A
man, Dan Harris, and his son, Paul, are in an
automobile accident. They are hit by a
big garbage truck. Mark and Elizabeth
are still in New York and Mark is going to be
having his surgery. He tells Elizabeth
that he has never been operated on before.
She can tell that he is afraid. The
paramedics use the "Jaws of Life" to
get Mr. Harris and his son out of their
vehicle. Malucci is on his paramedic
ride-along, so he is assisting also.
Malucci can see that Adam has a head trauma
and he is pulled out first, then they get Mr.
Harris out. Back at the ER, Kerry works
on Adam, while Carter works with Mr. Harris.
They insert a tube through the father's chest
to help him breathe because of a collapsed
lung. He sees Kerry working on his son
in the next room and he yells for him to be
strong. Mark has Elizabeth sign some
papers that say that he does not want any
heroic measures done if something goes wrong
during the surgery. He does not want to
be left in a vegetative state. Elizabeth
signs them and tells him that he will be fine.
Mr. Harris learns that his son, Paul, will
need surgery on his leg. The bone has
broke through the skin. Abby asks Carter
if he has told Weaver yet about the drug
incident a week earlier. He tells her
that he has not, but that it is one of his New
Year's resolutions to do so. Elizabeth
shaves Mark's remaining hair off, until she
makes a mess. Mark asks her if she will
be in the room with him and she tells him that
she will wait outside the room. Mark
finishes shaving his head as she cleans up.
Mr. Harris goes to have a head CT done to see
if he sustained any head injuries during the
accident. They tell him that Paul had
head injuries also.
Mr.
Harris tells Abby that his wife is going to be
mad at him and blame him for everything.
He tells her that they had lost their first
son to S.I.D.S. and that she probably still
blamed him for that. Mark sees a young
boy in the room with him. He is going to
have an operation to remove a growth off of
his heart. Mark tells him that they are
going to remove one off of his brain.
They boy seems to pretty worried about it, as
does Mark. Mr. Harris is in the hallway
waiting as they wheel Paul down the hall.
He has become unresponsive and they are having
to work on him. Mr. Harris watches as
they try to save his life. They tell him
that he may have bruised his brain and that
this has caused his son to go into a coma.
An officer comes to question Mr. Harris about
the accident. The officer tells him that
several witnesses saw him run the red light.
The accident was his fault. This makes
him feel more guilty about his son's injuries.
Mark tells Elizabeth that he loves her as they
wheel him into the OR. He tells her that
he has left the house to her and his unborn
baby if he does not make it.
Mr.
Harris goes in to check on his son.
Kerry tells him that he can talk to him and
that he can probably hear him. He speaks
to his son and hold his hand. He tells
him that it is time to wake up now. As
the anesthesiologist works with Mark, he hears
Elizabeth's voice. She has come to look
after him in the OR. Mr. Harris' wife
comes in to find her husband sleeping and
holding her son's hand. He wakes and
tells his wife that it was his fault and that
he ran the light. He tells her that he
is sorry, but she doesn't seem to interested
in his apologies. He begins to have
chest pains, so Kerry has Luka come and check
him out and take him out of the room. As
the doctor's are working on Mark and as he is
being questioned, he starts to have seizures.
As he seizes, we can see that he is having
flashbacks of Jen, Rachel, his father and
mother. The doctor tells Elizabeth that
they will have to stop the procedure and
finish it another day if he does not come to.
Mark has been down a little over thirty
minutes, when he finally comes to and they are
able to finish. They want him to name
all of the "B" words that he can.
He says, baby, boy, and he also tells
Elizabeth baby boy names that begin with the
letter "B". Mr. Harris learns
that he has had a heart attack. He will
need to go and have more test done.
After Mark's surgery, Dr. Burke tells him and
Elizabeth that the surgery went fantastically.
He will need to keep a positive outlook for
everything to be successful. Mrs. Harris
comes in to check on her husband. She
tells him that Paul is awake and this makes
him feel a lot better. She apologizes
for what happened earlier and then she leaves
as they work on him. Elizabeth is with
Mark and she sees that he has become altered
and confused. He keeps talking about
haven left the stove on and he needs to get
dressed and go. Romano comes in to see
Mr. Harris and sees that he will need open
heart surgery. The really starts to make
him worry. He does not want the surgery,
but Romano tells him that he will die in a few
minutes if it is not done. Dr. Burke
tells Elizabeth and Mark that his medication
had caused him to become altered. He
should be okay now. Mark watches as his
young room mate bleeds out and the doctor's
work on him. Elizabeth closes the
curtain. Romano and Peter scrub in for
Mr. Harris' bypass surgery. We see Peter
call the time of death over his patient.
I think it is Mr. Harris, until the camera
angle comes across and we see Mr. Harris
watching. Mr. Harris' surgery went well.
His son is wheeled up beside him and he is
doing well also. Mark asks about his
young room mate and Elizabeth tells him that
he is back in surgery. He wants her to
take out his catheter, so that he can go to
the restroom. The hospital staff are
busy, so she does it and she watches as he
gets up to walk. He tries to walk on his
own, but he gets light headed, so she helps
him. We watch the fireworks outside as
he and Elizabeth head to the restroom.
