Amira
greets Dr. Weaver as she comes in to work.
The weather was too bad for her to drive, so
she took the El. Carter has been working
the night shift while Mark and Elizabeth are
in New York. They have gone to see a
specialist, Dr. Burke, about his tumor.
Carter is on his way home to get some rest.
As he gets in the bed, his pager goes off.
Dr. Coburn is with Jing-Mei, who is in labor.
Carter was paged to come in to help her with
the delivery. Cleo and Peter are in bed
sleeping, when she is awoken by some people
speaking. It is Kynesha and her friend
Tiny babbling back and forth. The
adoptive parents have arrived for the birth of
the baby. They tell Carter that they
came all the way from Portland to be there for
the delivery, but Jing-Mei prefers that they
not watch. They are worried that she may
be changing her mind about putting the baby up
for adoption. Dr. Legaspi comes down to
take a look at a patient. Kerry hands
her a Christmas present. Dr. Kim hasn't
gotten her a present, but she has caused her
to get the hiccups. Cleo is tired of
Kynesha staying with her. She has been
there for over a week and Cleo tells Peter
that she has to go within the next two days.
A woman brings in her son after he is attacked
and hurt by a neighbor's dog. Jing-Mei
finally delivers a baby boy. They ask
her if she would like to hold him and she
replies that she does not. The dog owner
comes to the ER with her son to check on the
boy who was bitten. The boys mother
tells her that the dog will need to be put
down. The dog's owner can't believe that
the dog would do that and her son is upset
about his dog having to be put down.
Peter sees a little girl hiding in a closet.
She tells him that she has hurt her foot.
Peter tells her to come out and that he will
look at it. She tells him that she
is hiding because she is afraid of needles.
She is at the hospital to have a blood
transfusion for her older sister who has
leukemia. Carter gets called to come and
check on Jing-Mei. She is getting
dressed to go home because they are telling
her that she needs to hold her baby and say
goodbye. She does not want to, so she
wants to go home. Mark goes through some
testing to see how bad his brain tumor is.
Cleo gets a call from Kynesha telling her that
her car is missing. Cleo calls and
reports it to the police. Carter talks
to the adoptive parents and explains
Jing-Mei's reservations for not wanting to
hold the baby. He carries the baby in to
see his mother. Jing-Mei holds her baby
boy and cries. Mark paces around the
room as he and Elizabeth wait to hear from the
Tumor Board. Mark asks Elizabeth if she
will still have the baby if his prognosis is
not good and she tells him that she will.
Abby mentions that Luka has gone to visit
family in Croatia for the holidays. The
adoptive father comes down to tell Carter that
Jing-Mei is breast feeding the baby. Dr.
Legaspi and Kerry speak to the boy who was bit
by the dog. He tells them that his dad
was going to be mad if he found out that he
opened his Christmas present early. He
tells them that it was a B B gun. He
then admits to have been shooting at the dog.
That is why the dog attacked him. Carter
goes in and speaks with Jing-Mei. He
asks her if she is having second thoughts
about giving the baby up for adoption.
Cleo's car was found. The clutch is
burned out and has some other problems with
it. Who ever took it did not know how to
drive a stick shift. The mother of the
little girl that Peter is taking care of comes
down. She speaks with Peter and wants to
know where her daughter is. He explains
that her foot is hurt and how scared she is of
the hospital. The mother takes offense
to it and is tired of everyone thinking that
she had the younger daughter only to help save
the older one. She then asks where her
daughter is and walks away angry. The
adoptive parents come in to see Jing-Mei and
to get their baby. Jing-Mei asks if they
have picked out a name yet and they tell her
that it is Michael Alexander. Jing-Mei
hands the baby to the new mother and she
begins to sing to him, "Baby Mine".
Mark and Elizabeth finally get to meet Dr.
Burke. He has looked at Mark's test
results and agrees that he can operate on him.
The operation could help him to live two more
years. The procedure will be done on New
Years Eve. Mark looks as if he could
cry. Randi wakes Carter up, yet another
time, to have him take care of a man that was
in a motorcycle accident. He ran into a
van of kids who were on their way to a
Christmas Pageant. Kynesha apologizes to
Cleo for all the trouble. She admits
that Tiny must have taken the car. She
really wants to stay with Cleo because nobody
is home to take care of her. Carter goes
in to clean up an exam room and sees a bottle
of Vicodin that belonged to the guy in the
motorcycle accident. He reaches up
quickly, opens the bottle, and pops 2 pills
into his mouth. He then gets up and goes
to the bathroom and puts his fingers in his
throat and throws them up. He then
reaches into the toilet and fishes the 2 pills
out. He goes to Abby and tells her that
they need to talk right now. He tells
her what he did and she tells him that he
needs to tell Kerry. He thinks that it
would be the end of his job there and that he
would have to go back to Atlanta if he did
that. He tells her that the pills did
not really get into his system. She then
tells him to tell Kerry that he is sick and
that they will go to a meeting immediately.
Mark and Elizabeth watch as people ice skate.
He tells her that he has decided to tell
Rachel and Jen about his tumor.
Elizabeth learns that Mark and his family
lived in New York awhile when he was younger. Malucci is on his way home when Kerry asks him
to stay and work four more hours, since Carter
has left sick. He doesn't want to, but
he does. Dr. Legaspi thanks Kerry for
the first edition book that she gave her as a
gift. She does not think that she and
Kerry can just be friends. Kerry asks
why, and then Kim kisses her and tells her
"That's why". Jing-Mei gets a
call from her mother, but she has the nurse
tell her that she is asleep. She then
tells the nurse to put a hold on her calls.

that Chen's attitude toward her unwanted baby

Carter must fight against temptation to ruin the
progress of his drug rehabilitation program.
Elsewhere: Dr. Benton (Eriq La Salle) receives
an ultimatum from Dr. Finch (Michael Michele) to

TV Guide Review
December 14, 2000: The Greatest of Gifts:
Assigned to night duty, Carter's first shift
ends in overtime and he's wiped out. Before he
can sleep, however, his pager summons him back
to the hospital because Chen is about to deliver
and he's her birthing coach. A tired Carter then
has to act as liaison between the new mother and
the adoptive parents, who fear that Chen will
renege once she's seen her baby. But when Carter
experiences a crucial moment in his recovery, he
turns to Abby, who shares a history of substance
abuse and has attended AA meetings with him.

TNT Review
While giving birth, Chen
undergoes second thoughts about giving her baby
up for adoption, a decision complicated by the
adoptive parents watching her every move. With
an enormous lack of sleep, Carter is called back
to the hospital to act as Chen's coach, and is
later tempted to take Vicodin to stay awake.
Finch and Benton encounter trouble trying to
keep Kynesha hidden from the gang. Legaspi
plants a kiss on Weaver. Greene and Corday spend
the day in New York seeking help for his brain
tumor.
