Peter
calls around trying to find a new job, but
Romano has been telling everyone not to hire
him. Cleo tells him to be patient, but
Peter don't want to hear about it. Kerry
tells Carter that he can handle a few traumas
now. His first patient is a large sized
homeless man who is suffering from hypothermia
and has fallen out of a tree in the park.
Malucci is needed someone to play hockey for
his team. He asks Carter, but he is not
interested. Mark tells him that he can
play, but Malucci isn't interested.
Carter's patient crashes and they have to
shock his heart. When they do, pigeons
fly out of his coat. A bunch of young
contestants from the Miss Tri-State Beauty
Pageant are brought in after a beauty salon
explosion. Mark takes care of Miss
Skokie, Audrey, who is concerned about the
burns on her leg and her swim suit modeling.
Jing-Mei's mom calls and she tries to avoid
her, but she has to speak with her anyways.
Benton is told by Dr. Gottschalk, with whom he
wanted a position, that he will have a hard
time finding work locally because of Romano.
A 72 year old man named Archie Mellonston is
brought in from a nursing home and is confused
and disoriented. Kerry tends to his
care. Jing-Mei takes care of a young
boy, Kenneth Stein, who is brought in by his
mother. His liver and spleen are
enlarged and he is terminally ill. She
knows that he needs surgery, but the hospital
will not do it because it would probably kill
him. She tells the mother that if they
could remove his spleen that he might be
better for a while. Luka sees Abby again
in the drug lockup room. He picks a
pigeon feather out of her hair. She asks
him out and he tells her that tonight would be
good. Peter comes to speak with Romano.
Romano offers him a per-diem job, but Peter
"kindly" tells him that he is not
interested. Kerry speaks with Dr. Kim
Legaspi about her patient Archie. Peter
goes to Kerry about wanting to work in the ER
as a surgeon, but she tells him that Romano
would have to find the money for it.
Romano tells Jing-Mei that he will not do the
surgery on her young, terminally ill patient.
He tells her that he needs to die in piece.
Jing-Mei tells the mother and she will not
accept that for the answer. Luka and
Carter work on a woman with multiple gun shot
wounds to the chest. Kerry sees that
Archie is watching them work on the patient.
She goes out to speak with him and tells him
that he has lost his bed at the nursing home.
Dr. Kim Legaspi is going to try to get him in
to the Veteran's hospital, but Archie tells
her that he will not go. He hugs and
begs Kerry not to let them take him there.
Carter saves the patient that he and Luka were
working on. She is going to be okay.
Kerry learns from Kim that Archie is
AWOL from the Korean war. If he goes to
the VA, then he will most likely be court
marshaled. Peter goes to speak with
Elizabeth. She apologizes for dodging
his phone calls, but she didn't know what to
say to him about losing his job. He
wants her to put in a good word for him around
Chicago. As they are talking, Shirley
tells him that he is needed in the ER.
Jackie has brought Jesse, his nephew, in to be
seen. He has been in a fight. A
young girl comes in to the room where Carter
is looking after the woman whom he had saved.
She asks how she is doing and Carter tells her
that she is improving. She tells him
that she is her sister and then the girl pulls
out a gun and blows her brains out.
Carter gets splattered with blood, but he did
not get hit. The girl ran out of the
room as the others come to see what has
happened. Carter walks out of the room.
This was another brush with death for him and
he is shaken and upset. Luka finds
Carter in the restroom cleaning off the blood.
Luka tells him to take the rest of the day off
and to go home, Carter does. Jackie
tells Peter that Jesse is not the same good
kid he use to be. He is fighting with
Walt and disrespecting the family. She
wants Peter to have a talk with him.
Malucci goes to Mark and tells him that he can
play in his game. Mark must have
impressed him by playing hockey in the ER with
a pair of crutches with him. Kim has
good news for Kerry. She has taken the
social security number off of a cadaver and
gave it to Archie. He is able to get
into a home now. Kerry does not want to
hear anymore about what she has done.
Mark has a makeup artist come to work on his
pageant patient. She is use to working
on dead people, but she will probably do a
good job on her. Carter is punching a
bag at home. He is still staying with
his Gamma and she is concerned about him.
She wants him to leave the ER and start a
practice, but Carter is not interested in
that. He tells her that he is going to
be okay. She replies that he does not
owe the ER anything. Luka and Abby go on
their date. They end up at a bar playing
foosball, which Abby beats him in. They
have a drink, she has club soda, and Luka
tells her that he lives in a hotel. He
treats tourists that come in and he gets his
room for free or at a cheaper rate. He
reaches over and kisses her, then they go play
some more games. Peter talks with
Jessie. Jesse tells Peter that he is a
man now and peter tells him that he needs to
still treat his parents with respect.
Elizabeth comes in and tells him that she has
found him a job at Hahnemann Hospital in
Philadelphia as an attending. He thanks
this is great news and he hugs her. Cleo
walks up and wants to know what the good news
is about and he tells her. He tells her
that it is only a one hour flight away, but
she is not happy about it. Luka and Abby
leave the bar after he loses to her again.
As they are walking down the sidewalk a man
comes up behind them and clubs Luka over the
head and knocks him down. He asks for
Abby's purse and Luka gets up and knocks the
mugger down to the ground. He
continually beats his head against the
pavement until Abby tells him to stop.
Carter comes back in to work to finish his
shift out. Kerry tells him to take it
easy and no more traumas for the night.
Luka and Abby come in with the paramedics and
the mugger he has beaten. He has a major
head trauma and Carter goes to take care of
him. Peter goes to see Carla at her
restaurant. He tells her about his new
job and that he wants to work out Reese's
visitation schedule. Carla tells him
that he can not get visitation rights if he
leaves Chicago. She reminds him of the
trouble he caused when Roger was wanting to
move to Germany. The police come to
speak to Abby and Luka about what had happened
with the mugger. The police tell him
that it looks like self defense. Cleo
comes to take a look at Luka's head that was
cut, but he does not want nobody touching him.
Peter gives in and goes to see Romano about a
job. Carter and Elizabeth do all that
they can, but the mugger dies. Luka
walks out and Abby goes after him, but he
leaves the ER.

DR. BENTON IS BENT ON SAVING
HIS CAREER -- A frustrated Dr. Benton (Eriq La
Salle) desperately searches for a new position
at any local hospital but soon learns that he
has been blackballed by the arrogant Dr. Romano
(Paul McCrane), and he must consider other
options out-of-state -- even though he risks
losing joint custody of his infant son with the
combative mother (guest star Lisa Nicole
Carson). Elsewhere, a recovering Dr. Carter
(Noah Wyle) is cleared to work on a few trauma
patients while Dr. Chen (Ming-Na) labors to
offer a young mother (guest star Cynthia Mann
Jamin) some temporary relief as she tries to
secure permission to operate on the woman's
terminally ill young son. Abby (Maura Tierney)
finds herself attracted to Dr. Kovac (Goran
Visnjic) but their budding relationship is
interrupted by tragedy. In addition, Dr. Malucci
(Erik Palladino) casts about in a vain search
for an extra skilled hockey player for his
team's game that night -- even though Dr. Greene
(Anthony Edwards) is ready and willing to strap
on his skates. Laura Innes, Alex Kingston and
Michael Michele also star.

startling violence, both in and out of the ER.
Archie, who's recently started speaking as if he
were back in the Korean War, is brought in for
treatment and Weaver takes an interest in him.
Meanwhile, the clash between Benton and Romano
reaches a surprising climax, and Greene gets
special help for a pageant contestant who was
injured at a beauty salon.
