It
has really been raining all day and a nursing
home has caught on fire. Some of the
people are brought to the ER. Kerry has
everyone called in that is off. Peter
tells Jackie about Carla telling him that
Reece may not be his. Carol goes to see
Meg at the pharmacy where she helped her get a
job. She finds her out back with a shady
looking character. Meg doesn't have much
to say to her. Andrew, a desk clerk,
comes down to help in the ER. Gabe comes
in to work. Haleh helps Malucci diagnose
a patient with pneumonia. Weaver wants
Jeanie to come in to work. Mark is blown
to the floor from a gas explosion in the ER.
He is okay, but someone left a burner on in
the suture room. Dr. Finch seems to be
the last one who used it. The nurses
find a pair of glasses in the freezer.
They happen to belong to Dr. Lawrence.
Kerry is concerned, so she goes to Gabe's
previous employer to ask about him. She
learns of his condition and that he may cause
harm to his patients. Kerry
tells Mark about it and tells him that it
would be too hard for her to fire him.
Benton gets Reece and takes him into an empty
exam room to do there DNA testing. Carol
gets Reggie's help by staking out the back of
the pharmacy. They catch Meg buying
drugs and she and the drug dealer are
arrested. Meg sees that Carol is in the
police car and she cusses her out.
Malucci learns that Finch could be fired
because of the explosion. He tells Kerry
that there is a chance that he was the last
one to use the burner. She tells him
that it was a gas explosion and not his fault,
but for him to be more careful from now on.
Kerry and Mark use a worker from the hospital
to act like a patient of Dr. Lawrence that he
has forgotten about. Mark tells him that
he has forgotten about her and he writes her a
prescription. Kerry pulls him to the
side and he sees the lady taking off her
bandages, she is okay.
Gabe feels very
betrayed and mad, so he storms out.
Jeanie comes in to see what Kerry needed.
She tells her that she is quitting because she
wants to stay home with the baby. She
has never been happier. Kerry tells her
that she will always have a job there if she
wants it back. Benton takes Reece back
to Carla. He tells her that there was no
need to see the results of the DNA testing.
He knows Reece is his, "Please don't take
my son away from me". Carol gets a
surprise baby shower. Dr. Lawrence comes
back to speak with Kerry. He recites a
long William Blake poem, "Peace of Wild
Things"' that he learned 30 years ago.
He can't understand why he can remember that
and not a patient he saw 15 minutes ago.
Kerry wants to get him help. He already
has seen a doctor and knows that he is
bi-polar. He breaks Kerry's heart and
she cries. Jeanie cleans out her locker and leaves.

HATHAWAY'S HELP REBUFFED BY
PREGNANT WOMAN; ALAN ALDA, REBECCA DEMORNAY
GUEST-STAR -- Hathaway (Julianna Margulies)
can't resist trying to help a fellow single
pregnant woman (guest star Martha Plimpton) who
refuses to quit her unhealthy lifestyle and
seems resigned to her fate, while Dr. Weaver
(Laura Innes) questions the work of her former
mentor, Dr. Lawrence (guest star Alan Alda). Dr.
Benton (Eriq La Salle) agonizes over taking a
self-administered paternity test that will
determine if he really is the father of his
toddler son. Dr. Finch (Michael Michele) is
blamed for an explosion in the suture room but
Dr. Malucci (Erik Palladino) might have a
different answer. After a nursing home fire, Dr.
Carter (Noah Wyle) is chastised for not
convincing a frightened older woman (guest star
Amzie Strickland) to sign a consent form that
would let her terminally ill husband die. Later,
Carter is torn when a poor father (guest star
Tom McGowan) asks him not to report that his son
has diabetes until his worker's insurance kicks
in, and after hours, he visits the moody Elaine
(guest star Rebecca DeMornay). Elsewhere: a
beaming Jeanie (Gloria Reuben) has startling
news for Weaver, and a new desk clerk (guest
star Andrew Bowen) overcomes a rough beginning
to his day and soon has the staff in stitches
with his comic impressions. Anthony Edwards,
Alex Kingston, Kellie Martin and Paul McCrane
also star.
