A little girl named Corinna is brought in by her father, Mr. Sawyer after they were in a car accident.  Carter and Lucy tend to them and he has Lucy suture Mr. Sawyer.  Corinna has injured her spleen and will need surgery.  Mr. Sawyer tells Lucy that she had better call Corinna's mother.  Corinna crashes and Mark and Peter ask Lucy to ask the father what her blood type is, but he is gone.  Lucy contacts Corinna's mother in Cleveland and learns that her father had kidnapped her.  Corinna's last name is Nelson.  Corinna's blood is hard to match and it will be nearly impossible to transfuse her unless they can find her father, who happens to be the perfect match.  Her mom is coming to Chicago.  Carol called Doug to come take a look at Corinna.  Carter and Roxanne are  suppose to be going sailing after his shift is over.  Lucy's shift is over, so she tells Carter that she is going to find Mr. Nelson.  She has an address that he has left with the hospital.  Benton needs the blood to be able to operate on Corinna's spleen.  Roxanne comes to get Carter for sailing, but he is busy speaking with a cop.  The cop tells him that the plates on Nelson's car was from a used car rental at Western and Addison.  Corinna wakes up asking about her daddy.  They keep telling her that her mommy is on her way, but she keeps wanting her daddy.  She starts having seizures.  Carter goes to the boat with Roxanne, but he can not keep his mind off of what is going on back at the ER.  He leaves Roxanne on the boat and he heads to the rental car lot.  The dealer there tells Carter quietly, that Nelson is his bookie.  He then tells him of a hotel where he can find more information from a bellhop there.  Carter heads to the Delaware hotel to look for the bellhop who places the bets for Nelson.  Carter arrives to find that Lucy is already there.  They look for a guy named Toby, but find out that he had been fired.  A guy from a meat packing plant should know where Toby is.  He is the one who found Toby the job at the hotel.  They both head to the meat packing plant, where Carter admits that it is Lucy's fault that this is all happening, because she didn't keep her eyes on Nelson and she let him walk out of the ER.  They find the man there that knows Toby's address and they head to see Toby.  Bento talks with Anspaugh about having to operate without blood.  Two units of blood are being flown in from Nashville.  Corinna's mother finally arrives at the ER, but her blood is not a match.  They still need to find the father.  Carter and Lucy end up at a housing project.  Lucy finds Toby's sister and Carter hears a cough coming from next door.  He sees a little boy sitting out front and asks about the cough coming from inside.  A little girl next door to them tells Carter that it is Mrs. Price coughing inside.  Carter tells the little girl to watch the boy as he goes inside.  The little girl warns him about going in to a home without being invited, but Carter tracks in anyways.  The woman inside tells him that she only has bronchitis, but Carter sees that she is coughing up blood.  He tells her that she has probably got TB and needs to be tested.  Carter goes to call 911, but a man comes inside wanting to know why he entered the house and why he is there.  Peter takes Corinna to the OR.  He is going to perform surgery without the blood.  Carter and Lucy are outside waiting for an ambulance to come and get Mrs. Price when Lucy sees Mr. Nelson up at the train.  They run after him, but Carter gets stopped by security for not buying a ticket.  Nelson gets on the train and it leaves.  Carter throws the $1.50 for the ticket at the guard and tells him that he has just caused a little girl her life.  Corday gets the blood off of the helicopter that flew it in from Nashville.  Toby has arrived and he tells Carter and Lucy about Nelson's uncle Joey.  He works at Soldiers Field.  Lucy and Carter head there to find him.  The blood that was flown in can not be used.  There were small holes in the bags when they were thawed and they could be contaminated and cause her to be septic.  Lucy and Carter find uncle Joey, who everyone calls uncle, and he tells them about a cockfight.  It is Thursday and Nelson always goes to the cockfight on Thursday.  They will find him there.  Lucy and Carter have to park his jeep and jump a fence to get to the location of the cockfight.  Carter tells Lucy that she is the only student he has had that showed any promise.  He tells her that this whole thing was not her fault.  They can not find the cockfight, but Carter finds a hole and falls into it.  He  dislocates his shoulder.  Carter has Lucy pop it back in place, but she doesn't get it right the first time.  Lucy tells him that she respects him and that he is a good teacher.  They return to where they left the jeep and it has been torched.  They walk and end up at a food stand.  He tells Lucy to call for a cab, but she has to wait for the phone.  The cook hears the two of them argue and he asks Carter if his girlfriend (the boss) would like a drink.  Carter tells him that she is not his girlfriend.  Mark checks on Corinna before he goes home.  Peter is with her and he tells him that he did a great job.  He knows how critical Corinna is and offers to speak with her mother about her condition.  Peter agrees that he should.  Lucy got in touch with Toby and he gave her the correct address for Nelson.  They take a cab to his trailer, but he is not home.  They go inside of it anyways and hear a message on the answering machine.  Lucy tells Carter that she never knew her father.  He left when she was born.  He was only nineteen years old and could not handle the responsibility.  On the machine, they hear Nelson calling his girlfriend Inga.  He wants her to check at the hospital, and tells her he is across the street.  Carter and Lucy need to get cab fair, so they remember an ATM being across from the hospital and think about Doc Magoo's being across from the hospital.  That is where Nelson told Inga he would be, so they have the cab drive there.  They find Nelson waiting there and they head to the hospital.  He donates his blood and tells them that he would have never left if he would have known how serious it was.  He is told that it may be too late, Corinna's organs are shutting down.  Carter finds Lucy on the roof.  There are back on in an hour.  Lucy is upset and Carter puts his good arm around her.  She lays her head on his shoulder.  Carter tells her that she fought the good fight and she will fight others.
