Mark
and Doug discuss Mark's relationship with
Chuny. Mark has ran out of things to say
and is ready to break up with her. He
wants to know how many people know about the
whole thing. Doug tells him what do say,
but Chuny ends up using the same line on him
and breaks up first. The "pink
flu" went well and management is going to
work on the nurse's working conditions.
Then a newspaper article comes out about how a
nurse killed a patient due to being
understaffed when he was brought in.
Carol goes to the snowy grave site of the
homeless man she accidentally killed.
She brings flowers and is feeling really
guilty about what had happened. Carol
comes in to work and tells the nurses that it
was her that killed the patient. She
goes upstairs to see Mary Cain about the
article. She tells Carol that it was not
her that talked to the reporter. The
nurses are mad at Carol and management now.
It is a prospective intern day and six of the
brightest med student applicants tour the ER.
Anspaugh wants Mark and Kerry to show them
around. Mark is to take three and Kerry
will take three. Kerry is well prepared
with handouts and everything; Mark isn't.
Mark decides to let his follow him through the
trauma rooms. Mark's group gets to help
out in the trauma rooms. Carter
and Benton are preparing for a presentation
for later. It is scheduled for 3:00.
Peter does not seem too interested in it as
Carter is. Jeanie takes care of a young
man, Mike Patterson, who is brought in by his
new wife Cindy. He has been having bad
headaches and has been walking in his sleep
and talking out of his head. Benny
Miles, a six year old, is brought in by his
mother after he hurts his arm. She tells
Doug that he thinks he is Superman. His
mother tells Doug that he has been like this
ever since he saw his father die five months
earlier. The mother works upstairs in
the hospital, so Doug watches the kid while
they wait for a psych consult. Benny
ends up missing. Jeanie has Greg Fischer
take a look at her patient per Mark's request.
He has neurosyphillis. Jeanie wants to tell
the wife about it, but Greg tells her that it
is a private issue. They go in to the
room to ask the wife to leave as they tell him
the news, but she wants to stay. It ends
up that Mike has been faithful and Cindy is
the only person he has ever been with.
It is Cindy who has cheated on Mike.
Mark takes care of a third grade teacher named
Heather Morgan. She has hurt her thumb
while playing on a singles water polo team.
She and Mark flirt with each other. She
wants him to meet her at Finch's Bar after
work, but it is against hospital policy.
She asks for another doctor so that Mark will
not be hers and can meet her. Benton is
in surgery with Morgenstern. Carter
talks with Dr. Hicks about Peter not signing
up for many surgeries lately. Dr. Hicks
tells Carter that he can assist her on a
portacaval shunt. She wants him to sign
Peter up for a splenectomy later during the
day. Carol and Maggie Doyle take care of
a Sgt. Mattimore. He is a fifty five
year old cop who got shot by a young kid.
His partner shot the kid. Maggie tells
Carol that Sgt. Mattimore had helped her
cousin when he was a juvenile. Her
cousin is now a locksmith. Carol notices
that Sgt. Mattimore has a twitching hand, but
he denies it. Peter sees where Carter
signed him up for a surgery and he gets mad at
him. Doug finds Benny in the
waiting area fighting with a grown man.
Doug pulls him away and gets on to him about
how dangerous it is. He didn't like
seeing the man being mean to his girlfriend.
He has his Superman costume out and Doug tells
him that he is not Superman. Carol
checks on Sgt. Mattimore and tells him that he
needs a CAT scan to see what is casing the
twitching. He tells her that he will
think about it. Hicks invites
Carter to switch internships from Peter's blue
team to her red team. Carter thinks this
is a good idea, especially after the way Peter
has been treating him. Greg tells Jeanie
that he is sorry about what had happened at
Doc Magoo's the morning after they looked at
the comets. Jeanie tells him that he
doesn't owe her any explanation. Doug
tells Benny that he is sorry for yelling at
him about not being Superman. He tells
him to always do what is right and don't
listen to people when they tell him not to
help someone as he did. He tells him
that his father would be very proud of him and
he gives him a hug. Benton see Carla in
the OB department of the hospital. She
has an appointment with Dr. Coburn. She
tells him later that she is pregnant.
This is all going on while Carter is given his
and Peter's presentation. Peter doesn't
make it and Carter looks foolish. This
makes him very mad at Peter. Carter
tells him about Dr. Hicks asking him to be on
her team. Peter doesn't seem to mind,
even after Carter tells him that he taught him
everything he knows about surgery. Dr.
Anspaugh comes to tell Kerry and Mark about
how the tour went with the applicants.
Kerry tells him that she was disappointed with
her group and he tells her that he knows.
None of them even applied, but all of Mark's
team did. They loved what all Mark
showed them in the ER. He thinks Mark
deserves the tenure spot. Mark meets
Heather Morgan at a bar when he gets off of
work. Carol goes to the Sun-Times with
her story about the death of the homeless man.
They call Mary to confirm it and she has Carol
go to Roger Drummond's office about it.
Carol comes back downstairs and gets some
things together and gives Haleh some
instructions. Haleh tells her that it is
not her job and Carol replies, "It is
now, I have been suspended" and she walks
out.
