Dr.
Romano tells Jing-Mei and Kerry that he is
working with in the ER today with the little
people. Two men come in from an
automobile accident. They end up in a
fist fight and Malucci, Jing-Mei, some
paramedics and some others have to get them to
an exam room. They continue arguing and
Terry grabs a pen out of Romano's pocket and
stabs Randall through the cheek with it.
Now Romano knows how it is with the little
people. A young woman named Angie, with
Sanfilippo's syndrome, is brought in by her
foster mother, Mrs. Dwyer. Angie is not
expected to live long. Kerry takes care
of her. Kerry thinks she may have
pneumonia and an infection. Mrs. Dwyer
goes to get some of Angie's things. Mark
goes with his father to his doctor's
appointment. Mark is treating him like a
child. David tells Mark that he wants
his own place. Mark does not like the
idea. Eddie Bernero, the boy with type
II diabetes ("The Peace Of Wild
Things"), is brought back to the ER by
the paramedics. Cleo thinks that he may
have meningitis or encephalitis. She has
them pull his old records to see if there has
been a problem before. Cleo thinks that
he may be diabetic. When she gets his
chart she sees that he was in for
gastroenteritis. The boy goes into a
hyperosmolar coma. She sees that a urine
dip or blood glucose was not ordered when he
was there earlier and she sees that Carter had
taken care of him. She then remembers
the case. His father did not have any
insurance and Carter doctored the charts until
his insurance was available on his new job.
She calls for Carter. Carter does not
recognize him and Cleo refreshes his memory.
She knows that he must have fixed his chart.
Carter denies it. She tells him that she
will not cover for him if questions are asked.
Mrs. Dwyer returns to find Kerry and Carol
trying to give her an IV. They are
having a hard time so Kerry suggests a central
line, but she finds out that Mrs. Dwyer
is not her legal guardian. They could
not afford the medical bills, so she belongs
to the Department of Children and Family
Services (D.C.F.S.). Cleo gets Peter to come down
for a surgical consult on her patient, Mr.
Grunwald. He has been taking codeine for
back pain and now has abdominal pain. Cleo
thinks that he may have a bowel obstruction..
Peter checks him out and does not think it is
surgical, so he has Cleo to tell him to take a
lesser dose of codeine and he writes him a
prescription for bisacodyl. This will
help him with his constipation caused from the
codeine. Cleo gets distracted by another
patient and she forgets about Mr. Grunwald
He comes to look for her and she gives him his
prescription without looking to make sure it
is correct. Luka examines potential
patients for a kidney transplant for Corday.
He has a hard time finding the right patient
who is qualified for the transplant.
Kerry has Adele to find out about consent for
the central line, but they say that Angie is a
lost cause and does not need it. Kerry
gets Mark to sign an emergency consent order
that would allow them to do it, but Mark does
it hesitantly. Deb takes care of
Terry Waters and asks his daughter, Jo, if he
is always the irritable. She tells her
that she has never seen him like this.
Deb orders some tests. Lily finds Cleo
and she tells her that Mr. Grunwald has been
brought back after collapsing at home.
Dr. Carter and Romano are working on him.
There are problems with his heart. They
ask to se his medicine and it is bisoprolol
and not bisacodyl as she had prescribed.
This is causing his problems. She tells
him that Peter had written the prescription
for her. Peter's writing was hard to
read, so the pharmacy made a mistake.
Romano gets Peter and Cleo together for a
chewing out. Romano tells Cleo that she
should have read the label before giving it to
them. Romano tells them that they can
not write any more prescriptions until further
notice. Peter then chews Cleo out.
Carter goes to visit Eddie in the ICU and he
speaks with Mr. Bernero. He does not
want to take responsibility for his son's
condition, so he blames it all on Carter.
Carter tells him that he is the parent and he
should look after his child. Luka finds
out that his next candidate for the transplant
is pregnant. She has been trying to
conceive for two years and wants to keep the
baby instead of getting the kidney after
learning that the drugs may harm the baby.
Elizabeth asks Mark about his father and he
tells her to mind her own business.
Kerry finds Romano in the room with Angie
looking at her chart. He refers to her as a
pet and tells Kerry no central line!
Mark and Jing-Mei tell Terry that he may have
an inherited disease called Huntington's
chorea. It is a neurological disorder
and he cam pass it on to his kids just as his
father had passed it on to him. He had
told Jing-Mei that his father had committed
suicide. She tells him that he should
tell Jo, his daughter. He does not want
her to know. Carter tells Mark that he
is living with his grandparents. Mark
asks Carter if there is anything he wants to
tell him about the Bernero boy. Carter
tells him that he must have made a mistake.
A man named Steve comes in after being paged.
He had just gotten home from a movie and he
turned his transplant pager on and it went
off. They do his lab work and he tested
positive for cocaine. Luka confronts him
and is angry. He tells him that he will
not get the kidney. Carol catches Kerry
doing the central line on Angie. She
asks Carol to leave so that she can do it
alone and be held responsible for it alone.
Jing-Mei releases Terry to go home. He
has not told Jo or her fiancée about his
illness. Elizabeth is upset with Luka
when she finds out about Steve. She does
not want the kidney to go to waste. If
another patient can not be found, them he will
get the kidney. Romano comes back to
check on Angie (really checking on Kerry).
Mrs. Dwyer thanks him for letting Kerry do the
procedure. He acts nice towards her and
then he leaves the room looking for Kerry.
He finds her and he tells her to sign off all
cases and go home. She has been
suspended until further notice. Peter
goes to see Cleo at her house. She is
working out and he apologizes for the chewing
out he gave her earlier. She tells him
that it was a lame apology and she walks to go
to take a shower. She then asks him to
join her, but they only make it to the stairs.
Luka goes to Carol's and they are grilling
out. They chat a while and then it
snows. It is April and Carol is
surprised by the snow. Mark goes home
and tells his dad that there isn't any room
left at the hospice, that there is a waiting
list. It looks as if he will have to
stay with Mark.

NBC Review
DR. KOVAC AGONIZES OVER
CRUCIAL DECISIONS AFFECTING KIDNEY PATIENTS --
Dr. Kovac (Goran Visnjic) is unsettled about his
responsibility to disqualify a series of
patients with kidney failure when a precious
donor organ becomes available, especially when
one prospect (guest star Leslie Paramedic Silva, NBC's
"Providence") is unaware that she's pregnant --
and must choose between the baby or the
transplant operation. A few feet away, Dr.
Romano (Paul McCrane) decides to mix it up for a
day in the ER trenches and clashes with two
angry motorists (guest stars Mitch Pileggi, "The
X-Files," and Ransford Doherty) as well as Dr.
Weaver (Laura Innes) over proper treatment of a
terminally ill pneumonia patient (guest star
Rachel Roth). Dr. Carter (Noah Wyle) must do
some fast-talking when a former patient, a
diabetic young boy (guest star Ben Hecht) whose
father previously had no insurance, reappears
with dangerous symptoms. Drs. Finch (Michael
Michele) and Benton (Eriq La Salle) are dressed
down by Romano when a pharmacy misreads their
scribbled prescription and issues a drug that
nearly kills a constipated patient (guest star
Jack Shearer). Dr. Greene (Anthony Edwards) gets
angry when Dr. Corday (Alex Kingston) conspires
with his crotchety father (guest star John
Cullum) to place the senior Greene in a hospice.
Julianna Margulies, Ming-Na, Erik Palladino and
Maura Tierney also star.

TV Guide Review
April 6, 2000: Viable Options: Various
would-be recipients are in line for an organ
transplant; Weaver disregards an order from
Romano because she feels sorry for a patient's
mother (Patty McCormack); Greene and
Corday clash over his father's treatment.

TNT Review
Chen's patient refuses
to reveal to his daughter that she might have
inherited a terrible disease from him. Weaver
defies Romano's authority and suffers the
consequences. And Kovac can't find a suitable
candidate for a kidney that's ready for
transplant.
