Peter and Cleo are watching Reese. Peter gets on to Cleo for feeding him sweets before he eats. Cleo is off for the day, so she tells Peter that she can watch Reese. Peter doesn't think it is such a good idea, but he doesn't tell her that. He will have to run to Carla's to pick up some things. Abby and Maggie take a walk in the park, as they have been doing over the past few weeks since she has been staying with Abby. She tells Abby that she is lucky to have two men interested in her like Carter and Luka. Maggie wants Abby to come to one of her sessions with Dr. Legaspi, but Abby doesn't know if it is such a good idea. On her way in to work, Kerry stops off at Kim Legaspi's to give her a letter. Another woman answers the door, and this throws Kerry off guard. Kim is in the shower, but her new friend would be happy to let her know that Kerry had stopped by. Kerry tells her not to mention it and then walks away without giving out her name. Jing-Mei finds Mark sleeping. She can understand how tired he must be with his new baby daughter at home. However, he tells her that she has not been keeping him up late at night. She tells him that a young boy is being brought in and he is very agitated. Malucci asks Randi and Carter their advice about him getting a new car. Kerry sees Carter and wants to speak with him in the lounge. She tells him that his application for chief resident was intercepted. He is still on probation and she does not feel he is up to it yet. The young boy, Ben, gets checked out by Mark. He is very feisty and his neighbor is the one who brought him to the ER. He had started a fire and seems to have burned himself. The staff are discussing a softball game that they are playing in later. Luka tells Abby that he misses her and hopes that she will come to the game. She tells him that she won't be able to make it. John tells Jing-Mei about his rejection and apologizes to him. He congratulates her, because he feels she is a "shoe in" and will get the chief resident position. Peter arrives at Carla's to pick up some of Reese's things. She tells him that Roger moved out a few days ago and then she tries to put a move on Peter. She tells him that it would have been better for Reese if she and Peter had just stayed together. Roger never loved her. She tells Peter that the two of them really had something. Before she can jump him, his cell phone rings; it is Cleo. As they talk, Reese goes to Cleo's piano and has the lid slam down on his hands. Kerry sees Jing-Mei and tells her that she would like to speak with her privately. Kerry tells her that her maternity leave has put her behind 3 months and that she will not be able to recommend Jing-Mei for chief resident. She would not make the deadline and will not be a candidate for this year. Jing-Mei says that she plans to work and make up the time, but Kerry tells her that she would not be able to work over 60 hours a week. Jing-Mei finds this to be sexist and wrong. She put her career before her family and Kerry tells her that she will take this into advisement. Abby tends to Ben. He is still being a rascal and he tells her that he can not feel his fingers. Mark notices that his ear is badly bruised. Kim sees Kerry and tells her that she heard she had came by. Kerry brushes it off as something that wasn't really important and that she was just in the neighborhood. Kim tells her to take care of herself. Abby sees Kim and mentions what Maggie had said to her about coming to one of her meetings. Cleo brings Reese to the ER. His hand has been broken and he will need to have a cast put on it. Carla says it will be hard for him to sign like that, and then she chews Cleo out for not watching him. She exchanges some hard words with Cleo and then tells her to keep away from her son. Peter breaks it up, but does not come to Cleo's defense. Kerry speaks with Luka as they wait for an ambulance to arrive. He had seen her speaking with Kim earlier, so she wanted to let him know that she and Legaspi are over. He asks her if she still loves her, and if she does, it should go forward and not backwards. The ambulance arrives with a fifty-year-old male and his sister that were involved in a hit and run car accident. His name is Jim Vogel and his sister is Bonnie Vogel. She is mentally handicapped and she wants to go on another ride in the ambulance. Jim takes care of her and there is no other family. Abby goes to the meeting with Dr. Legaspi and her mother. She arrives after the session has started, but they are happy to see her. They were discussing ways that Maggie can stay on track. Maggie has decided to move back to her home place and Abby wants to know if she has told her brother Eric that she is wanting to move back to Florida. She tells her not Florida, but Minnesota. That is where Maggie is originally from and it has been fifteen years since she has been there. She tells Abby that she has already made arrangements to stay with someone named Gina and work in a convalescent home. She will save enough money and get a place of her own. She can get a cat to keep her company. Abby finds this all to be ridiculous and will not go along with it, but she doesn't have a better solution. Down in the ER, Ben's father has arrived. Mark tells him that a psychiatrist will be coming to check on his son. Jing-Mei is suturing Bonnie and hears that she and her brother were heading to the park when they were hit. Kerry and Luka are tending to Jim. He will need surgery, but before he can be taken up, he started crashing. He is worried about who will look after Bonnie. He then stops breathing and they have to shock his heart. Mark suspects that Ben is being physically abused by his father.  Bonnie watches as they try to save her brother's life.  She thinks that they are hurting him, so Lydia takes her out of the room and closes the blinds.  Carter and Abby take a walk and they discuss her meeting with her mom and Dr. Legaspi.  He tells her about Weaver not recommending him for chief resident.  They both tell each other how sorry they are for their problems.  The doctors are unable to save Jim and he dies.  Jing-Mei goes with Kerry to tell Bonnie.  She relates his death with Ernie her hamster.  He died also, but they got a new one.  She thinks they can get her a new Jim.  Kerry tells her that Jim has died just like her parents had died and that he will not be coming back.  She tells Kerry that she gets scared at night and that she needs her brother.  Kim finds Abby in the lounge.  She wants her to give her mother another chance.  Abby tells her that she will consider it.  Adele Neuman comes down to check on Bonnie.  She will have to be taken to a home.  Kerry does not like this, but there is no other choice.  Mark grabs Adele and asks for her opinion on Ben.  Ben will have to be taken into emergency custody.  This angers his father, but security takes him into custody.  Abby goes home to find that her mother has prepared dinner for the two of them.  Abby talks with her and explains why she ran out during their session.  Maggie tells her that she does not want to die and she does not want her little girl to watch her die.  She wants the both of them to get on with their lives.  Abby reveals that she was pregnant before when she was married to Richard, but she had an abortion because she was afraid that the baby might be bi-polar.  She tells Maggie that some people were not meant to be mothers.  She had never told Richard and that was the beginning of the end of their relationship.  Abby did not want to turn into her mom.  Maggie hugs her and holds her.  Kerry puts Bonnie into the taxi to go to the home.  This is hard for her to do and Jing-Mei watches from inside the ER.  At the softball game, Malucci pitches.  Abby has shown up and is there to play with the rest, including Malik, Carter and Luka.  Mark is happy that he was right about Ben.  Kerry sees Kim and hands her the letter that she was going to give her earlier.  It is about her feelings and she wants for Kim to read it.  Ben tells Mark that he is bad a lot and that is why he gets punished so much.  It is all of his fault.  Mark tells him that it is not his fault that his father abuses him.  Back at the softball game, Malik hits Abby in as her mom cheers her in the stands.  Luka gets up to bat, but is not very good.  He hits a foul ball, but runs the bases anyways, not knowing the rules of the game.  Maggie and Abby laugh as they watch from the bleachers.
