he goes on his shift. A 58 year old
clown has been brought in after collapsing at
a party and Malucci is afraid of him. A
woman has come in wanting a clean needle, but
Haleh and Carter will not give her one.
She tells them that she always gets a clean
needle from a doctor there. Randi tells
Carter that a woman has called to cancel a
date for the night. Carter asks Chuny if
she will go with him and she tells him that
she already has plans. Carter and Abby
work on the clown. Carter asks her about
her plans for the night, and she tells him
that she has a date with her couch. He
would like her to go with him to the charity
event. The clown dies, so she says that
it would be the least she could do for someone
who just killed a clown. The woman who
wants a clean needle, Janice, sees her doctor
walking up to the desk; it is Mark. He
tells Haleh to give her a clean needle, and
Janice thanks him.
Bishop Stewart comes in looking for Dr.
Kovach. He needs another prescription to
help with his pain. Luka thinks he
should contact his personal physician, but he
would rather see Luka. Mark takes care
of Mr. Romerez who has a cold. He wants
Mark to give him a prescription of
antibiotics, but Mark will not. He then
takes care of an eighty-five year old woman
who is dead by the time she arrives to the ER.
He gets on to the paramedics for bringing her
in. She should have died in her own bed
at the nursing home. Luka tells Abby
that the singer she likes will be performing
at the hotel tonight, but she tells him that
she has already made plans with Carter.
He tells her to go and have fun. Carter
takes care of Jeff, who has mono. Jeff
is concerned about his blood count and such.
He wants to be tested for HIV. He has
been negative, but has been having unprotected
sex and has been exposed to the virus.
Luka tells the bishop that his blood sugar is
up to 348. He learns that the bishop has
lupus and did not let him know about it.
Luka is upset because he could have harmed him
by giving him the steroids. He can not
continue to take the steroids, but the bishop
needs it to help him continue his ministry.
The bishop asks Luka what church he belongs to
and Luka tells him that he does not go to
church anymore. A sixteen year old kid
with bad congestive heart failure comes in
after collapsing at a basketball game.
His name is Nick and he has already had two
heart transplants. The last one was six
years ago. He tells Luka that he does
not want another transplant. Malucci
tells Mark about his flu patient and Mark
tells him not to give out any antibiotics,
they will not do any good. Carter is on
his way out and Kerry has Malucci take over
his sick patient with mono. Carter tells
him to be sensitive with him and his HIV
testing. When Malucci comes in , Jeff's
partner Sean is in the room with him. He
wants to hear the results. Malucci tells
him that he is HIV negative. Sean is
positive and Malucci asks Jeff if he is trying
to catch HIV and learns that is what he is
trying to do. He will need to do a
direct measure of Jeff's viral load to see if
he has been exposed. Kovach is concerned
that the bishop may have fluid around his
heart. He needs a cardio-echo and needs
to be admitted, but he does not want that.
He does not want to die in the hospital.
Luka meets Nick's parents and they tell him
about the two transplants and how he always
tells the doctor that he does not want a
transplant when he is depressed. They
want him to have the transplant. Cleo
tells Mark that her flu patient wants to see
someone higher up. Her name is Sarah
Dell and she wants antibiotics. She
thinks that they will not give them to her
because she is poor. He leads her to
chairs where she watches him announce to
everyone that no antibiotics will be given out
to flu patients. Half of them walk out.
Romano bumps into Mark and tells him not to be
giving out needles to junkies anymore.
Mark replies that he would rather give out
clean needles then have an outbreak of HIV and
hep--heppa (has a hard time saying hepatitis)
and Romano makes fun of him. Carter goes
to pick Abby up and he shows up in a tuxedo.
She is dressed informal and has to go change.
He asks if she is mad at him and she says yes.
Elizabeth tells Nick's parents that he is on
the top of the list for a transplant.
Nick tells Luka that he is always tired and
has freakish side effects due to the pills he
takes; he does not want another transplant.
Romano tells Kerry that he has a problem with
Mark and that she needs to straighten him out.
Carter has brought Abby fresh flowers, but she
tells him that she prefers dead, dried
flowers. She comes out in a pink
bridesmaid dress. He tells her that she
looks nice. They go outside and to her
surprise, a limo is waiting. Mark tells
Elizabeth that a little kid got scared of his
scar and he called him humpty dumpty.
She tells him that they changed the wedding to
a later time. It will need to be an
evening wedding. He agrees that it will
be okay. She tells him that he is
getting better. Nick Stevens arrests and
Elizabeth goes to intubate him. They use
the paddles to get his heart rhythm back.
Luka tells Nick to open his eyes, but he gets
no response. Carter and Abby arrive at
the museum. She tells Carter that Luka
never gets jealous. They arrive and he
tells her that there will only be a few people
there, but there are hundreds. Malucci
gets Jeff's viral tests back and he is
definitely negative. He tells Jeff that
nothing is worth dieing for and that he needs
to be more careful. Sean can't really
love him if he wants him to get HIV.
Jeff tells him that he don't have anyone else
and Malucci replies, "You have
yourself". John and Abby go in and
she meets his grandfather, John Truman Carter
the first. Carter and Abby go to the
dance floor and dance. She feels like
she is at her spring formal from high school,
where she dumped her date so that she could be
with another guy outside smoking. Luka
goes in to speak to the bishop. He has
seen how Luka worked on Nick and how
remarkable he was bringing him back to life.
The bishop tells Luka how scared he really is
of dieing. He does not want to be
bedridden and wishes he was as brave as Nick.
Malucci watches as Jeff leaves and asks him if
he will protect himself from now on, but he
tells him probably not. The ER gets a
paramedic call and Mark answers. He
tells them to not bring in an older gentleman
who he pronounces dead over the radio.
Kerry tells Haleh that it is legal.
Bishop Stewart's personal physician comes in
looking for Mark. Abby runs into her
ex-husband, Richard, at the charity event.
He is their with Alexis, his new young
girlfriend. He recognized the bridesmaid
dress that she wore at his sister's wedding.
This embarrasses Abby. The bishop's
physician, Dr. Frost, chews Luka out. He
has been treating him for over fifteen years.
He tells him that the bishop is drug seeking.
The paramedics bring in the man who had fully
arrested that Mark had already pronounced dead
over the radio. The family wanting them
to bring him to the ER. Kerry accepts
him since they arrived with him. Kerry
tells them to resume compressions after Mark
tells them to quit doing C.P.R. They
have to care for him now that he is there.
The man is dead and the family watches on.
Cleo goes to speak with the family as Mark
walks out mad. Abby is upset about
Richard, so she and Carter go looking for his
car. Carter suggest that they may be in
his date's car, a Lexus. He then laughs
(get it? Alexis). When they find it they
let the air out of one of his rear tires,
until the alarm goes off. Then they hop
back into the limo and drive off. Romano
tells Luka that Nick will have the transplant.
Luka tells him that Nick does not want it, but
Romano tells him that he will thank them in a
few years. He is only a kid and does not
really know what he wants. Kerry catches
Mark on his way out. She wants to know
if he is ready to be back at work. She
asks him to take some time off, and he tells
her no. Luka tells the bishop that Dr.
Frost arranged for him to have more test on
Monday. He thanks him for all of his
help and for listening. Luka gives him
more steroids before he leaves. Carter
and Abby watch on as Richard's car gets towed.
She feels bad for ruining Carter's night.
He tells her that he had a really good time
and she replies that she did also. Kerry
makes a call to get information about
evaluating a physician (Mark) who may be
cognitively impaired. They will meet
first thing Monday morning to discuss it.

February 8, 2001: Thy Will Be Done: James
Cromwell returns as Bishop Stewart, the prelate
treated by Kovac in an earlier episode. The
bishop comes back to the hospital and tells
Kovac that he will stay there as long as
necessary for treatment but refuses to be
admitted. Other patients include a 16-year-old (Josh
Peck) who doesn't want to have a third heart
transplant and a gay man (Robert Beitzel)
who won't practice safe sex. Carter, however,
isn't concerned about medical matters. In need
of a last-minute date for a black-tie charity
function, he asks Abby to accompany him.
