Mark is called in to work after having worked all day.  The hospital is very busy because of the rain.  Doug has whiplash and can't work, so it is just Mark, Carter and the nurses.  Peter is in surgery.  Mark is in a crappy mood.  Chloe comes in looking for Susan, but Susan is off with her lawyer discussing Little Suzie and the custody.  Chloe tells Mark that she has changed and she is more responsible now...she is engaged.  Mark and Peter are not getting along well at all in this episode.  Mark goes to Doc's to get a sandwich when he witnesses a car crash.  He tries t rescue the mother and daughter, but he can't.  Eventually Shep and more paramedics get them out.  This makes Mark angry also because he wanted to get them out.  Loretta shows up in the ER with her son Jimmy.  He only has a stomach virus.  Mark and the gang end up taking care of everyone through non-standard methods.  Everyone starts coming back in to work after all of the busy night.  Susan fires her lawyer after he tells her there is little chance of her getting custody of the baby.  The episode ends with Carter and Mark outside of the ER discussing what they are going to do all day.   Carter enjoyed the busy night helping the people,  Mark replies, "That's what it's supposed to be about".

NBC Review

IS THERE A DOCTOR IN THE HOUSE? - An especially busy night goes from bad to worse when Weaver, Lewis and Ross are all unavailable. Greene, who has been working overtime for four days in a row, works on pure adrenaline to keep up and Morgenstern (William H. Macy) refuses to cut him any slack.

TV Guide Review

April 4, 1996: A Shift in the Night: On Greene's fourth straight night on graveyard shift, he leads a skeleton crew through what becomes "the O'Hare of emergency rooms," overflowing with patients, including a battered woman (Patricia Gaul) who almost killed her husband.
