Carter's neighbor Betty comes by to make sure he is up in time for work.  She has brought him something to eat for breakfast to thank him for helping her.  She still has other medical questions to ask, but he tells her that is not his specialty and that there is a family practitioner who lives in the same apartment building.  Kerry introduces a new resident who came from Southside, Margaret (Maggie) Doyle.  Carol comes in complaining about some idiot in a BMW parking in her spot.  It belongs to Maggie and she tells her that she will move it.  Mark asks Carol about having her car repossessed and not needing the spot, but she tells him that it is the principle of it.  Susan is excited because when her shift is over she will be leaving for Maui, Hawaii.  She asks Mark if he would like to go with her, but he tells her that he will need to think about it.  Carol has a patient who use to be her old chemistry teacher, Mr. Sidowsky.  He is so proud that she made a doctor, but she tells him that she is only a nurse.  She later learns that Maggie went to the same catholic school and had the same teacher.  Maggie also tells Carol that she went to nursing school, but got kicked out because she didn't like taking orders.  Peter tells Anspaugh that he would like to wait before deciding to take the cardio thoracic fellowship, because he hears that Dr. Abby Keaton might be offering a pediatric surgical elective.  Dr. Anspaugh gives him until 6:00 pm that day to let him know or her will lose them both.  Benton tries to find Dr. Keaton, but he continues to miss her.  He later sees her in the OR speaking to a young patient, but they will not let him in.  Mark has an eighty nine year old man, Mr. Johnson who takes up his entire shift.  The man has a lot of medical problems, but Mark can not find anybody to ask if he has a DNR order.  Mark ends up putting him on a ventilator.  Afterwards, Mr. Johnson's son shows up and wants Mark to make sure is father does not die.  Mark learns that there is a D.N.R., so now he just waits for the man to die.  Carter and Dennis Gant are the only two surgical interns that are not in the OR today and they are very upset about it.  Carter finds a woman with a lymphoma (fat tumor) and he asks Benton if he can scrub in with him.  Benton tells him only if he can get an OR booked.  The ORs are all booked, so Carter lies by telling her that they need it for a pheochromocytoma.  Benton is unaware of this until Anspaugh comes in to watch such a rare procedure.  Carter gets written up and kicked out by Dr. Anspaugh.  Benton gets on to Gant for haven scrubbed in with someone else without his permission.  Gant tells Carter that he doesn't know how much more he can take.  Peter is still being rude with Jeanie because of her HIV status.  Peter says, "I do want you to stay away from my patients. And I don't want to be with you in a trauma room."  Jeanie ends up walking out of a trauma when asked to do something on a bloody patient and Kerry Weaver takes notice.  Kerry walks outside to find Jeanie waiting for the rain to quit.  Kerry asks Jeanie about AL and how hard it must be do be going through something like that alone.  Jeanie now knows that Kerry knows, but Kerry is very compassionate about it.  Jerry is interested in a kangaroo that is on the loose, but nobody can seem to capture it.  Jerry calls the embassy in Australia to see what would be the best way to lure a kangaroo.  Mr. Johnson regains consciousness and Mark gets to ask him about his DNR.  He ends up going up to ICU and dies on the elevator.  Betty, Carter's neighbor, shows back up in the ER with smoke inhalation.  She tells Carter that she has caused a fire and burned the whole building down.  Mark decides to go to Maui with Susan, but Susan feels like she overstepped her boundary as a friend and she takes back the offer.  Bento finally gets to talk with Abby Keaton.

NBC Review

NEW STAFF ARRIVES - With the merging of now-defunct Southside and County General, the ER gains a new intern, Maggie Doyle (Jorjan Fox) and must contend with their new Chief of Staff, Anspaugh. The patient load also increases. Weaver learns about Jeanie's HIV status; Benton transfers out of Anspaugh's cardiothoracic elective to work with a pediatric surgeon, Dr. Abby Keaton (Glenne Headly). Carter's neighbor (Eileen Brennan), ignores Carter's advice and smokes while using her oxygen tank -- consequently blowing up their apartment building.

TV Guide Review

October 10, 1996: Don't Ask, Don't Tell: Anspaugh (John Aylward) makes life hellish for everyone by implementing patient quotas for each doctor; Benton and Jeanie square off concerning her HIV status and whether she should continue to work; Greene is befuddled by Lewis's invitation to go on a joint vacation.
