Mark
is asked to go on a transport to pick up a guy
who needs a heart transplant. The guy is
in his early thirties and his name is Tom
Coggins. The ER is chaotic, as usual,
and they are understaffed. Dr. Kovach
did not show up for his shift and Kerry Weaver
is off. Peter is back on the job and
working in the ER. Mark takes a
helicopter ride to Indiana. Elizabeth
reminds him of the wedding coordinator's visit
later and he tells her that he will call her
and keep her informed about what is going on.
Cleo seems to be insulted by Peter working in
the ER. She tells him that she feels as
if he has dumped her. Peter tries
working on a little boy and Cleo has to come
and help him with his bedside manners. A
man with a pencil in his chest comes in and it
looks like a surgical case. Peter is
ready to jump right on it, but Romano comes in
and reminds him that he is not on as a
surgeon. Romano takes care of the man
instead. Carter sees Peter helping a man
that is vomiting in the hallway and he finds
it very funny. Carter takes care of a
young man named Trent Larson, who needs
stitches. Chuny comes in and tells
Carter that the young man's grandmother would
like to speak to him first. She tells
Carter that her grandson is HIV positive and
to be cautious. She also tells him that
her grandson is not aware of it. Carter
tells her that he is concerned that she has
not told him. He could be sexually
active and could infect someone. The
grandmother tells Carter that he is not
sexually active. Carter calls his doctor
and speaks to him about it. Mark arrives
by helicopter to pick up the transplant
patient. They share a common interest,
he is engaged also. Abby is concerned
about Luka, because nobody seems to know where
he is. He has gone to see a detective to
find out if they have found any family members
of the mugger he killed. The detective
tells him that he is better off if they do not
find any family members. Carter has a
talk with Trent. He asks him if he knows
anything about his mother and how she died.
He knows that she was a heroin addict.
Carter tells him that he has HIV, but he is
healthy. Trent is surprised and shocked.
He is feeling betrayed by his grandmother for
not telling him. He has been lied to his
whole life. The helicopter is twenty
minutes from the hospital. Tom starts
having chest pains and Mark tells him that he
is having a heart attack. Mark tells him
that he will get him to the hospital.
Trent gets his things together and his
grandmother and him leave. She thanks
Carter sarcastically for helping him.
Mark's patient is an English teacher and has
been for ten years. They are five
minutes out and Elizabeth tells Mark that his
fiancée, Janet, is on her way to meet them at
the hospital. A loud noise is heard and
the helicopter starts swaying. The main
rotor is quitting. The pilot calls
mayday and starts on an emergency descent.
Elizabeth is still on the phone with Mark and
then loses the line. She is back at the
hospital concerned. The pilot lands in a
nearby junkyard and they are all okay.
They all leave the helicopter in case it
explodes. They give Tom medicine to
relax him. The ER is really getting
busy, so Peter takes charge. Luka goes
around the area he and Abby were mugged to ask
around about the mugger. Nobody seems to
recognize his picture. Mark goes back to
the helicopter to get some flares, so that the
paramedics can find them. As he runs to
the helicopter they arrive. Abby calls
Luka's place and leaves a message for him to
call her. A young child comes in to the
ER and needs to be intubated. Peter
feels uncomfortable to do it, so he asks Cleo
to. Peter thanks her. Haleh tells
Peter that they need to close to trauma, since
the ER is so busy. Peter does not know
what to do. (Haleh must be charge nurse
now that Carol has gone?) Trent comes
back to see Carter. He has brought his
girlfriend Emma with him. When the
paramedics arrive, Mark wants to ride with
them. He tells them to take Tom to
county, but they tell him that another
hospital is closer. Mark tells them to
take him to county anyways. Janet
arrives at the ER. Elizabeth feels her
in on what is going on. She tells her
that she and Tom have been engaged for three
years. They got engaged right before he
got sick. On the way to the hospital
they lose Tom's pulse. They should have
went to a closer hospital. When they
arrive at the ER, he is in bad shape.
Kerry comes in to work. She is upset
with Peter for letting the ER get out of
control. Romano isn't too happy with him
either. Carter gets the lab results back
on Trent's girlfriend Emma. He has
infected her with the virus and she is HIV
positive also. Carter wants them both to
speak to a counselor. Janet wants her
and Tom to get married in the ER now, before
he dies. Tom wants to wait until his
heart transplant before he marries her.
Abby sees all that Carter has been going
through and asks him if he needs to take a
break. He tells her that he is okay.
Kovach goes to view the autopsy of the man he
killed. As Carter is walking up the
hallway, he hears that Trent and his
girlfriend had a fight and he ran out in the
street and got hit by a car. Janet is
having a hard time getting a marriage license
on such a short notice. Elizabeth found
a priest who would marry them, but it will not
be legally binding. Luka makes it down
to the ER and Kerry speaks to him. She
tells him that leaving them short staff
without calling in is grounds for dismissal.
She knows that he has been through as lot and
tells him to go home and rest. Abby
chases after him. She tells him that she
is concerned about him, but he does not want
to talk. He walks away. Carter
learns that Trent died. They were unable
to save him. Emma is upset with Carter.
It was his fault that they had the fight.
He should have never told him that he had HIV.
Tom and Janet tie the knot with Mark and
Elizabeth looking on. Elizabeth tells
Mark that she could care less about the fancy
wedding plans, she just wants a nice ceremony
like theirs. Kerry tells Peter that ER
management is not his best skill. Peter
goes to tend to an elderly black woman who has
waited three hours to see a doctor. She
talks to him for a while and tells him that
she would prefer to see a white doctor.
He tells her sure, but it will be another
three hour wait. Kerry sees Carter and
is concerned about him. She does not
want him going home alone after such a hard
day. She tells him to wait a few minutes
and they can go get something to eat. He
agrees. Peter goes to Doc Magoo's to eat
and joins Cleo there. He tells her that
his day in the ER was a bad reflection on him.
She tells him that she has been having a hard
time lately, but she hasn't had anybody around
to talk to. He has not been there for
her. She would rather not even listen to
his problems. Abby goes to see Luka.
He opens the door and she tells him that they
do not have to talk. They then kiss.
