Kerry
is taking a long shower at Kim's place.
She has spent the night and seems to feel
awkward about it. This was her first
intimate time with Kim. Kim tries to
kiss her on her way out, but Kerry kind of
pulls away. She tells her that she will
see her at work. She wants to make sure
that nobody finds out about the two of them.
Romano speaks to Peter about taking over some
administrative responsibilities. It
would include some more money and help his
career get back on track. Peter
reluctantly agrees and is then pushed into a
room full of eager reporters. Romano
introduces him as the new Director of
Diversity for the Medical Center. The
reporters want to know what he is going to do
as the new leader of diversity. Peter
looks on at them confused and speechless and
then turns to Romano with an evil look.
Carter goes to see his cousin Chase at the
nursing home. He tries to get him to
drink a protein shake, but Chase knocks it out
of his hand. He is probably upset that
this is the first time Carter has been to see
him in over a year. Two older man are in
the ER and Abby is tending to them. They
were injured fighting each other over a woman
named Victoria at the nursing home. Mark
is back at work, but is only working a four
hour shift. Kerry asks how he is doing,
but Mark is too busy telling her about someone
being in a press conference. He says she
is in a conference and then he is in a
conference, and this confuses Kerry. She
does not know what he is talking about.
Luka is taking care of a Guatemalan man who
has had his finger cut off. Kerry asks
him how it happened and learns that it was
done at work. She thinks that it should
be reported to INS, because he is probably an
illegal alien working in one of the sweat
shops in town. Luka does not think that
it is a good idea, but Kerry doesn't care what
Luka thinks.
Kerry sees Kim at work. Peter sees
Romano after the reporter ambush and tells him
that he does not want the job. Romano
tells him that it is too late. Romano
sees Elizabeth and wants to know why she
continues to cancel elective surgeries on
patients. She replies that she is just
delaying them until later. He tells her
to cover the ER for the rest of her shift.
A fifteen year old boy is brought in after
being shot in the head, by himself, while
playing a game of "Russian
roulette". The boy dies. Mark
speaks to the other person who was playing
with him. It is an older boy who should
have known better. They had both been
drinking. Mark keeps confusing the boy
by referring to the other boy as a she and not
a he. Kerry sees Elizabeth and asks her
how Mark has been doing. Elizabeth says
that he is tired, but seems to be doing well.
Kerry tells her that she thinks Mark may be
mixing up his pronouns. Elizabeth has
not noticed. Kerry sees Carter and tells
him that since his recent drug incident, he
will need to start his 90 days over again.
He will not be able to distribute any pain
medication to his patients and he agrees to
it. One more mistake and he will be
fired. Carter tells Abby and she seems
to be proud of him for it. Abby's two
older gentlemen patient both have clemitia
that they caught from Victoria at the nursing
home. Carter tells her that at least
there is something more to do at an older age
than playing shuffle board. Multiple
burn victims are being brought in after a
basement fire. Kerry learns that they
are workers from an illegal sweat shop that
had caught fire during a INS raid.
Elizabeth takes care of the INS officer and he
will need open heart surgery. She seems
really reluctant, but ends up taking him up
anyways. Peter takes care of a woman who
was electrocuted while rescuing her daughter
from beneath some ruble. The girl is
okay, but the mother ends up dieing.
Peter wants Carter to give his patient some
pain medicine, but Carter tells him that he
can't and walks out. He goes to tell
Malucci to do it. Peter tells Carter
that he should not still be getting punished
for what happened so long ago. Peter
talks to Kerry about it and learns about
Carter's recent drug incident. Chuny
helps translate information between the
Guatemalan patients and the doctors assisting
them. Luka promises his patient that he
will get the money to his wife in Guatemala.
The man will not make it long due to his
severe burns and infections. Kerry looks
to feel very guilty about the whole incident.
Elizabeth has a hard time operating on her
patient. She seems very afraid and needs
more time, but they are running out of blood.
She finally gets her head together and does a
great job, as Romano looks on. Carter
goes back to see Chase. He has brought
him some food and wants to talk with him.
He tells him about the stabbing last year and
how he got addicted to pain killers. He
tells him that he thinks about getting high
every day all day. He is a drug addict.
Chase asks him if he brought any French fries.
Kerry leaves work as the little girl whose
mother died of electrocution looks at her with
sad eyes. She is being picked up by a
social worker to send her back to Guatemala or
to a state home. Kerry goes home, but
turns around and heads back to Kim's for the
night. Kim meets her at the door and
welcomes her in with open arms.

TOM BOSLEY AND TOM POSTON
GUEST-STAR -- Dr. Weaver (Laura Innes) regrets
her decision to report a work-related injury in
an illegal sweatshop when the corrupt owners
panic and try to eliminate the evidence by
torching the premises -- with the illegal alien
workers trapped inside -- while Dr. Greene
(Anthony Edwards) returns to work with a curious
change in his attitude and personality.
Elsewhere, Dr. Benton (Eriq La Salle) is
sandbagged by the wily Dr. Romano (Paul McCrane)
who lures him into a new position without
confiding the political implications of the new
job. After confessing his temptation to Weaver,
Dr. Carter (Noah Wyle) is restricted from
issuing controlled narcotics. Abby (Maura
Tierney) treats two combative elderly men (guest
stars Tom Poston, "Newhart" and Tom Bosley,
"Happy Days") who are injured while fighting
each other. Dr. Corday (Alex Kingston) wavers
again during surgery and risks her career. Goran
Visnjic, Michael Michele and Erik Palladino also
star.

TV Guide Review
February 1, 2001: Surrender: TV veterans
Tom Poston and Tom Bosley guest
star as retirement-community residents who find
themselves at the hospital after an argument
over a female retiree got physical. Meanwhile,
the relationship between Weaver and Legaspi (Elizabeth
Mitchell) has reached a new plateau — though
Weaver doesn't want anyone to know. Benton is
surprised when Romano suddenly gives him a raise
and is even more stunned when he learns why. And
while Corday seems wary of performing any
surgery, Greene, who's still recovering from his
operation, is mixing up his pronouns. On top of
all this, a sweatshop fire fills the ER with
injured illegal immigrants.

TNT Review
Weaver and Legaspi have
spent the night together, although Kerry appears
shy of beginning a relationship. She also
battles Luka over calling the authorities about
an illegal sweatshop employing one of his
patients, which causes the owners to torch the
place. Greene is back to work, but mixing up his
pronouns, referring to a male patient as a
"she." Corday freezes again during surgery, but
is able to overcome her fears. Romano talks
benton into taking a job as County's director of
diversity. In the wake of his Vicodin slip,
Carter is banned from prescribing drugs. He
later visits Chase at his home, and admits his
addiction. Abby treats two horny old men.
