David
Greene is trying to repair an old slide
projector. Mark tells his dad that he is
concerned about his medical condition.
Mark is reminded by his dad that his cancer is
inoperable. Elizabeth's mother is
packing her bags for her return home. During
the packing, Elizabeth finds a sock and some
shorts that belong to David Greene.
Isabelle tells Elizabeth how much she enjoyed
David Greene and tells her that he is very
much like his son. She thinks that
Elizabeth and Mark are good together.
They agree to meet later at the hospital for
coffee before she leaves. Carter returns
to work. He is using crutches to help
him get around. He still seems to be in
a lot of pain. Mark arrives at the
hospital to find that he is the only Attending
working and the place is very busy and rooms
are few. Mark grabs a cart and a
cordless phone and he has Carter, Jing-Mei,
Malucci and Abby follow him to the patients.
He goes to each one and calls out the order to
the nurses over the phone. He then goes
to the lounge for some coffee and he finds
Carol in the lounge pumping breast milk for
the twins. She later sees Malucci eating
Captain Crunch cereal with the milk that she
had pumped. Mark and Carol take care of
a baby named Estrella. The baby is not
responsive and Mark does not know what is
causing it. The baby dies and the lab
results reveal that she has amphetamines in
her blood system. The babies mother,
Pilar, tells Mark and Carol that she works two
jobs and takes medicine to keep her going.
Carol asks her if she is breast-feeding and
the woman says yes and starts crying.
She loved her baby and would never hurt her.
Elizabeth is in the ER when David Greene is
brought in complaining of shortness of breath.
He tells Mark that he wants Elizabeth to be
his doctor. Elizabeth learns how very
sick he is. She asks him what his wishes
are and he tells her that he just wants to
live his remaining time out of the hospital
and at home. Mark doesn't like to hear
this. An ICU nurse comes down to the ER
after fainting while on duty. Dr. Chen
tells him that they must run some tests to
make sure that he is okay to return to work.
He helps out in the ER while waiting for his
lab results. Malucci seems to be a
little jealous because Deb seems to like him.
Jing-Mei learns that he has Addison's Disease.
Elizabeth had been working on an 18 year old
gun shot victim named Robert Jackson. He
was brought in brain dead and she wants his
organs for donations. Nobody is able to
find his parents for consent and he dies
without donating his organs. Carter does
not get around in the trauma rooms and he
keeps getting in the way. This is very
aggravating to him and he is still in a lot of
pain. When Kerry comes in for her shift,
she asks him how he is and he replies that he
is doing fine. She tells him of a couple
of treatments that might help with his pain,
but he doesn't seem to care. She wants
to know if he has talked with anyone
concerning how he is feeling. He doesn't
reply. He goes to his gamma's for some
soup and for some company. She can see
now that medicine is what he loves. Abby
takes care of Mr. Kim Tadlock, a patient that
was admitted with colon cancer. His
cancer seems to be spreading. Abby
performs a procedure on him without Mark's
supervision and she makes things worse.
She has perforated his colon and Benton tells
him that it is a known complication of the
procedure. Peter wants to do surgery,
but Mr. Tadlock decides against it.
He ends up dying later. When Abby
explains to Mark the complications resulting
from her mistake, Mark tells her to work with
Dr. Upton after her shift to practice her
procedures. She does go, but she has a
hard time doing the procedure because the dead
body she has to work on is Mr. Tadlock's (what
irony). Dr. Corday didn't get to have
the coffee with her mother, because she had
taken an earlier flight. Benton and Cleo
are still seeing each other and they finally
kiss over playing pool. Carol has a new
nanny for the twins and she receives calls all
day. She even has to sing a song over
the phone to get Kate to quit crying. (I
haven't heard Carol sing since a Christmas
episode during Season 2). Carol ends up
having the nanny drop off Kate and Tess at the
hospital for a visit. Mark and his dad
go home and they get to view the slides.

A HURTING DR. CARTER RETURNS
TO ER WHILE DR. GREENE COPES WITH CRUSH OF
PATIENTS -- In pain, Dr. Carter (Noah Wyle)
hobbles back on crutches into the ER for the
first time since his life-threatening attack and
treats an overdosed suicidal patient (guest star
Keith Langsdale) with a controversial new
procedure while a besieged Dr. Greene (Anthony
Edwards) tries to take charge of a chaotic
shift. Among Greene's runaway problems are his
cantankerous father (guest star John Cullum) who
resists treatment for his lung cancer, a
poisonous Gila monster lizard on the loose and a
non-stop torrent of complicated cases, one of
which concerns his girlfriend Dr. Corday's (Alex
Kingston) well-meaning attempt to keep a
brain-dead accident victim alive long enough to
secure permission to harvest his organs.
Elsewhere, Abby (Maura Tierney) is devastated
when she makes a simple mistake that could cost
a terminally ill cancer patient (guest star Cal
Gibson) what little time he has left; Dr. Chen
(Ming-Na) is distracted by a hunky nurse (guest
star Morris Chestnut, "Boyz N the Hood") who
helps out in between receiving treatment for his
own fainting spells; amid the uproar, Hathaway (Julianna
Margulies) is interrupted by her nanny's calls
regarding her crying twins; and Dr. Benton (Eriq
La Salle) and Dr. Finch (Michael Michele) enjoy
a sensual game of pool. Laura Innes, Goran
Visnjic and Erik Palladino also star.
