Episode 086 "A Bloody Mess" - Morgenstern returns but he is different, more interested in the patients. He is unable to perform a pericardiocentesis (removal of fluid or blood from the pericardium, the sac around the heart, with a needle) and is later found practicing in the mortuary.

Morgenstern operates laproscopically with Benton on his old teacher the pathologist Dr Swanson who has an oesophageal volvulus. Things go wrong and Swanson starts bleeding, Morgenstern panics. Benton pushes Morgenstern out the way and takes over but Swanson dies, Benton is suspended until an investigation can occur.

It was initially thought that there was no videotape of the operation, until Morgenstern reveals that he has it, he watches the video with Kerry and discovers that he cut an artery causing Swanson to bleed to death. Morgenstern resigns after reinstating Benton.
