Mark returns from San Diego and he goes by Cynthia's to give her the luggage that she had left.  He finds out that she has moved and quit her job.  Doug is preparing to present his P.C.A. research.  Elizabeth gets her 6 month evaluation from Romano and she is not too pleased with it.  A man and woman bring in their little boy after being poisoned by his half brother.  Doug blames it on the (abusive?) father, but he later learns that the burns on the half brother's arm was self inflicted.  A man is brought in by his wife with in stage lung  cancer.  Mark takes care of him.  The man ends up killing himself and this prompts Mark to quit smoking.  Carter and Del Amico treat Chase after a heroin overdose.  Chase is left in a coma and he will suffer brain damage.  Elizabeth tells Mark that she will need a sponsorship to stay in the US and that she would like to help out in the ER.  Anna takes care of a man who was transferred to the ER because he is thought to be without insurance. Del Amico thinks that his condition worsened as a result. She is angered when her colleague hesitates to treat the man because of this.  Scott Anspaugh is through with his chemo treatment and is upset to know that Jeanie will no longer be caring for him.  Carter's grandfather is very upset to know that John knew about Chase's heroin addiction and did not let him know about it.  Mark finally finds out where Cynthia is and goes to see her.

Dr. Ross (George Clooney) encounters problems with Dr. Weaver (Laura Innes) over his research grant and discovers disturbing complications in the case of a young poisoning victim. Dr. Corday (Alex Kingston) receives a performance review from Dr. Romano (Paul McCrane), then shares an awkward moment with Dr. Benton (Eriq La Salle) and his sister Jackie (Khandi Alexander).
