Dr.
Amanda Lee has started a new charting system
and Jerry is not too happy about it. He
now has double the charts to keep up with.
Elizabeth will be joining Romano at a surgical
gala for the holidays. Mark isn't having
a very good day. His car has broken down
and Jen has sent all the staff a Christmas
card and the newsletter from her family.
They have a nice new home and she has made
partner and has bought a new BMW. Jerry
catches Dr. Lee snooping around Mark's locker.
Dr. Corday speaks with a patient named David
about his prostate surgery. She tells
him that he may want to visit a sperm bank
before the surgery. Carter gets a
Christmas card from a patient he does not
remember. He saved this patient's life
and Lucy calls him an "instrument of
God". Lucy tells him that she is
agnostic. An eighteen year old boy named
Steven Richards has been brought in
unconscious. He went to bed with a bad
headache and he never woke up. Carter
goes to speak to his mother, Mrs. Richards.
She tells him that her son is all that she
has. Doug is ready to call the time of
death on him, but Carter tells him to give him
one more try. They shock him and they
get a heart rhythm. Doug tells Carter
that his brain is probably mush by now.
David ends up in the ER after suffering an
anxiety attack. Kerry recognizes him as
a trumpet soloist from the Chicago symphony.
He later tells Elizabeth that the attack was
due to knowing that his sperm donation was
going to be his last sexual task. Mark's
gloves are missing and Jerry tells him and
Kerry about seeing Amanda snooping around his
locker earlier. Amanda tells Mark that
this is her first Christmas since her brother
committed suicide. Steven's mom is
hoping for a miracle. Mark has a young
patient named Laura who has just found out
that she is pregnant. She is only
thirteen years old. Carol speaks with
her and she decides that an abortion is her
best option. Carol has her speak with a
priest about it. A sixteen year old girl
is brought in. She has liver failure and
needs a transplant. She happens to have
the same blood type as Steven. Peter has
an over weight patient that he and Yosh are
tending to. He has eaten so much that he
has blown a staple from a stomach tuck that he
had received earlier. Carter speaks with
Steven's mom about organ donation, but she
does not want to donate his organs.
Peter takes his obese patient up to the OR.
He has to start without an attending present.
Romano shows up and tries to kick him out of
the OR, but he is drunk and Peter has to ask
him to leave. He goes to hit Peter, but
he misses and falls and knocks himself out.
Romano was upset because Elizabeth had never
showed up for their date. She had went
out with David instead. Mark is now
missing his lab coat. Amanda has ordered
a lot of food for an impromptu Christmas
party. Stephen's mom bumped in to the
girl's mom who need the transplant. She
has decided to donate the liver from Steven.
Lucy introduced them to each other and Carter
is happy about it. Romano tells Benton
that he is writing him up for operating
without an attending. Peter tells him
that if he does that, he will submit Romano's
blood test that shows his blood alcohol level
was .12. Peter was unable to get home in
time to see Reese, so Carla brought him by.
Amanda is home alone decorating her Christmas
tree. She is in Mark's lab coat and she
is hanging ornaments with her and Mar's
picture on them. She is putting his
gloves on and says, "Merry Christmas
Amanda".

NBC Review
T'WAS THE NIGHT BEFORE
CHRISTMAS IN THE ER - On Christmas Eve, Dr.
Carter (Noah Wyle) pulls off a miracle when he
revives an 18-year-old boy who's been flat-lined
for over 30 minutes. However, when it is
discovered that the boy is brain dead, his
mother (guest star Laurie O'Brien) refuses to
give up hope that her son will be fine. When
another teenager with the same rare blood type
comes into the ER in need of a liver transplant,
Carter attempts to salvage the Christmas
miracle. Meanwhile, a cranky old man in an elf
suit (guest star Cork Hubbert) tests Dr.
Greene's (Anthony Edwards) patience. Dr.
Benton's (Eriq La Salle) plans to spend
Christmas Eve with his son are hampered by Dr.
Romano (guest star Paul McCrane), who dumps his
workload on him so that he can attend a hospital
function with Dr. Corday (Alex Kingston). George
Clooney, Julianna Margulies, Gloria Reuben,
Laura Innes and Kellie Martin also star. Mare
Winningham guest-stars.

TV Guide Review
December 17, 1998: The Miracle Worker:
Carter tries to work his own miracle in this
emotional holiday episode. An 18-year-old boy
who suffered a brain hemorrhage that caused his
heart to stop is brought in on Christmas Eve.
The paramedics revived him once, only to lose
him. Ross's luck isn't any better when he
attempts to get the teen's heart started again,
but Carter wants to keep trying. "You got a
reason to keep floggin' this kid?" Ross asks.
"Yeah," says Carter. "He's 18, he's his mother's
only child, and it's Christmas." But, as Carter
learns, miracles don't always turn out quite as
expected. Meanwhile, a pregnant 13-year-old must
decide whether to keep her baby.

TNT Review
Carter urges a woman to
donate her brain-dead son's liver to another
