Peter
comes by Carla's early to drop some things off
that she will need for when Reese comes home.
He goes over some procedures that she may need
to know and she tells him to stop being so
morbid. She tells him to go to work.
Carol and Doug go skating together. He
refuses to wear a helmet because he doesn't
want to mess his hair up. Mark gets a
knock on his door early in the morning; it is
Jen. She is concerned about Rachel.
Rachel doesn't like being around Mark because
of the way he has been acting. Jen
tells Mark that they are both worried about
him. She is going to keep Rachel away
from him, until he is more like himself.
Carter has been listening to some motivational
tapes and he feels happy, healthy, and
terrific. Carter is introduced to two
more new students, Ivan Fu and James Sasic.
Anna lets him pick the one he wants first this
time, so he chooses Ivan. Kerry
compliments Doug on a research paper he had
done three years prior. She wants him to
update it and have it reviewed, so that he can
get some grant money to sponsor his work in
the ER. They can not continue to pay for
his services out of their budget. Mark
has a patient, Jeremy Willis, who thinks he is
an angel. Carla's friend comes with her
to pick her and the baby up to take them home
from the hospital. This makes Peter very
nervous. Elizabeth sees them and is
surprised. She had no idea that he had a
baby and a wife. He tells her that she
is not his wife. A boy with asthma is
brought in. His name is Jaime Landeta
and Anna is going to take care of him, but his
mother wants him to see Dr. Ross. Doug
comes and takes over his care. This
continues to upset Anna. Al comes in to
see Jeanie. He tells her that they let
him go at the job. They gave him a lame
excuse, but he knows that it is because he has
AIDS. He worried that he will not be
able to find another job in construction now.
Anna asks Carol why she use to date Doug.
She can't see how she put up with him.
Doris ends up back in the ER. She is
high on crack, just as she was a few episodes
back when Mark discharged her. There is
a bad accident on the freeway involving a
junior high bus. A man on a motorcycle
was being chased by the police and caused the
accident. Ten of the patients are
brought in to the ER. A girl's arm is
hanging off and she has to have surgery.
One of the kids die. Carol sees a trail
of blood leading to the ladies bathroom.
It is Doris. She is having a baby.
Carol tells her not to push, but she does and
the baby falls to the floor. When Mark
comes in, and later Peter, Doris tells them
that Carol dropped the baby. Jeanie is
taking care of a man with a collapsed lung due
to his broken ribs. She yells for a
doctor, but nobody comes. She ends up
having to reach into a cavity to save him.
Kerry walks in and is upset with her.
Doris's baby is dead. He was dead before
it was born. Peter gets upset by it and
calls to check on Reese. Mark did not
see if Carol dropped the baby or not, so he
can not say that she did or didn't.
Doris asks Carol if she will be able to still
have kids and Carol tells her yes.
Doug is about to prescribe a steroid for
Jaime's asthma, but he learns from his mother
that Jamie doesn't have asthma, but
strongyloides. The medicine that he was
going to prescribe could have hurt him.
The mother told Doug that Anna was going to
check him, but then he took over his care.
Doug goes and fusses at Anna about it, right
before he has to tell the mother of the boy
who died about her son. Carter takes
care of the guy who was driving the motorcycle
and caused the accident. He crashes and
Benton comes in on his way home and takes
over. He takes him up to surgery, where
Elizabeth takes him so that Peter can go home
to Reese. Anna tells carter that he
needs to talk to Benton about stepping in and
taking over his patients. Carter catches
up with Peter. He wants to know why he
has been acing so hateful toward him and
ignoring him. He wants Benton's respect.
Benton is hurt and angry at him for quitting
surgery and going to Anspaugh about it instead
of coming to him. Carter was afraid that
he would have tried to talk him out of
switching. Peter tells him that if he
doesn't want to be treated like his student,
then he needs to stop seeking his approval.
Carol comes to Mark and tells him that he was
the one who checked on Doris the last time she
was in the ER and that he was the one who
discharged her. She will not be able to
cover for him if she decides to sue the
hospital or him, just as he was not going to
be able to cover for Carol when she said that
she had dropped the baby. Mark tells her
that we can't help those who can't help
themselves. Carol replies, "No,
Mark. Those are exactly the people we should
be helping." Kerry reminds Jeanie
of the guidelines that she agreed to if she
was going to continue to work in the ER.. She
doesn't want anything like that to happen
again. Peter goes to see Reese. He
is in the bed sleeping peacefully with Carla.

DANGEROUS CROSSROADS -- Dr.
Ross (George Clooney) and Dr. Del Amico's (Maria
Bello) disagreement over a pediatric asthma
patient (guest star Ulysses Cuadra) is
overshadowed by a school bus accident which
floods the ER with severely injured children.
Dr. Greene's (Anthony Edwards) mental state
begins to affect his relationship with his
daughter, and he receives some unwelcome
spiritual advice from a 19-year-old patient
(guest star David Denman). A crack addict (guest
star Tracy Vilar) accuses Nurse Hathaway (Julianna
Margulies) of injuring her newborn. Still on a
cost-cutting rampage, Dr. Weaver (Laura Innes)
tells Ross to find a research grant or look into
private practice, then questions Jeanie's
(Gloria Reuben) actions to save a patient. While
Dr. Benton (Eriq La Salle) and Carla (Lisa
Nicole Carson) adjust to their new baby, the
strained relationship between Benton and Dr.
Carter (Noah Wyle) erupts into an ugly
confrontation. Noah Wyle and Alex Kingston also
star.
