Jackie is with Reese at the hospital daycare and she is admiring the picture that he has drawn.  She is dropping him off.  Peter comes in to see him and Reese would like him to play with him.  Shirley comes in to tell Peter that Romano wants him to scrub in, but Peter reminds her that he is off at 8:00 am and to call Edson.  He then gets beeped to come to the ER.  Jackie walks out with him and reminds him how Carla always wanted Peter to be with Reese on Father's Day.  This may help his case if he lets the judge know this.  This will be Peter's first day in court.  Mark is checking up on Rachel's attendance record.  Susan gave Carter's "Gamma" some lilies.  Carter tells her that lilies are usually given out at funerals.  Mark can't believe that she even gave Carter's grandmother flowers.  She tells Mark that she is trying to get in her good graces.  Carter tells Susan that his grandmother settled with the girl she hit earlier and that the girl's bank account will be getting bigger.  Benton comes down to the ER for a surgical consult.  He is in a hurry to leave, for he has somewhere he has to be.    Corday is returning back to surgery and Frank asks Mark about all the dead geezers.  Mark tells him that there was no evidence of any wrongdoing.  Frank comments on how if the paramedics ever have to wheel him in, he will take Romano.  There is a gunshot victim who was caught up in a gas station hold up in the ER that Luka and Gallant are working on.  This is the person that Benton is suppose to do the surgical consult on.  Peter is aggravated at how long it is taking for them to work on him.  Corday comes in to relieve Peter of his shift, so that Peter can get to his appointment.

Elizabeth works with Gallant on the gunshot victim.  Gallant asks Corday if Dr. Benton is ever in a good mood.  She replies that he has his times.  The victim is Mrs. Pruitt and the bullet his her in the head through her brain stem.  It is unlikely that she will survive, so they mention to Mr. Pruitt that his wife had a donor card.  Mark tells Elizabeth that he needs to see her in another room.  There is a young man named Rudy Escalona who is 15 years old that was brought in with a blunt  head trauma that was caused during boxing practice.  His brother Jorge and his father are with him.  Mark asks Elizabeth to check Rachel's homework later.  Luka sees Kerry and he speaks with her about taking Nicole back.  She deserves a second chance.  Kerry sees Carter and Susan working together and she tells them to split up; one doctor per patient.  Susan speaks with the boxer's brother, his hand is injured.  His dad comments on how tough he is.  Peter is on his way in to court.  He is offered another tie to wear, but it is too white for him.  A man brings his wife in to the ER because she has broken out with a rash.  They are on their honeymoon.  They are trying to get pregnant.  Abby assists Carter with them.  Nicole comes in for a meeting with personnel.  Susan takes the boxer's brother in to see him.  Roger takes the stand in court.  He tells about all he has done to assist Reese.  Roger has been able to tend to Reese without any outside assistance, unlike Peter.  Elizabeth discusses organ donation with her patient's husband.  He wants her to die naturally with all of her organs.  To get healthy organs, it is best to remove them while the heart is still beating.  She lets him go spend time with his unconscious wife.  Luka comes to get some morphine for his patient Bovard.  She tells him that she saw Nicole.  She is surprised to learn that Nicole is going to keep the baby.  She wonders if she ever even took a pregnancy test.  He tells Abby that he may end up marrying Nicole.  This upsets Abby and she and Luka argue about it, until Luka walks off.

Mark show's Rudy's family the x-ray.  He has a weak arterial wall that was not due to boxing, it is a pre-existing condition.  The brother feels bad and Gallant comforts him.  He thinks it happened when he hit him.  A boy named Sean Gatley is brought in with a toilet stuck on his foot.  Sandy Lopez is with him and she sees Weaver.  She tells Weaver that she did a good job last week.  Abby sees Nicole, who is looking for Luka.  She tells her that he is with a patient.  She asks her if she would like to get some coffee.  Cleo takes the stand at the custody hearing.  She tells the court that Peter is completely devoted to Reese.  She can't think of a better father.  She then gets cross examined and it is mentioned that she and Benton are not married, but they have been a couple for almost three years.  They have broken up often.  She considers herself to being a stable factor in Reese's life.  It is her intention to be around Reese for a very long time.  The piano incident is brought up and then they take a fifteen minute recess.  Abby and Nicole go to the break room.  Abby questions Nicole about being pregnant.  She doesn't believe that Nicole is telling the truth.  Abby offers to do an ultrasound herself.  She tells her that this is not the way to get Luka.  She is trying to figure out the truth about all of the lies Nicole has told.  Abby tells Nicole that she does not want to see Luka get hurt.  Nicole replies to Abby that she doesn't want Luka to be happy.  A made up life will not make him happy; Luka is not stupid.  Weaver thanks Lopez for her help last week.  Weaver has not met many female firefighters.  She offers to check out her hand, but Lopez tells her maybe some other time.  She doesn't like doctors.  Rudy crashes and stops breathing.  Haleh tells Dr. Greene that  Rachel has called to check in, but Mark is busy assisting Rudy.  Luka and Corday discuss their donor patient.  Luka made a suggestion to the husband that upsets Corday.  Nicole wants to know if she and Luka can take a break; he tells her yes.  Carter works on the woman with a rash.  He takes her and her husband to another exam room, where a corpse has been left.  Mark tells Rudy's family that he will not make it.  He has been down for forty-five minutes.  He gives the family a chance to say good-bye before they stop treating him.  The father takes Rudy by the hand and tells him that he fought hard and that he is proud of him.  He loves him.  This upsets the brother and he tells his father to shut-up.  He doesn't want his brother to die and he sees his father has given up.  His father cries.

Luka and Nicole go outside in the snow.  She tells him that she needs to work and that she has found a job.  She tells him that she is moving to Montreal to work in a cafe.  He tells her that he can't move.  She tells him that he is very generous and that she will call him in a few days.  He thinks she may be angry with him.  He tells her that he made her an OB appointment and she tells him that it is not necessary.  She tells him that she is not pregnant.  She made the whole thing up and she is sorry.  Mark and Gallant work on an elderly man, who is nuts.  Rudy's father and brother get into an argument.  They learn that Rudy was taking stimulants to help him fight.  It caused the vessel in his brain to burst.  The father kept pushing him to be a champ.  The brother tells the father that he quits and he puts his hand into the wall.  Jackie shows up at the courthouse.  She attacks Roger in the hallway.  Jackie tells Roger to get his own family.  Carter and Susan check on his patients.  He catches Susan listening in on them.  Carter discharges her.  Rudy's brother has broken his hand.  He will be in a cast for about six weeks.  Chuny comes to get Mark to see about a teenager that is brought in.  Gallant speaks with Jorge.  He tells Gallant that his father is from Cuba and has been through a lot.  A sixteen year old male has fallen from a lamp post and Carter and Susan check him out.  He has an ankle fracture.  Mark helps them with him and sees that it is Andrew, Rachel's friend.  Rachel is in the back of the police car.  They were stealing street signs.  Lopez comes in for Weaver to check out her hand wound.  Peter testifies.  They discuss his work shifts.  He works a lot of weekends and overnights.  Jackie's family is mentioned and the gang related death of her son Jessie.  Benton abruptly disrupts the courtroom.

Peter's lawyer gets on to him.  The judge was impressed by Roger's availability.  Peter needs to start setting priorities and making better choices about Reese's care.  Mark speaks to Rachel about Andrew, who tested positive for marijuana.  He wants her to take a drug test.  Abby talks to Gallant about calling the morgue.  He needs to see Frank about getting a deceased packet.  Luka tells Abby that Nicole is leaving town.  He tells her that there is no baby.  Carter's patient, Mrs. Urman is back.  Her rash has returned.  Peter is back in the ER.  Frank tells him that he is needed in the OR.  Gallant speaks to the father about the morgue.  He tells him to give Jorge another chance, he might surprise him.  He goes to Jorge and hugs him and they cry.  Corday switches off with Peter.  Peter talks with his patient's husband, Mr. Pruitt.  Kerry treats Lopez and then asks her out.  Mark tells Rachel that her test was negative and that he cares about her safety.  He wants to be able to trust her.  Romano and Peter scrub in to retrieve the organs.  He turns off the machine, so that she will have a cardiac arrest.  The husband watches on.  Carter and Susan go to the roof.  He kisses her and she kisses him back.  It has been forty-nine minutes and the patient is breathing on her own still, so they wait.

TV Guide Review

November 22, 2001: Quo Vadis?: This pivotal episode spins several staffers into new directions. For Benton, the change may not be a good one as his demanding schedule at the hospital gives Roger the upper hand in their court case for custody of Reese. Back at County General, however, things look up for Carter, who finally makes a move on Lewis after treating a newlywed's odd allergy, and for Kerry, who catches a romantic break in the form of a flirty firefighter (Lisa Vidal). Meanwhile, Cleo tries to avoid goodbyes during her final shift; and Nicole drops a new bombshell on Luka regarding the baby she's carrying.
