The flu is going around and Malucci and Weaver are both sick with it.  Malucci asks Kerry to let him go home, but she refuses.  She later goes home herself.  A new third year med student named Abby Lockhart starts her ER rotation.  She was Carol's OB nurse and Carol thinks she is down to help out as a nurse, but she is wrong.  Abby jokes about having crossed over to the dark side.  Carter takes care of a boy named Darnel who is in a wheelchair who is brought in after being pushed down the stairs by another boy at school. He has muscular dystrophy (MD) and is tired of everyone trying to help him.  The boy who pushed him down, Marty, is taken care of by Cleo.  She notices that he has track marks all over his body.  He tells her that he has been taking Human Growth Hormones that he has been buying off of the internet.  He doesn't like being short and he is tired of being picked on.  He has been using the same needle that his grandmother uses to inject her insulin and he  has gotten an infection around his heart.  Elizabeth's mother is in town to give a lecture and hasn't even called to see her.  A man high on PCP is brought in with two broken legs after jumping out of a three story window.  Abby is bitten by him.  Peter has to cancel a plastic surgery for a little girl who had been bitten on the face by a dog, because Romano will not approve it.  A man comes in with Flu symptoms and Malucci and Corday misdiagnose him.  He ends up bleeding out and has to be rushed to surgery.  During the surgery, Dr. Romano passes out and Benton has to take over.  He  ends up with a high fever and a kidney stone.  He owes Peter a favor now, so he lets him do the operation on the little girl's face.  Lucy takes care of a homeless man who has congestive heart failure.  She wants to help, but he wants to just die in a warm bed with clean sheets.  He wants her to take his lunch box and throw out $118.00 off of the roof for his friends to find after he dies.  Luka and Carol take care of a little boy who has had several surgeries.  Carol suspects that the mother has been causing him health problems for attention.  With Abby's help, they catch her trying to harm the little boy.  Elizabeth  goes to see her mother.  They sit and talk and she tells her about Mark.  She invites her to stay with her and she accepts.  Abby is on the roof when Lucy comes up.  They introduce each other to one another and throw the money off of the roof.

NBC Review

MAURA TIERNEY ("NEWSRADIO") JOINS REGULAR CAST AS MEDICAL STUDENT -- New medical student Abby Lockhart (new series regular Maura Tierney, "NewsRadio"), the obstetrics nurse who helped deliver Nurse Hathaway's (Julianna Margulies) twins, has a chaotic first day when she joins the ER and is spat upon and bitten by a drug-addled teenage wrestler (guest star Eric Nenninger) and misdiagnoses a hypochondriac (guest star Michael Mantell). Dr. Corday (Alex Kingston) grits her teeth when her haughty mother (guest star Judy Parfitt, "Ever After") alights in town. Elsewhere, as a flu epidemic sweeps through the ER, Dr. Benton's (Eriq La Salle) promise to secure plastic surgery for a badly mauled little girl (guest star Chaz Monet) is in jeopardy and he later uses an unusual procedure to clear an airway on a patient (guest star Victor Campos) with internal bleeding. Dr. Carter (Noah Wyle) treats a bitter teenager (guest star Shia LaBeouf) with muscular dystrophy. Lucy (Kellie Martin) tries to make an elderly patient (guest star Pierrino Mascarino) with congestive heart failure comfortable in his last hours. Anthony Edwards, Laura Innes, Paul McCrane, Goran Visnjic, Michael Michele, Ming-Na and Erik Palladino also star.

TV Guide Review

February 3, 2000: Abby Road: A new med student starts in the ER during an outbreak of flu cases in this well-scripted episode. Abby Lockhart (Maura Tierney), a third-year med student, has an awkward beginning to her ER rotation when Hathaway recalls Abby as the nurse who helped in the delivery of her second twin and mistakenly thinks that she's switching nursing assignments. Meanwhile, Romano and Bentonclash over a scheduled surgery; a young mother (Giuliana Santini) seeks help for her baby; two teens (Shia LaBeouf, Christopher Marquette) are treated following a school altercation; and Corday's mother (Judy Parfitt) comes to town.

TNT Review

Obstetrics nurse and third-year medical student Abby Lockhart realizes that life in the er is far different than she expected. Romano is indebted to Benton.
