Doug and
Mark rent a sub compact car with no air
conditioning to drive across country to
identify the body of Doug's father. Doug
finds out that his father died in a car
accident. He was driving drunk and he
ran a stop sign while going 120 mph, killing 2
people and himself. The driver of the
truck he hit was a father of six. The
other person that was killed was with Doug's
father, Ray, and she was his wife. He
goes to where Ray was staying and goes through
his things. He finds some pawn tickets
and also finds out that Ray didn't wreck his
own car; he must having been driving his
wife's. Doug gets in the car and thinks
about his father. Him and Mark go for a
ride. Doug tells Mark that he learned
how to drive in that car. The car quits
and runs out of gas. They look in the
trunk for a gas can and find baby stuff.
He finds out that his dad has another son.
When they return to the room, Doug calls
Carol as Mark walks in to hear the tail end of
the message Doug leaves on her answering
machine. Mark wants to know who he was
calling and after a while Doug gives in and
tells him that him and Carol have been seeing
each other. Doug realizes that he is in
love with her. Doug and Mark go to Mr.
Lopez's funeral.
They
also go to the pawn shop to see what his
father has there. He finds a Rolex
watch, some rings and a movie projector.
They go back to the room and watch some old
movies of Doug, his mom and his dad.
Afterwards, Doug learns that Mark's parents
live only 4 hours away in San Diego.
Mark's mom is very excited to see him.
She fixes them some of her sweet ice tea and
then Doug leaves for a while so that Mark can
spend time with them. Mark learns that
his father is on oxygen and has emphysema and
that his mom is on high blood pressure pills.
Mark and his dad don't talk very much.
Mark tells Doug that he didn't miss much not
having a father when he was growing up.
Him and Doug argue a while about it because
Doug gets offended by it. Mark tells
Doug that the person he was died in the
bathroom last year when he was beaten and left
to die. They head back to the room and
when they arrive Carol is there waiting for
Doug. They embrace and kiss.
The
next morning they go to a mountain top and
Doug scatters his father's ashes about and
then the 3 of them drink a shot of whiskey.

November 13, 1997: Fathers and Sons:
There's no medical crisis to solve and no
patients to see in a change-of-pace episode that
sends Doug and Mark on a cathartic road trip out
West. A tragic death in Doug's family prompts
the doctors to investigate the circumstances
surrounding the incident, which in turn leads
them to a remote town along a near-deserted
stretch of California. On the way, they make an
impromptu side trip to San Diego to visit
Greene's vivacious mom (Bonnie Bartlett)
and indifferent dad (John Cullum). The
journey proves to be a revealing one for both
men, culminating in disturbing insights into
past events that shaped their characters and may
affect their futures.
