while.  Abby asks her how she will get home and Joyce replies that she will call her husband Brian to pick her up.  Abby wants her to see a Social Worker before she leaves, but Joyce tells her that it is not necessary.  Kerry sees Dr. Romano at the front desk and he tells her that he was about to have her paged.  He told her that he wasn’t sure if she would have her pager on or not though.  He tells Kerry that Dr. Chen has a witness that can testify that she was not wearing her pager the night they lost that patient.  He tells Kerry to fix the problem and give Dr. Chen the attending position back.  He also wants her to give her an apology.  Kerry tells her that she cannot do that because nobody else would respect her in her leadership role.  He tells her that the hospital has already settled with the dead man’s family and they do not want the case opened up again.  A wedding party comes in to the ER looking for Mr. Echeveria.  His daughter, Maria, comes to speak with him.  She is still in her wedding dress.

Carter goes to the airport to see his dad before he leaves on his flight.  Carter tells him that he is just checking in with him.  He tells his father that his mom doesn’t have his new number.  Jack tells Carter that his marriage is over and Carter tells him that his mom doesn’t seem to think so.  Jack tells Carter that his talk with him earlier and losing his father has made him come to the conclusion.  Jack tells Carter that his mom can be an emotional vampire and to watch out.  Mark tells Maria that her father had a heart attack and would not be able to attend the wedding.  She had no idea that he was even going to come to her wedding.  It has been six years since he has even been in contact with her.  He tells her that he is sorry, but she doesn’t want to hear it.  He apparently kicked her out six years ago and would not let her come home when she asked.  She tells him that she is happy now and he is not going to mess up the best day of her life.  She walks out and Mark goes out after her.  He wants her to forgive her father, but she tells him that she can’t.  Chuny tells Kerry that the prisoner is crashing.  Susan comes into the room and Kerry tells her that it looks like his lung has collapsed and he has a broken rib.  Susan sees that there are new bruises on him and he tells her that the guard had to straighten him out after she had left the room earlier.  He tells the doctors that he doesn’t want them to work on him.  Susan tells him that he will die if they do not assist him, but he does not care.  Kerry is ready to insert a chest tube, but Susan tells her that they will need consent to do that.  Kerry does it anyways.  Susan walks out and asks the guard what happened and he tells her that he had to be restrained.  As they talk about it, a loud noise comes from the exam room.  She and the guard go in to see Kinney lying on the floor still strapped to his gurney.  Kerry runs into the room and they get him up off of the floor.  Kerry starts to save his life, but Susan tells her that he doesn’t want any heroic measures done to save him.  Kerry tells her that he was trying to commit suicide and he cannot ask not to be saved because he is on death row.  Kerry sees that Sandy Lopez has arrived in the ER, so she goes to speak with her.  Sandy tells her that she got her message to stop bye, but Kerry explains that she had called and left another message not to.  Sandy lets her know that she is tired of playing games.  Abby and Jing-Mei come bye to speak with Kerry and she keeps getting distracted.  This seems to annoy both Kerry and Sandy.  Kerry seems to be getting embarrassed by everyone seeing her talk to Sandy.  Jing-Mei tells Kerry that she is not going to wait around and Sandy walks off.  Kerry tells Sandy to wait, so she turns around and kisses Kerry right in front of everyone.  She then walks out as she leaves Kerry standing stunned in front of everyone.

Joyce is getting her things together to leave the ER.  Abby walks in carrying a brown paper bag.  Joyce sees it and Abby tells her that it is an escape kit.  Joyce tells Abby that she does not need it, but Abby insists that she take it just in case things get worse at home.  Adele Neuman wheels into the room to speak with Joyce before she leaves.  Joyce tells her that she does not need to speak with a Social Worker.  Mark pulls Abby away from the room and leaves Joyce and Adele alone.  Mark wants Abby to set the phone up in Mr. Echeveria’s room, so that he can hear his daughter’s wedding ceremony.  Conni asks Abby if she saw ‘the kiss”?  Kerry and Jing-Mei discuss the terms of her return in the lounge.  She tells Jing-Mei that she will start the next night and Jing-Mei does not like it.  Dr. Chen already has some conditions that she wants Kerry to follow.  She does not want to report directly to Kerry and she wants the good shifts and the same pay.  Susan finds Kerry and tells her that the inmate is in a coma.  She tells her that it will cost the taxpayers $4,000 a day to keep him alive, just so they can kill him later.  Aisha comes back in to the ER to get tested for HIV.  Mark and Rachel go for a walk by the river.  He tells her that he contacted Jen and they decided that she was going to continue to stay with him and Elizabeth for a while longer.  He tells Rachel that he wants her to stay, so that he can spend more time with her.  He has already missed a lot of things in her life already.  He tells her that they need to both try harder to get along and she tells him that she doesn’t like being treated like a kid.  He responds by telling her that he doesn’t like being treated like an old man.  Abby sees Brian coming in to pick up Joyce.  She stops him, so that he doesn’t see Joyce speaking with Adele.  Abby explains that Joyce hurt her ankle and he mentions that he told her that she would get hurt wearing those new skates.  He apologizes to Abby for what happened at the apartment earlier that morning.  Before Brian can leave to go to the room, Abby tells him that he should go get his car, so that Joyce won’t have to walk so far.  She is trying to keep him from seeing Adele with Joyce or she is just trying to give Joyce time to leave without seeing him.  Adele comes out of the room and asks to speak with Abby.  Brian heads on in to her room.  Joyce jokes about herself and they decide to go eat.  Brian wheels her out of the room and Abby reminds Joyce that she has forgot to pick up her brown bag to take home with her.  Joyce tells her that it is okay, that she already has everything that she had brought with her and leaves without the escape kit.  Kerry goes to the firehouse to speak with Sandy.  The alarm has gone off and Sandy is in a hurry to leave.  Kerry makes her stay until she is finished saying what she has to say.  Kerry is upset for what she had done in front of her co-workers earlier.  Kerry tells her that she wants to keep her private life private.  Sandy tells her that she wants to live a life without having any hardships and tells Kerry that she has done her a favor.  She gets on the fire truck and rides off as Kerry watches her leave.  Carter comes home to see his mother on a ladder.  She is changing a light bulb and drops it on the floor.  Carter can see that she has been drinking.  She doesn’t mind that he has noticed.  She tells him that she has been at the children’s cancer center all day and has also been arguing with gamma and her therapist.  Carter’s mom starts to fall down, but Carter is there to catch her.  Carter checks her pulse and it is weak.  She tells him that she had some Xanax and Carter tells her that she shouldn’t have taken it while drinking.  They end up in the bathroom with Eleanor on the floor throwing up into the toilet.  She tells Carter that gamma has asked her to leave the house.  She wants to know if he feels the same and he tells her no.  They start to talk about Carter’s brother, Bobby.  She still blames herself for his death.  His mom tells her that she failed them both, and Carter watches as she cries.
